BREWER DIES AT NINETY-FIVE Cornelius W. BREWER, 95, one of the oldest residents of this city, died late Monday night. He was born in Ithaca, N.Y. and moved to Kalamazoo in 1856. He resided there until 1914, when upon the death of Mrs. Brewer [Phoebe] he came to Grand Rapids. He leaves one daughter, Mrs. Perry [Belle] SCHURTZ of this city; one son, De Witt BREWER of Kalamazoo; three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Funeral services and burial will be in Kalamazoo. THE GRAND RAPIDS PRESS, Grand Rapids, Mich., Tues., 6 July 1920, Pg. 8, Col. 3, Art. 1 According to the 1900 U.S. Census for Alamo Twp., Kalamazoo Co., MI, Cornelius was born Dec. 1825, in NY. His father was born in New Jersey and his mother in New York. His wife, Pheby Ann, was born July 1829, in New Jersey. They were married c. 1853. Pheby had two children, both of whom survived. At this point, Cornelius or C.W., as he was often denoted, was a farmer. In the 1860 U.S. Census for the Village of Kalamazoo, C.W. Brewer was listed as a Telegraph Repairer - In 1870, a RR Conductor - in 1880, a Conductor on RR. According to records I found on the MIGENWEB site for Kalamazoo Co., MI, Cornelius died of a Fractured Hip, 6 July 1920, Grand Rapids, Kent Co., MI. His wife, Phebe Ann, d. 19 April 1914, of Arteriosclerosis, in Cooper Twp., Kalamazoo Co., MI. Both are bured in the West Cooper Cemetery, Cooper Twp., Kalamazoo Co., MI. I have an AMBROTYPE photograph in a case labeled on the front, PETER BREWER 1803-1881. I believe this must be Cornelius' father, but at this point I have been unable to establish that connection. Any information on this family would be greatly appreciated. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
