Could someone help me with information about them? In the April 1910 census Sidney (55) and Harriet (53) were living in the Town of Esopus and he is recorded as a clergyman. Sidney (64) and Harriet (63) were living in the Town of Marbleton on the Singston? and Ellenville Road where he was a minister of a church in the 1920 census. Thanks!

Woodstock might be more built up, being closer to Kingston, but there aren't any 4 lane highways there, either. You shouldn't confuse Woodstock (village and town) in Ulster Co. with the site of the Woodstock Festival in the Town of Bethel in Sullivan Co., though.

    2. I am also planning a research trip to Ulster County/Albany area. I will be going to the NY State Library but would like to visit local libraries in the smaller towns such as Hurley, Kingston, Saugerties and Red Hook. Also can anyone recommend a contact for a local guide or historian for the Ulster area and the Albany area. And one last request, I am looking for a place to stay, does anyone have any suggestions for Ulster County. At the moment I'm considering the Red House Inn in Saugerties. Thanks so much M Elmendorf

Here is a link to the information contained in that room: http://www.kingstonlibrary.org/job_information_center.htm They also have the Daily Freeman on microfilm which is easily accessible. You might want to include Sullivan and Orange Counties in your trip plans, if you have enough time; Mamakating is now in Sullivan County, and part of Mamakating became the town of Deerpark in Orange County in 1798.

Surnames: Lane Whispell Hines Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/5RB.2ACE/1363.4.2 Message Board Post: Sharon, I have to ask - what can you tell me about Shandaken? My research confirms that I have both Lane and Whispell ancestors who settled there "way back when". Eventually both families migrated to northeastern Pennsylvania (Clinton Twp, Wyoming Co, PA) I've seen that name Shandaken for quite a few years, but I've got no concept of what the area looks like, either back in the late 1700's or today. Is it rural or is it city? When I think of Woodstock, I think of the "hippie" music festival held there years ago and if I remember correctly I believe that was in a farmer's pastures. I'd really love to have some insight into the make up of the area. For example, my ancestor, Gilbert Lane, Sr. was born in White Plains, Westchester Co, NY in 1737 and he died 23 January 1833 at age 95 and was buried in Olive, Ulster Co, NY. In 1790 he lived in Mabletown, Ulster Co where he was a tavern keeper from 1793 to 1795 and by 1799 he was employed as an overseer of highways in Woodstock, Ulster Co, NY. In 1810 and 1820 he lived in Shandaken. It was not until 1832 that Gilbert Lane, Sr. who served in the 2nd Regiment, Dutchess Co, NY with Brinckerhoff's Regiment during the Revolutionary War, applied for a military pension. By then he would have been 94 years old...he died the following year. Gilbert Lane, Sr's son, Gilbert Jr. first married about 1797 in Woodstock, Ulster Co., NY. I do not know the details or reasons, death or divorce perhaps, but Gilbert Jr. married a second time in 1802 again in Woodstock to Dorcas Hines who was born about 1799 in Connecticut. Gilbert Lane Jr. died in 1845 in Falls Twp, Wyoming Co, PA. His wife, Dorcas Hines Lane died after 1850 in Falls Twp, Wyoming Co, PA. Some of Gilbert Jr.'s nine known children were born in Ulster Co, NY with others being born in Tioga Co, NY. My great-great-great grandfather, Gilbert Jr.'s son, David B. Lane, was born in Nichols, Tioga Co, NY 15 Jun 1820. But then running along parallel with the Lane family in Shandaken, Ulster Co, NY is also the Whispell family. I've found references to Conrad Whispell, Jane Whispell, and William Whispell in Shandaken via a listing of Ulster Co, NY will testators index. Some of the NY Whispells migrated to Wyoming County and are buried here including Eliza Whispell, (1841-1890). I'm trying to learn as much as possible about Delia (or Adelia) Whispell, (1862-1930) daughter of Peter Whispell who was born 14 Jan 1836 in Woodstock, Ulster Co, NY and died 7 Dec 1908 in Wyoming Co, PA.. I believe Delia Whispell (Rosengrant possibly a first marriage?) Decker who was married to George Decker (1861-1927) is the mother of my grandmother, Lillian Jane Rosengrant Decker (1883-1957). Delia Whispell, born in NY made her way to Wyoming Co, PA (and I'd love to know the story) where her daughter, Lillian Rosengrant Decker married Clarence David Lane, in 1902 - the grandson of David B. Lane and the great! - grandson of Gilbert Lane, Jr. and wife, Dorcas Hines Lane - who also came to Wyoming County, PA from Ulster Co, NY. I'd like to know more about Shandaken both then and now so I might be in a better position to research both the history as well as current historical societies, etc. I'd even like to know if it's a relatively quiet place today where a good old country girl could possibly drive....or is it bustling four lane highways where a person like me would get killed traveling? My little town only has a couple of red lights - and most of them are new within the past couple of years. Can you fill me in? Sylvia

    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: Lane, Whispell, Rosengrant, Decker Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/5RB.2ACE/1099.3 Message Board Post: Irene, I wanted to share information that I posted on the Rosengrant board to Betty, as I believe we are all looking for information on some of the same families that originated in Ulster County, NY and some of the surrounding counties that eventually migrated to Wyoming County in Pennsylvania. Betty, Thanks for trying to help me figure things out. Since I received your email with the mention of Peter Whispel(l), I've been searching the various census years particularly in Clinton Twp, Wyoming County. My father, born Charles Tripp Lane, son of Clarence David Lane and Lillian Jane Rosengrant Decker Lane was born there on Bunker Hill in Sept 1907. I felt I made some progress, particularly in the 1900 Census of Clinton Twp, Wyoming Co, PA - page 21 (shown as page A56 on the Genealogy.com image) where I found the George Decker family living next door to widower Peter Whispell: Decker, George head w m May 1860 41 Married 15 years owns house, farm laborer born PA, father & mother born PA Decker Adelia, wife, w f Mar 1862 age 38, Married 15 years, has borne 10 children, 9 living as of 1900 She was born NY, mother and father born NY (nee Whispell, I believe) Decker, Rosa W. daughter, 19, born Aug 1880 Decker, Mahalia, 13, daughter, born July 1886 Decker, Nathaniel, 12, son, born May 1888 Decker, Mable, 8, daughter, born Oct 1881 Decker, Norman E., 6, son, born Mar 1883 Decker, Effie H., 2, daughter, born Dec. 1897 Whispell, Peter, head, w, m, 58, born May 1842 widowed born NY, father and mother both born NY Whispell, Suzie, daughter, 17, born June 1883 single, born Penna, father and mother born NY Then from the 1910 Pennsylvania Census, Clinton Twp, Wyoming Co, Roll 1433, Book 1, Pages 12, 14, and 15: Page 12 - Bunker Hill Road area: Lane, Clarence D, (David) head, m w 27 married 8 years owns farm born PA, father and mother born PA (Clarence Lane was born 12 Aug 1883 and is the son of Charles Tripp Lane (1849-1928) and Mary McKinney Dixon Lane, and grandson of David B. Lane (1820-1884) and Mary Ann Walters Lane (1823-1899). his wife, Lane, Lillian J. (my grandmother) 26, married 8 years, has borne 6 children, 5 of whom are living by 1910. Lillian J(Jane) Rosengrant Decker - according to research of a Lane cousin - census states she was born in PA and her mother and father were born in PA. Again in the 1920 census her father and mother are shown as being born in PA. Also listed in the 1910 census are the children of Clarence and Lillian Rosengrant Decker born to that date: Lane, Ronald F., Son, 7- Lane, Josephine, Daughter, 5 - Lane, Mary, Daughter, 4 - Lane Charles Tripp, 3 - my father, who eventually took the middle name of Sherman as his mail and that of his grandfather, also Charles Tripp Lane was constantly being mixed up - and Lane, Ethel G, Daughter, On Page 15 Clinton Twp, 1910: Decker, George 48 Delia C. 47 Nathaniel 20 Norman 16 Effie H. 13 Fred F. 10 (born since the 1900 census) On Page 14, Clinton Twp, 1910: Whispell, Frank 40 Annie 30 wife Lena 7 daughter Now what leaves me confused, if my grandmother, Lillian Rosengrant Decker Lane's mother is in fact Delia (or Adelia) C. Whispell there is a discrepany as Delia is listed as being born in New York state. Grandmother via the census says her mother was born in PA. The best I know right now is that George and Delia C. (Whispell) Decker are buried in the Dixon Cemetery, US Route 6 East from Tunkhannock, Wyoming Co, PA. I've visited the cemetery as a child with my father, and more recently with my children. You know when you are a child you really have little concept of who you are "visiting". But more recently on my visit, I also found that there were Rosengrants buried in the Dixon Cemetery: Mahala Rosengrant Van Allen (1895-1956). Another oddity is that the Lane's came to Wyoming County, PA via Rye, Westchester Co, NY later Connecticut Colony (about 1640) Colony then by 1833 a g, g,g grandfather, Gilbert Lane. Sr. died at age 95 in Olive, Ulster Co., NY By 1762 he had migrated to Dutchess Co, NY and in 1790 he lived in Marbletown, Ulster Co, NY and by 1797 and 1799 he was in Woodstock, Ulster Co, NY. In 1810, Gilbert Lane Sr. was in SHANKAKEN, Ulster Co, NY and his son, David B. Lane was born on 15 June 1820 in Tioga, Tioga County, New York State. It would almost make you wonder if the Whispell's migrated along the same trails. And it would also make a person wonder what caused them to move ever forward into Wyoming County, PA. I hope to learn more about all the families - Lane, Rosengrant, Whispell, Decker...as time goes by. Any help from any direction would be appreciated. It does seem as if the entire lineage is a very tangled web to unravel. Thanks for your help. Sylvia
