I've been keeping my eyes open for a copy of the Shawangunk records, too, and haven't found one yet. If there are any around, I'd sure love to hear about it. I've got an ancestor on almost every page! Richard, have you ever heard anything as to whether the UCGS might ever reprint? Lisa Stitt
To Sue who asked about VANKEUREN and ROOSA: I don't have anything about the third name, but I'm a VanKeuren (and Roosa) descendent, in fact we have our own mailing list. If you want, feel free to subscribe to VANKEUREN-L@rootsweb.com by sending the note subscribe to VANKEUREN-L-request@rootsweb.com. Jacobus VK (b. 16 May 1719 Kingston, d. 18 Jun 1803, Shawangunk) was first married to Leah Hoogteeling in 1741 according to the DRC Kingston records. They had 9 children. (I'm descended from their son Hazael). I'm not positive of the identity of Leah Roosa's parents, but am sure she's tied into the Roosas of Hurley, NY. The first wife, Leah Hooghteeling's mother was Jannetje Roosa, daughter of Heyman Aldertse Roosa and Anna Margriet Roosevelt. Leah appears to be a family name. Jannetje had a sister by that name, and I'm sure one of her brothers would have a daughter by that name as well. My guess is that you're probably looking for one of the following as Leah Roosa's father: Aldert (b. cir. 1679) Claas (or Claes) (b. cir. 1684) Gysbert (b. cir. 1686) I haven't really dug into this group of Roosas since it was so far from my direct line. I would encourage you to try the VanKeuren list. A lot of the listers have additional info on file that might help you out! Good luck! Lisa Stitt

Hello, I would like to find the decendants of the Gaspar Viviano Family. He had 4 children that I know of. One was Emmanuel, born Oct. 19, 1907, died April 1980. His last know address was Woodstock, Ulster Co. The other children were Catherine, an artist who owned a gallery in New York and Philip and Virginia. I have not been able to get death certificates in New York because I am not a direct decendant. I am in the line of Calegero or Charles, the brother of Gaspar. I would like to pay a resonable fee for city directory or obituary lookups. Thank you, Judy
There is a copy of what looks to be the original type-script by Louise Hasbrouck Zimm in the Buffalo-Erie County Public Library in special collections. I'd be curious to see if there are other copies out there. I have xeroxed pages with my ancestors on them, but I did not have the money (or time) to copy the whole book. The book was written in 1941, so I do not know if the author is still around. How the typescript ended up in western NY is a mystery. Has anyone other than me seen a copy of this typescript? Don't know that Quaker Records are on the net (ugh!). But ParsonsTech offers the set of Hinshaw books on CDROM for about $60.00. Also I have found said books on microfilm at the local Law Library in Annapolis, MD. You may be able to find them in some reasonably major local library. Frank Sloat
Looking for Emmanuel Viviano who died April 1980. Would like to talk to decendents. Thank you, Judy

Ed wrote about: "...Bessie Ward b.1896 and Celia Ward b. 1898..." Barbara wrote about: "...grandmother...Hendricks...an Iowa Orphan Train Rider... born in Marbletown, NY, in approximately 1893." A resource for finding the exact date of birth is the microfiche series entitled "Copies of selected indexes to birth, marriage, anddeath certificates, 1881-1948" of the New York Dept. of Health, Vital Record Section, numbered B1367. This is arranged by event (b,d,or m), then by year, and then by alphabetically by last name. I am using the description of these 4,612 microfiches in the Excelsior catalog at http://nysl.nysed.gov . That description also states that the birth fiche go only to 1919 and do not include Albany, Buffalo, and Yonkers prior to 1914 or marriages in those cities prior to 1907. Birth indexes do not include original data for adopted infants but the entries that are there provide date and place of event and certificate number. Two sets of the fiche are "available" to the State Archives for research use; I don't know if this means that they can be loaned out via interlibrary loan. The master copy of the index is on the 13th floor Vital Records office in the Cultural Education Center on the state campus in Albany. I used it there a while ago and found a few of my Ulster county ancestors. There are some infants listed only by gender and surname, as that was a practice back then when parents did not have a first name selected at birth. Also, until about 1900 a lot of births, particularly those at home, were not registered. For home births, names, even surnames, were incorrectly provided, often by a doctor, not the parents, weeks after the event. Thus my Mary Bailey is listed as Mary Buehle, mother of Edwin, whose actual name was Edward, for his 1891 birth. Good luck. BTW, Ed, are you related to Carol and Terry Berinato, siblings who lived in Rhinebeck in the 1950s and '60s ? Sharon Carberry Rhinebeck H.S. '68
Off the cuff, I have found that an "industrial school" in that time period could be a residential facility for orphaned and abandoned children, in which skills for a trade were taught. Perhaps donations were more forthcoming if the place had such a link to industriousness in its name, rather than "orpha- nage." The other possibility is, as the term vocational school is used now, it was a non-residential school for the learning of trades useful in modern industry. In any case, the city directories of the time should have a listing of all such eleemosynary organizations, which perhaps the Kingston area library would consult for you. Hi Listers: Thanks to those of you who responded so quickly to my inquiry. I'm very new to this and appreciate all the help anyone can give me. I am researching my grandmother's family (Hendricks) and have very little info to go on. She was an Iowa Orphan Train Rider, and rarely if ever, spoke of her childhood. I was able to find out that she was born in Marbletown, NY, in approximately 1893. She was sent to the Children's Aid Society in 1904 from the "KINGSTON INDUSTRIAL SCHOOL", where she had been for about one year. I'm thinking that Sharon of Connecticut, who responded to my inquiry, is probably correct in that it must have been a residential school for orphans. I am assuming that it no longer exists. I will contact the Kingston Library to see if they have any information on it. Barbara
