Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/5RB.2ACE/1336.1.1.1 Message Board Post: Hey Edie! According to "history of Ulster Co" by Sylvester it says "the territory of the town [of Esopus] comprises portions of the three ancient patents, the Kingston patent, the Hurley and the New Paltz. About two-thirds of the northern and central portions are from the Kingston patent, the southern portion from the New Paltz, and a narrow strip next to the Walkill from the Hurley patent. ........ 'all that part of the north portion of the town of New paltz lying and being north of a line commencing on the Hudson River at the southeast corner of the farm now owned and occupied by William Waring, and running thence north fifty-eight degrees and forty-five minues west to the Walkill River, then up along said river as it runs to the present line of the town of Esopus, is hereby set off and annexed to, and shall hereafter form a part of the town of Esopus.' - Laws of 1842, Chap. 315; also Revised Statues, vol.i. page 218" Don't you just love the specifics of that? It's from page 109 Volumne two of Sylvester's Book. The book was published in 1880 so maybe you can find William Waring in the 1880 census and figure out what you need to look for in your search. Good luck, Sharon

Thanks...that is a nicely done site. What I'm trying to do is find a way to verify that my David is Jordan's son. Problem is, I have no documents (other than my g-grandfather's death certificate) for David. The last census I can find him in is 1830. So I decided to track the land. Jordan is listed as living in New Paltz, but I believe some of New Paltz became Esopus when the town of Esopus was formed. I appreciate your help. Edie

    2. I grew up in Foxboro, MA where they still have fence viewers. Although in times past they served the function of settling boundary disputes, they are still appointed in an honorary capacity today. Today two men who were newly married during the previous year are appointed to the one year positions. They don't do anything now though - just an honorary and ego enhancing position. 2. Marge Clark
    3. Lee Anne, In looking at the documents on line for Orange County at their Genweb site for the years 1811 and 1812, fence viewers are mentioned. It is also mentioned the types of fences - wood and the size they should be and also stone fences. I would agree with Mr. Sloat that it would be a type of surveyor and also possibly a type of inspector who would approve the fences that were used as boundaries and to make sure they were where they should be. From what I get from reading these documents, they had laws governing the types of fences that could be built. Marge Our children are living messages we send to a time and place we will never see.

    3. I've often wondered about the same question. I was thinking that the job responsibilities may also have included an element of "quality control". As a coincidence regarding my assumption, there is a story in this month's edition of New England Ancestors magazine. I offer the following excerpt from page 54: "...If the old court records are any indication, Bacon was known throughout the county for making trouble. His hogs had damaged crops for miles around, but he always denied responsibility, blaming others for failing to keep their fences in repair or claiming that the hogs belonged to someone else. Bacon's name appears repeatedly in land disputes, cases of wandering horses and cattle, slander,and......" This is not the first time that I came across such an account. 2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: Polhamus, Polhemus, Relyea Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/5RB.2ACE/1336 Message Board Post: The town of Esopus was founded in 1811. How can I determine whether a family (in my case, Polhemus) were in the same location & the town changed or if they moved there? Who would have the tax rolls indicating the change from one township to the other? Do maps exist (like the later ones of the area) showing property owners? Jordan Polhemus is listed in 1790, 1800 & 1810 in New Paltz. I have been given 1816 as his date of death. In 1830, David Polhemus appears for the first time (Jordan had a son named David, born in 1782), but David is listed in Esopus. I'm trying to determine if he moved to Esopus or if the creation of the township changed the family's "address". Peck's genealogy of the Polhemus family states that the land sold by David & his brother John during the 1820's (which is said to be in New Paltz in one deed & Esopus in the other, but was, I believe, on the Hudson & the 2 lots adjacent to one another) belonged to their father Jordan. The deeds don't say that, so Peck must have had some other resource. I am descended from David & Elizabeth. Have been unable to verify that he was Jordan's son so I thought I'd try "following the land".

    1. Re: [NYUlster] what is a fence-viewer?
    2. Frank Sloat
    3. Lee Anne I suspect that a Hugenot Fence Viewer is similar to a Fence Inspector (Dutch - Rooy-meester). My immigrant ancestor held that position in New Harlem in the 1650s. This individual was the land surveyor - responsible to make sure that the inhabitant's fences did not encroach on other persons land. Sort of a precursor to a Building Inspector - except his interest was not the quality of construction - just the propriety of the location. Hope this helps Frank Sloat = = = = = = = = = --- Lee Anne Center <[email protected]> wrote: > In the Huguenot Historial Society web site, I see > references to > fence-viewers. 3. In the Huguenot Historial Society web site, I see references to fence-viewers. What is a fence-viewer? See a couple of the references below: 1) "April, 1766. - "For Fence-Viewers for the New Settlement on Hudson’s River, N. Paltz, Peleg Ransom, James Tuttle, Eleazor Cole." 2) "Cornelis' son Jacob VerNooy 2F4 was baptized on September 11, 1709 at the Reformed Dutch Church in Kingston. On May 21, 1728 he married Annatje DuBois (b. 1703), daughter of David DuBois and Cornelia VerNooy, by whom he had seven children: Zara, Jacob, Cornelia, Zanuel, Josaphat, Maria, and Wessel. Jacob is listed as a fence-viewer of the town of Rochester in 1740 , and churchmaster of the Reformed Dutch Church of Wawarsing in 1746. Jacob VerNooy died ca. 1780."
