Here it is for others who may be interested. July 7, 1828 The Watch-Tower, Cooperstown, N.Y. Murder and Robbery Summary of article: Capt. Jonathan Brooks of Washingtonville, Orange County [NY?] was found dead apparently from a beating June 24 near Mount Pleasant, Penn. He was traveling west to buy cattle in a wagon pulled by one horse. He picked up a young man, whose name was believed to be Whiting, on the road about seven miles from Belmont. The two stopped at a tavern and then continued on. Twenty minutes later, Whiting returned to the same tavern with the horse and wagon, which he said he bought from Brooks. Whiting then went to another tavern two miles away, and he had a gold watch that he said Brooks had loaned him so that he could keep track of the time tomeet back up with Brooks. This caused suspicion, and he was chased and eventually arrested. In addition to the watch, he had $25 in cash. Whiting was believed to have deserted from West Point the previous week. I am providing the above summary because I obtained a copy of the actual article from a copyrighted source. - Lynn Stevenson Fisher Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
