My 3rd great-grandmother, Mary Ann KELLY, was born somewhere in Tompkins County in 1825, and we are searching for the names of her parents and siblings. She married Uriah DUBOIS in 1847 (he resided in Ulysses). This means she was out of the parental home by the 1850 census where she would have been listed by name. I've been looking at every Kelly family in Tompkins Co. in the 1850 census relative to age, as well as the pre-1850 censuses to see who had daughters of the appropriate age. The issue now becomes how to investigate the targets further. Have looked at will abstracts available on line. Am expanding to surrounding counties as well. My interest in Freeman came about because of his purchasing land in 1856, 1857, and 1858 in Iowa. The records show he was of Tompkins County, NY. My Uriah and Mary Ann also purchased land in 1856 and settled there. It would appear that Freeman remained in NY or returned there. It is possible that he could be Mary Ann's brother or cousin. I had found the Protective Police item you mention on the USGenWeb site last evening. I appreciate your recommendation of the History Center and I will visit their web site. It has been some time since I contacted resources in Tompkins County, and there are likely more available now. Anyway, I really appreciate your taking time to point me in the right direction(s). Thanks, Kay Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
