    3. My thanks to all of you who took the time and effort to give me a location - nine answers came in - and now I know where I was! I appreciate all the help. It seems that Ulster County folks are some of the nicest anywhere. Thanks again. Terri

    1. a note to those who are waiting for Ulster look-ups
    2. Good morning--this is to the several people who sent me requests for lookups in the Roberts & Mather "New York in the Revolution. . . " book. Working for a living has really gotten in the way of my genealogy fun but I hope to have some free time later this week. So don't despair--I'll get the information to you "shortly", as they say here in Texas! Regards, Marilyn Hough Stern, Austin, TX (formerly of Kripplebush, NY)

    3. You mentioned Poucher below. Is he your ancestor? According to my grandfather's paper, he may be son of Dr. Wilson Poucher of Poughkeepsie, NY. In reality, he is Bouché. It is not known when the letter from "B" was changed to "P". In his letter to a Boucher genealogist (no relation) in 1903, Dr. Poucher said he was grandson of Antoine, who was an ancestor of Jacob Bouché, son of Pierre (brother of Jacques), son of Simon Bouché of Claverack, NY. Simon emigrated to New Amsterdam from France through Holland in 1658. Antoine's great-grandson, S. E. Boucher, who lived in Bismarck, North Dakota, wrote to the same Boucher genealogist (no relation) in the same year, 1903, that he had a cousin named N. F. Boucher. 3. Ulster Listers, On a recent trip to Ulster County we made a quick stop at the cemetery on Lattintown Road by the Baptist Church. Most of the stones are no longer legible, fortunately they were legible when Poucher and Terwilliger did their thing in 1929. I have many ancestors buried there. One of the only stones in the cemetery still legible is one right by the entrance which contains the inscriptions of my gr gr grandfathers two sisters, one of whom left her residual estate to the church. Anyway, what I am wondering is whether the church is still active. The building seems to be in functional shape and it appears that some maintenance work was recently done. I would be very interested in contacting someone presently involved with the church who might know if there are any records still in existance. Is anyone familiar with this church and who owns/operates/maintains the building and property ? Bill S

    1. re: where was I?
    2. Off the top of my head, I'd say it was US Route 44. Not 100% positive, but I'll give it another check when I get a hold of a decent map. I'm going to double check if 44 crosses the Shawangunk (I believe it is actually the Shawangunk "kill" and not Shawangunk River, but I'll double check on that also.) Patti R. ICQ# 45512200

    1. Quaker family Ayers
    2. Searching for information on Abigail Ayers/Ayres/Airs, b. 1783, daughter of Thomas Airs and Abigail Adams. The family lived in New Paltz and attended the Marlborough meeting. There are numerous entries for other children of Thomas and Abigail, but none for Abigail Ayers. There is an entry about Abigail Burgess being removed for marrying out, and I believe this is Abigail Ayers who married David Burgess about 1807. Her brother may have been Abel A. Airs who married Sarah Wood. Thanks, Stephanie

    3. My memory is failing, but fifty years have gone by since we made visits to my great-aunt and uncle, Richard and Hattie Freer Hoffman. We came through New Paltz, crossed the Walkill River, across the plain; the road made a sweeping left turn; we drove through fields on either side of the road with glacial deposits, skirted a town, possibly Gardiner. Then we crossed the Shawangunk River on a steel riveted bridge, the road curved to the right. There was a store, perhaps named Monikee's? - and I recall passing a flour mill. Her house was the first one on that road after we crossed the bridge, there was a barn and a circular driveway, and the property backed up to the Shawangunk River. Across the road was an orchard of Northern Spy apples. I have a NYS roadmap, but can't identify the road due to the growth of the area. Can anyone from that area tell me the name of the road? My parents always referred going there as "we're going to Gardiner to see Aunt Hattie". I would appr! eciate any help you can give. Terri Freer Wilson

    1. Re: DOLSON/COURTER
    2. Myra - I have an Abraham Dolson m 1734 in Kingston NY to a Sloat. They had five children, one son 4 daughters. This is further back than yours - but may help in finding a connection. The son was Jonas b 1737. Eager's History of Orange Co. lists Abraham, Jr; Abraham, Sr; Isaac, Matthew as signers of the Revolutionary Pledge in Goshen on June 8, 1775. Don't know how these connect. Maybe there were additional chn to the above parents? ? ? (Abraham Jr?) Happy hunting! Frank Sloat

    1. DOLSON/COURTER
    2. Hello Everyone: I'm new to this list and looking for Jane DOLSON who was born 10/12/1816 in Warwick. She is possibly the daughter of William DOLSON, born 10/28/1794 in Marlboro and died 1848, and married to Lydia POLHEMUS about 1818 in Marlboro. In 1838 Jane DOLSON married Alexander Alexis Ferdinand COURTER (1821-1899). Any information on either family would be greatly appreciated. Kind regards, Myra Vreeland Lane

    3. Hello Jay, Welcome to New York Research! You'll laugh, you'll cry, you'll swear at the State Records people. Your plan, excerpted below, sounds good. One caveat, however: Be aware of, and make your correspondents aware of the other surnames involved. Many times just down the road, or next door, will be the family one ancestor marries into. Or the matriarch will move in with a son-in-law. I've just discovered a missing "son" who had already married before the census was taken; and found proof of the parents of a gggrandfather which proof was missing in earlier censuses. So, be sure to look around, and let us and others know who else besides Kortright might be on those films or books. Happy hunting. Or as Chingatchgook would say, "Hugh!" 3. Hello, To officially start off my genealogy Research for my NY ancestors. I am going to start off with my ancestors that left the Empire State and headed to Virginia. There were four such families involved in that exodus. I will pick one and work on him with your help untill exhausted before moving on down the line. I hope this combination effort will help many that have families that tied in with mine or might have traveled west when mine did. I would like to start with my Dutch ancestor Hendrick "Henry" Kortright (Cortright/Cutright/etc.) Born Aug 1717in Rochester twp, (then Raysester), Ulster Co., New Netherlands. I do have a note that his parents (Petrus "Pieter" Kortright and Marytjen "Mary" Van Garden) were living in Rochester in 1717. He was Baptised in 22 Sep 1717 with Witnesses: Louwerens Kortregt and Zara ten Eyk (His Uncle and Aunt). He married on 28 DEC 1739, in Rochester twp to Elizabeth "Liddie" Hornbeck. Then in 1753 became a "Ensign of Foot" for the community. About 1760 Henry and Liddie made the Journey to Virginia. They had several children there. Here are a few notes: > I believe Hendrick Kortright was a late comer to the South Branch > arriving around 1760/61. This date comes from sworn statements made by his > son John at a later date ie: pension application for military service. If anyone has more information to add, please post it. Jay Steffens

    3. Hi List, I am new to this list and would like to post the family I am working on. My G-G-Grandfather was Issac WHISPELL born in NY in 1835. I have found several Issac and several other WHISPELL's listed as head of house hold in Ulster Co. census records on the internet, but they do not give the names of the children. I know Issac's wifes name was Cathrine and they had at least four children , July A.(Daughter) b. 1864 , Edward b. 1866, Levi b. 1872 ( my greatgrandfather) and Charles b. 1879 in PA. The other children were all born in NY. If anyone has any information on these people, I would be very interested. Thank you in advance. Pamela
