SCRLC is happy to announce the next session in our "Putting Theory into Practice" workshop series: "Preservation Reformatting" will be presented on Thursday, March 15 by Barbara Eden and Fiona Patrick (Cornell University). This workshop will present the options available for preservation copying of library and archival materials. Discussions will focus on the pros and cons of preservation photocopying, microfilming, and digitization. Participants will learn about selection, preparation, conversion, and quality control requirements. Thanks to partial support by the New York State Library Conservation/Preservation Grant Program, this full-day class (including lunch) is only $30 for SCRLC members and $35 for non-members. There is limited seating for this class, so please register early to avoid disappointment. Full details and registration information appear at the bottom of this message. It includes eight workshops; all taught by Cornell University's conservation and preservation specialists. The series' objective is to help regional libraries and historical agencies add to their knowledge base and skills by offering sessions related to managing collections (monitoring, handling, exhibiting, repairing, salvaging) and environmental concerns (insects, temperature, humidity, mold, rodents, bats). The workshops will train regional libraries in planning processes which will ensure an appropriate environment to prevent common preservation problems, and to offer solutions when, or if, these processes should fail. As libraries implement sound environmental conditions in their libraries, the same conditions will be beneficial for the staff and users of the library. All workshops in this series will emphasize hands-on activities. The registration fee will cover handouts, practice materials, refreshments, and lunch. Approximately once each month, from September 2006 through April 2007, one of the Putting Theory into Practice workshops will be presented in the Ithaca area. Further details about this, and all SCRLC training sessions, are available on the SCRLC calendar at http://www.lakenet.org/scrlc/calendar.html ************************************************************ South Central Regional Library Council Preservation Reformatting March 15, 2007 Please email kjackson@lakenet.org, send or fax this form and payment to: SCRLC, 215 N.
