Will any of the Tompkins Co. list members be visiting the public library in Ithaca in the near future? They have in their collection of microfilm, an obituary from 1872 that I would very much like to obtain a copy of at a reasonable price. If you can help with this, please get in touch with me. Thank you. Marie __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Tired of spam? Yahoo! Mail has the best spam protection around http://mail.yahoo.com

Democrat and Chronicle June 19, 1930 Head of Ithaca Schools, Killed in Crash, Was National Figure Dr. Frank D. Boynton Held Honor Degrees from Many Colleges Ithaca, June 18 (Special Dispatch)-Dr. Frank D. Boynton, who died last night following an automobile accident on Long Island, had had a remarkable career which included in addition to his nearly 40 years of service in the Ithaca school system, activity in educational circles throughout the county and state as a writer and speaker. At the time of his death he was deeply immersed in plans for the new Junior High School in Ithaca, a building project which he long had advocated. He also had undertaken the editorship of a department of superintendology for the Journal of Education, which had just announced the institution of this feature for the coming Fall. Next Monday he was to have received the honorary degree of LL.D. from his alma mater, Middlebury College, at Middlebury, Conn. Heads Education Group Dr. Boynton was elected in 1929 president of the National Education Association and last Summer he was the association's official representative at a meeting of the International Educaiton Association in Oxford, England. A vigorous advocate of the principle of democracy in education, Dr. Boynton's speeches received wide publicity and in recent years he had taken issue with certain university educators, including President Lowell of Harvard on the question of exclusiveness in higher education. Born in Potsdam on April 29, 1863, the son of Franklin and Julina (Hayes) Boynton, Frank David Boynton was graduated from the Potsdam Normal School in 1889 and then attended Middlebury College, where he received the degree of A.B. in 1891. Two years later he received the degree of A.M. for Hamilton College. Syracuse University conferred upon him that of D.P.D. in 1903. For two years following his graduation from college he was principal of the union School and Academy at Webster and then came to Ithaca as principal of the high school. He was made superintendent of schools in June, 1900. Commission Member in War Since the organization of the state examinations board under the late Andrew S. Draper, Dr. Boynton had been a member of that board. During the World War he was a member of the commission on the emergency in education of the National Education Association and was one of the original drafters of the federal education program. For 12 years he was chairman of the executive committee representing the superintendents of the state at Albany and worked for changes in the education law from which the smaller cities, villages and rural districts now are benefitting. His associates elected him president of the State Council of School Superintendents, of the State Teachers Association, and made him a member of the Executive Commission of the Department of Superintendence of the National Education Association, vice president and president. Among Dr. Boynton's books are Plane and Solid Geometry, Syllabus of Civics, Manual of Civics, Civics of New York State, School Civics, Actual Government of New York State and Civics for First Voters. If you do send this link around, please include this announcement: The Institute on the Application of Geospatial Technology (IAGT) is pleased to announce that registration is now open for the 6th annual Conference on Remote Sensing Education (CORSE 2006). When: June 26-30, 2006 Where: IAGT, at Cayuga Community College, Auburn, NY CORSE 2006 will bring together K-14 educators from around the US to learn about geographic information systems (GIS), global positioning systems (GPS) and remote sensing imagery. Following a three-day intensive exploration of GIS and GPS, participants work in teams to develop lesson plans that tie the use of these technologies to service-learning projects in their communities. As in the past, CORSE will consist of both introductory and intermediate-advanced tracks, to accommodate the various levels of GIS expertise of conference participants who will not only receive a week of intensive training in GPS and GIS, but will also be amongst a cadre of educators with whom they can share ideas. Thanks to generous support through our training partners at the Mid-Hudson Institute for Service Learning, we are able to offer a limited number of scholarships for teams from New York State, which will cover registration, lodging, and an ArcView site license for the team’s school. A team should consist of an educational professional, a student (grade 7-12), and a local official or representative from a community-based organization. Pre-service teachers, as well as teams led by 4-H staff are also encouraged to apply. A registration fee of $300 covers costs of the 5-day conference. This fee includes all books and materials used in the conference, a GPS receiver and PC cable for downloading data to your computer, as well as an opportunity to purchase ArcView 3.3 software site license at a greatly discounted rate. Meals are included in this fee, as well. Transportation to and from the Holiday Inn to Cayuga Community College will also be provided for participants who are not commuting from home during the conference. College and graduate credit is available. Some of the names you have mentioned are included in this bible… It starts with Henry>Harrison >Norman >Hattie"VanOrder Birch> Leslie Van Order Birch. It also includes dates for Rueben H. and Harry Phillips, Hattie’s brothers. It is a large family bible that was published in 1790. The dates start in 1796 and the last date is 1904. I found the will posted by John Van Order for this Harrison Van Order on Ancestry Message Board on Apr 27, 1999. It includes some of the names and dates mentioned in this bible. The marriages in the bible are: David M Foot married to Laura Lyon on Feb 27, 1833 David M Foot married to Harrett H. Wheeler (Wheeber?) Feb 9 1856 Harrison Van Order married to Hattie E. Foot on Aug 14, 1852 Norman S. Van Order married to Sallie J. Meaker on July 3, 1872 Rueben Vanorder married to Mable Norton on May 23, 1902 Hattie Van Order married to Parker Birch on Sept 21, 1897 Harry P. Van Order married Apr 23, 1903. (there is no wife written on this entry, just the marriage date.) It also includes births, marriages, deaths, etc. There was a hand written piece of paper found in the bible as follows: H.V Born March 28th 1796 E.V " Nov 19, 1801 A. V " Dec 13, 1820 E. V " Apr 6 1823 L. V " Sept 10 1824 H. V " March 7, 1827 N.V " Jan 13 1834 D. V. "Delia Sept 15, 1835 Martha V " Nov 12 1837 Maranda V " Feb 13 1840 Joana V. " Feb 15 1842 Norman S. V " May 27 1853 I can match up H.V. and E.V as Henry and Elizabeth Van Order…, H.V born 1834 would be Harrison, also Norman S. but the rest are not mentioned in bible. When I seen it on Ebay I HAD to bid on it. It’s a shame that these old bibles are out there and the family members don’t even know about them. I have done research on the Van Nurden/Vannurden, Van Orden and Van Norden families for 34 years and was very excited to run across this Van Order bible. I have always made a record of all the various spellings, including this one, but had no record of this family in my database. I hope some of this information will be helpful. Sue (Van Nurden) Iliff
As I have a Stella DIMICK in my files, I was going to respond to Fran with a question of my own, but Marsha's message made that unnecessary. The Stella DIMICK I have was born about 1871 to Jessie and Susan (CONGDON) DIMICK. In the 1880 Census, they were enumerated in Covert, Seneca Co., NY. Jessie and Susan are both buried in Grove Cemetery, Ulysses. I have nothing else about Stella. Do you? FYI: Susan (CONGDON) DIMICK was the sister of my gg-grandmother Sarah (CONGDON) (ODELL) LEWIS. Hi Joan, I can't help you with the NY State Census info, but I checked the 1910 Federal Census. In a page dated 5&6 May 1910, David (age 60) and Nora (age 44) SWARTZ with children Emily (age 19), William (age 15), Dorcas (age 10), Herman (age 9), and Marjory (age 7) were enumerated in Hector Twp, Potter, PA (ED 119 page 8A, stamped page number 287). They were also enumerated in Hector Twp in the 1900 Census (ED 112 page 12A, stamped 208, enumerated 27 June 1900). They were indexed as SWARTY. Bill Hart Subject: 1915-1925 census From: Joan Meddaugh <lpmj@juno.com> Date: Fri, 28 Apr 2006 18:56:27 -0400 To: NYTOMPKI-L@rootsweb.com Would someone that has access to the Tompkins Co. NY 1915- 1925 census for the Trumansburg/Ulysses area of NY be willing to do a check for me? I am hoping by checking in the 1915 census to find a Nora Schwartz, her daughter's Ella Dorcas and Marjorie. Ella Dorcas, ( she would have gone by her middle name of Dorcas) would have been either 15 or 16 years of age depending on when the census for that year was taken. Marjorie would have been age 6 or 7. I am also looking and hoping to find if a Mary Swartz Ellsworth and husband Roy W. Ellsworth were in the area during that time. I can place them in T-burg in 1920 as working in a candy store that he either owned or was manager of but don't know if they were there previous to that or after that in 1925. I know that Mary was in Niagara Falls in 1930 and was listed as a widow. Her mother Nora by then was also a widow and living in Niagara Falls. I know for certain that Nora and Dorcas and Marjorie were in the Ulysses-T-burg area in 1917 because their sister Emily came for a visit and that is where she died of meningitis. I am hoping to trace Nora and her daughters from Ulysses, PA to Ulysses, NY and then to Candor. I have filled in the years from 1920 to 1925 as being in Candor but not sure when they came there from the Ulysses, NY area. I would also like to know where to go an look for property information? I am hoping to find information that would tell me if and when Mary's brother Jim Swartz bought property for his mother Nora there in the area of Ulysses/T-burg. I was told that he had brought property there so she could have a small business to keep her afloat. If no evidence is found in the 1915 census for Nora and her girls would someone be willing to check the 1910 census for that same area to see if they were there then? I am also wondering if there is a city or town directory for Ulysses/ T-burg areas. Perhaps that might be of help to me as well. Sure would appreciate any help someone can give me. Joan

Perhaps a clue from the 1888-1889 Ithaca Directory: Edward Doyle of Doyle and Cleary 23 E. State St., Ithaca I've no idea what was at that location in the late 1880s but this might give you an avenue for further research. All the other Doyles were residing at 128 W. State St. in the same Directory. Happy Hunting! Joyce, Raleigh, NC
Would someone that has access to the Tompkins Co. Joan

The 1880 census shows him as a hotel keeper. What hotel - where in Ithaca? It also shows his sisters Hattie and Breezy, and brother Dennis a couple of servents and 5 or 6 boarders. Would appreciate any help!
