I'm traveling to Tompkins Co. in a few weeks. I know I have ancestors that lived in Lansing and Groton from around 1805 to 1825. Would love some advice on "don't miss" research sources. I've checked the more obvious places - Deeds, etc. - that are available from Family History Centers. Would really love some suggestions for less-obvious research areas that may prove fruitful. Thank you. Joyce

I was told that my Gilbert H. Van Houten of Veteran, Chemung County, NY was the son of Aaron Van Houten of Ithaca. In Aaron's will he has a son named Gilbert. But it doesn't say where Gilbert was living at the time of Aaron's death or Gilbert's age at the time of Aaron's death. I then looked for property deeds for the land that was mentioned in the will. I wasn't able to located a property deed for Gilbert inheriting land from his father Aaron. Is there anyone who can help me figure this out or maybe make a suggestion as to where I can look next. Also, does anyone know where Aaron/Adrian Van Houten is buried? I looked at the cemetery lists on the Tompkins County gen web site but I wasn't able to find him listed. I look forward to hearing from someone. Thanks, S. Rozell --------------------------------- Yahoo! Messenger with Voice. Make PC-to-Phone Calls to the US (and 30+ countries) for 2¢/min or less.

Hi List, I came across the following web page regarding names and addresses for some NY cemeteries in various counties. Hope it may be of assistance! Kathleen http://www.dos.state.ny.us/cmty/CemeteryList.HTM âThis is a listing of more than 1,800 Not-for-Profit cemeteries under the jurisdiction of the Department of State - Division of Cemeteries. This list does not include some 4,000 cemeteries owned by religious, private and municipal organizations. This is NOT a complete list of all cemeteries in New York Stateâ. as of December 2005 __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Tired of spam? Yahoo! Adelaide was born about 1846, and married Thomas Byron Reynolds sometime after 1870. They moved to his county of origin, Wayne County. He died in 1894, and she died between 1915 and 1922. Adelaide and her sister lived with extended family in her earlier years in Genoa, however there is a hypothesis that the family vacilitated between that county and Tompkins County, in a vacinity refered to as something like "the four corners" or whatnot. Anyone who has anything-- please feel free to email me or post a reply- far reaching information or not-- I will look at anything at this point! Thanks a bunch!

Unfortunately-- that town clerk was absolutely wrong to do that unless she had the express permission of the NYS Archives in Albany. Because of the fire in Albany, many of the old papers were burned up, so the NYS Archives requires through their records retention policies to have town clerks get their permission to destroy pre-1910 town records. The town is mandated to follow the rules of the MU-1 NYS retention and disposition schedule. If you go to the NYS Archives website, you can get more information there about the policies if you contact that region's Records Advisory Officer (RAO). Thompkins county may be in region 6 or 7. Please pass this along to any town clerks who are thinking of destroying old records because of space-concerns, lack of knowledge. It is a sadness when the old stuff gets destroyed, huh?
