    1. [NY-ULSTER] Better search ability for Ellis Island
    2. Pat Connors
    3. From this morning's Eastman's Online Genealogy Newsletter: I have mentioned Dr. Stephen Morse a number of times in past newsletters. He creates indexes to online databases that make searching those databases much easier and more accurate than the indexes on the original web site. He has created improved indexes to databases housed on the Ellis Island, Castle Garden, Ancestry.com, and other web sites. Now he has added a new Ellis Island search form (called the gold form) that is capable of searching through the entire 25 million passengers in the Ellis Island Database for ships' passenger lists. The new gold form can also search on every transcribed field. The gold form has several new features not available previously. The user can now search on traveling companions (a feature which the blue form had but the gray form never did). In addition, researchers are able to specify which fields they would like to see displayed on the results page. They can also specify how they would like to have the results sorted. This is an example of an ever evolving and always improving web site. The gold form and a lot more can be found at http://www.stevemorse.org. -- Pat Connors, Sacramento CA http://www.connorsgenealogy.com

    3. I don't have a James Shafer in my information. I'm sorry. All of my Dederick Shafer's children were born in Orange County, NY and moved with Dederick and his wife Sarah to Chemung County. My line starting with Dederick goes, Dederick & Sarah Shafer, their son was John S. Shafer who married Charity Coe of Veteran, NY, their son John Shafer married Ida Chapman of Veteran, NY, their son Charles Shafer married Frances Beardsley of Horseheads, NY, and their daughter Maude Shafer married Linford Turner of Veteran. Maude and Linford are my grandparents. They passed away in 1978 and 1981. I have tons of information on my Shafer's after they moved to Chemung County. But before that I really only have other people's information to go on. I'm sorry I can't help you. 2. Pat Connors
    3. From Eastman's Online Genealogy Newsletter this morning: Ancestry.com, the world's largest online family history resource, today announced it is extending free access to the most extensive immigration records collection online through the end of the year. On November 9, the company released the most comprehensive collection of all readily available U.S. passenger list records from 1820 to 1960, providing access to more than 100 million names from the height of U.S. immigration. Ancestry.com originally offered free access to its immigration records through November 30 to celebrate the launch of the passenger list collection. Due to overwhelming response, the company is now extending the offer through the end of 2006. -- Pat Connors, Sacramento CA http://www.connorsgenealogy.com
