Does anyone know if there are any tax lists available for the time period between 1760 to the beginning of the Revolutionary War for Ulster and/or Dutchess Counties? And if so, could someone possibly do a look-up for me? I just returned from a trip to New England and Westchester County, NY, where I was able to find numerous records of my ancestors from the 1600s up until the early 1760s, but I have absolutely nothing from then until they arrived in SW Virginia in the early 1770s. It appears that several of my family lines lived in the Ulster County/Dutchess County area prior to leaving for Virginia. The families that I am interested in are the BISHOPs (originally from Connecticut and later Westchester County NY), the COLEs (from Plymouth and Swansea, Massachussetts), and the HOPKINS (from Rhode Island). I believe that my COLE and HOPKINS ancestors moved to Ulster and/or Dutchess Counties before 1765. It is possible that the BISHOPs also lived there for a brief period of time, as I "lost" them in Westchester County after the baptism of my 4th great grandfather in 1764. These three lines reportedly traveled together from New York to SW Virginia. I am trying to figure out just how they "connected" in order to make that trip together. It would help if I could find records of them during this "lost" period of time! Thanks! Best regards, Janet Zengel Messer Micanopy, Florida

Does anyone know anything about the early Baptist movement in Dutchess and Ulster Counties? The families of several of my ancestral lines (e.g., BISHOP, COLE, HOPKINS) apparently gathered in this area from Connecticut, Rhode Island, Massachussetts, and Westchester County NY in the 1760s and early 1770s. They then traveled together with several other families to Virginia in around 1773, where they started a new Baptist Church in St. Clair's (Sinclair) Bottom in Washington County (now Smyth County) Virginia. I am curious about why they sold their land (of which they all owned a considerable amount) and moved to Ulster or Dutchess County, and why they later left that area for what was then the frontier of southwest Virginia. The VAN BOMMEL & FORT Families have Dutchess County & Ulster County Connections! Can anyone help me determine if Christopher VAN BOMMEL who sold property in Poughkeepsie to Johannes FORT in 1759 was related to Johannes FORT's mother-in-law, Elizabeth (VAN BOMMEL) OSTRANDER or Pieter VAN BOMMELL, the possible Grandfather-in-law of Johannes FORT. As near as I can tell Johannes FORT's wife was Rebecca OSTRANDER, d/o Hendrick OSTRANDER and Elizabeth (VAN BOMMEL) OSTRANDER. While the dormers and the porch are recent the interior still contains early wood-trim. The original floor plan consisted of two rooms on either side of the central hall but the two on the north are now thrown into one. A pane in one of the windows of the dining-room is cut: Jane Fort 1778, and another pane bears the inscription: Henry Dawkins, engraver. Johannes FORTS's son Abraham (b. 1750 d. 1822) who was locally prominent in the War of the Revolution, succeeded his father in the house. Ant it was Major Abraham FORT's wife, Jane, daughter of Peter MONFORT of Sprout Creek, who cut her name on the window pane. Hello all, I am looking for ANY information about the Atkins family that was living in Big Indian, Shandaken township, during the 1880's through the 1920's. My husband's grandfather, Andrew N. Atkins, was born there about 1903, and Eugene Jocelyn Atkins (may be related) was born there in 1897. On Eugene's draft card for WWI it stated his father was also born in Big Indian, and his (Eugene's) next of kin was Fred Mackey. Thanks in advance! Patti

Hi, I don't know of any connection so far with this HARRIS family, but I do have voluminous research on John Harris of Montgomery. I suspect this family migrated from Southampton, Suffolk co. Long Island, and is connected to the George Harris family of North Sea, Long Island, an original settler. If you find a link to my folks, let me know and I'll share what I've got. Here's my standard query: Seeking parents, birthplace of John HARRIS (1748-8 March 1825), buried in Goodwill Presbyterian churchyard. A newish tombstone marks his grave and inscription reads "John Harris, Revolutionary War, Ulster Co. 2nd Reg. Mil. 1747-1825." Wife Abigail ? (1749-23 June 1802) is buried next to him. Children: David HARRIS (1775-4 Feb. 1845) m. 1. Margaret BARKLEY (1775-2 Dec. 1839) and 2. Elizabeth CRAWFORD Other children may be John HARRIS Jr., MARTHA, SILAS, possibly PHOEBE. I have good records beginning with David HARRIS and will share. Elizabeth HARRIS Pope Portland, ME.
