The Delaware County Web Page has a couple of links to newspaper listings from the New York State newspapers project. http://www.rootsweb.com/~nydelawa in case some of you don't have the site. These are all ones on microfilm. I do not know of any listing for ones not on film. I did a quick perusal and nothing for Shandaken. Shandaken is quite small, so you might need to consider newspapers around the area. Pine Hill has something but it didn't start til the 1880s. Consider some areas in Delaware County such as Margaretville (Town of Middletown) for newspapers. I wish to apologize to the entire mailing list for posting the above subject. Two of the three turned out to be hoaxes, which will teach me not to be so trusting of friends who vow they are for real. The third one has passed by now. My thanks to Margaret McDaniel for setting me straight. Again, I'm sorry for goofing up.
Teresa, thanks for the info!!! Barbara Jones Pulley

Ulster Listers I have copies of two Will Probate documents that have turned out to be of peoples apparantly not related. Wouls be glad to pass them on to anyone who might be descended from these individuals. Both deaths and Probates took place in Orange County, New York. #1 William Staples, died in 1911in Newburgh. Had brothers named Lewis, Peter and Stewart. #2 William Staples, died in 1852 in Deer Park. Had children or other relatives named Mary Jane, wife of Amos Baker, Sarah C, Phebe, wife of Moses Baker, Thomas, John C,, Elsy Ann, James W and Josaphine Baker. I believe this Staples family came from New Jersey Bill Staples

Thanks so much for the Ulster County trivia!! Several of the names mentioned are my direct surname lines( Hornbeck, Bos, Sleght, DuBois, Bruyn, and Hoffman) and I appreciate the added information on them. My father was born in Greenfield in 1904, and raised there and in Ellenville, he is a Jones and his mother was a Sheley. Thanks again! Among the very first settlers were mainly Dutch or Flemish. The motive for their coming to the Esopus was undoubtedly the desire to live as free men and women instead of as feudal tenants of the Patroon Van Rensselaer. Under the leadership of Thomas Chambers they came down the Hudson from the Albany neighborhood in 1654, or thereabouts, a hardy band of men, women and children, and according to local tradition, made their way on foot up the Esopus Creek from the present Saugerties, until they reached the lowlands bordering the creek, in or near the present city of Kingston. Many English came with the conquest in the Duke of York's forces, others arrived shortly after, and there was probably a steady immigration from that country up to the time of the Revolution. The Germans from the Palatinate were the largest band of colonists to arrive at one time, settling in the northern part of the present town of Saugerties. In 1809 a glass factory was established in the hardwood forest on the slopes of Overlook Mountain, Woodstock Township and a road was cut all the way from a shipping dock on the Hudson for some fifteen or twenty miles to the remote section where it was operated.
My husband's greatgrandmother was Anna Elizabeth Slater who was supposedly born in Fulton, Schoharie County. However, her family lived in Rochester, Ulster County... not too far from Marbletown! She was born in the early 1840's - I would be interested in exchanging info on the Slaters (we don't have much...). Lynn, wlj1@compuserve.com Researching: Parslow, Slater/Sluyter, Kyser, Klyn
Hello List: I just subscribed and am looking for a family of Walker. Frances Walker born May 15, 1859 married James Steele Dec 2, 1883 Either her father or brother was named Frederick Not much to go on but any information would be appreciated. Paula
Hi Listers: Is there anyone out there researching Slaters. I have recently found this to be my ggrandmother's maiden name. Not much other info yet. I know she lived in the Marbletown area circa 1895-1905. Any info would be appreciated. Barbara
Visiting Goodwill Presbyterian cemetery in Montgomery recently, I found the tombstone of my ancestor John Harris (1747-1825). I was surprised to see a newish looking stone, inscribed, "John Harris, Revolutionary War, 2nd Reg. Ulster Co. Mil. 1747-1825". Earlier transcriptions of the cemetery stones read differently. I asked in the church who had replaced the stone and they did not know. I'm told the local DAR, SAR, American Legion chapters may have been responsible. A Sullivan Co. genealogist told me that a white granite stone indicates the work of the DAR or SAR, gray granite is the Veterans Administration. Anybody run into this situation? Do any listers have local contact numbers? I'd appreciate any leads. Thanks, Elizabeth Harris Pope, Tampa, Fl. ElizPope1@aol.com
Seeking parents/siblings of Squire HARRIS (b. 28 April 1762, Salem, Conn., d. 4 July 1825, Newark, NJ) Married Mary DAVIS of Walkill? or Montgomery? 13 Jan. 1784. Stationed at Fort Montgomery, NY during Rev. War. Is he related to John HARRIS of Montgomery, d. 8 March 1825, aged 77, member of NY Ulster militia, 2nd Regiment? Notation by venerable genealogist Elizabeth Horton in Goodwill Presbyterian church records implies a relationship. Elizabeth Harris Pope, ElizPope1@aol.com
