Looking for information pertaining to a Daniel D. Seymour, probably born in early 1800's. Found in 1860 Ulster Co. census with wife Elizabeth and son Charles, age 23 (I think Charles was born in Modena). Any assistance will be greatly appreciated! Regards, Barbara Jones Pulley Southeastern NC
These are notes that I collected from everyone that has responded about Elizabeth "Liddie" Hornbeck. Take a look and make any comments. We can discuss this and see what else we can come up with on this early Dutch Pioneer lady. (This would be The South Branch of the Potomac Valley) - --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- >From Carol Scior Information which I have show that Hendrick Cutrack (Cortregt) married Elizabeth Hornbeck at Kingston, NY on 28 Dec 1739. Their children are listed as Charity Cutright who married Samuel Pringle, Benjamin Cutright who married Catherine Wolfe and John Cutright who married Rebecca Truby. >From this information it would seem that this Hendrick is not the father of my John Cutright who married Elizabeth Subre. In answer to your question about Elizabeth Subre's parents, I have nothing on her at all. - -------------------------------------------------------------------- From: Shirley Hornbeck <hornbeck@s-hornbeck.com> I would like to point out that a second son named Benjamin born to Johannes Hornbeck and Orseltjen Westbroek is only a probability and is not proven. A Benjamin was baptized 19 May 1717 and he may have died young as they named a second son Benjamin and he was baptised on Jun 28, 1724. This is probably the Benjamin who married Janneke Kortright. I am looking for the address of the Shawangunk Dutch Reformed Church. Can anyone help? Thanks
Glenys: Are you sure that you've got that location in Orange Co. correct? There is a Craigville, a crossroads halfway between Washingtonville and Chester, but there is a church there. Lisa

-- [ From: Richard Frisbie * EMC.Ver #2.5.02 ] -- .the intent is to prevent further dissemination of a non-fact, much like virus hoaxes. -------- REPLY, End of original message -------- Dear listmembers The subject of my original post was "Genealogy research and (the fine line of) the law" - changing it to "It's the law" is misleading and inappropriate . So far this is not a further dissemination of non-fact - it was posted because I had never heard of it and wondered if anyone had. I had a chance to look at my notes from the meeting - the acting State Historian Dr. Joseph Meany said, "It is a matter of local law that municipal historians are forbidden to do genealogical research for any individual." Why I would have to interupt a very good speech to ask the top historian in the state for verification is beyond me - as is why reporting it to this list can be called "dissemination of non-fact." The historian's guidelines posted here earlier point to such research being discouraged. By law - or not - I don't know. (Incidently - neither the president nor the vice president of the Ulster county genealogical society - who were both present in the audience - interrupted to ask about that law either.) More significantly - I thought - was the remark his statement did generate. That was about the southern state building a new archives and opening it longer hours because of genealogy groups documenting the large amounts of money spent by researchers. That was from the head of the local government studies department in our community college. (He didn't ask if it really was a law either. His point - I believe - was that genealogical research was a "good" thing on many levels and shouldn't be illegal for historians - rather documented to improve the financial worth of municipal historian's positions, maybe even increase their budgets.) But - I didn't interrupt him to ask what he meant either. Everyone seemed to accept it - I certainly did. I just took notes and enjoyed the meeting. As I already asked - please don't shoot the messenger. Richard
Richard, Would it be possible to share this mailer with us? I was just going to ask someone on the list for info on the town historian of Shandakin, but this list might answer that and more. Is it in E-form so you could just put it on the list? If in print, will be glad to send sase and copying charges, eh? Regarding recent postings about the legality of historians doing genealogical research: The next time a historian or genealogist (or anyone else who should be "in the know") makes a statement and says "it's the law", ask the speaker for the chapter and verse of the law to which they are referring so that you can check it out yourself. If the speaker cannot do this, ask him or her for the basis on which they made the statement. All too often, statements of "it's the law" is based on heresay and is an irresponsible way to give a position credibility. This is in no way meant to cause a speaker embarrassment....the intent is to prevent further dissemination of a non-fact, much like virus hoaxes. Sincerely, Ginny Byron vbyron@ulster.net
