My ancestor, Hugh, was born in (then) Rockbridge County Virginia about 1761. He did have a brother John who may have been older and I don't know where he was born. John ended up in S. Carolina as an officer in the SC Militia. Hugh and John's father was James Simpson and I am still trying to determine if he was from NY and was the same James who settled for a time on the S Branch of the Potomac River about 1740 with a group of German, Dutch and others from NY. Do you have any info on a James in NY? Bob Simpson

Do not remember if I found more than one Jann. Have not looked at this line in a while. The only point that sticks -he was (as most, if not all the men were) in the militia. After the English took over from the Dutch, he (Jan Willinszen) was listed as John Williamson on the records, which also listed an "englishman" of same name. To avoid confusion he was taged "De Duyster".
I am trying to find out if the folks I found in the 1840 census are the same I found in the 1850 census. The 1840 location was Rochester, and the 1850 was Shawangunk.
