    1. [NYTOMPKI] MURRAY, Mertilla, born 1830 Cayuga County NY
    2. Nancy Malcomb
    3. I am trying to discover any info on Mertilla MURRAY, born about 1830 to Lewis & Sally MURRAY, in Cayuga County NY. Starting with 1840, her parents are in Lansing, Tompkins County, and this is where I discovered Mertilla's existance. She is named on the 1850 census, and the 1840 has kids the correct ages/sexes for Mertilla and her brother Milo. Milo was my great-great grandfather. I find nothing for Mertilla after the 1850 census listing. The main reason I would like to find Mertilla is because Milo's first wife, Harriet HARTMAN, died in 1869 and while I found Milo sans his daughter in 1870 in Alabama, I have been unable to find his daughter, Lily, until she shows up graduating from Lockport High School in the mid-1880's and then when she married Ransford S Miller Jr, from Ithaca NY when both were in Japan. Ransford later was chief of far eastern affairs for the state department and also was Consul General to Seoul Korea for many years. According to Milo's bible, Lily or Lillie was born 11/9/1864, presumably in Lansing as that is where they lived. On various records, Lily gave her birth date as 1867, 1869 and even 1872. She also gave her birthplace as Lyons, Wayne County NY and also Lockport, Niagara County NY. She also shows up as Lily, Lillie, and Lillian. My thought was that when Harriet died, Milo might have left his daughter with family. I have not found her with his parents: Lewis H & Sally MURRAY, although they are on the Lansing census records thru 1880. I believe Harriet's parents are John & Gertrude Hartman from Lyons NY, but I don't know this for a fact, nor do I find Lily living with any Hartmans or even listed as a Hartman. This leads me to suppose that she might have been left with Milo's sister, Mertilla, but, again, I have not been able to find any records for her beyond the 1850 census. I would assume she married, thus would have a different last name. I am hopeful the first name "Mertilla" is unusual enough that someone might have noted her while researching for other people??? Lewis MURRAY died 7/20/1896 and is buried in Lansingville Cemetery. Sally MURRAY died 1/9/1881 and is buried there also. I would like to find an obituary for them as those might lead to Mertilla and/or Lily. Any help is greatly appreciated.
