    3. I sure wish that I knew more also. The tombstone is in Green Hills Cemetery in Dryden, NY. It is part of the family stone......It just shows Elmira Bishop Hammon.(not Hammond) Birthdate of 1832, but no death date. She could very well been named after a town here in New York, because Elmira is just a short way from the Dryden/Ithaca area. Maybe she's not there at all, and was divorced from the Hammon spouse. As I said, it's a family stone and so her name could have been put there when the stones were made.........I've heard of that happening. When I brought up the web page for Green Hills, she's not listed, so I would sooner believe that she's on the stone, but not buried there. -----Original Message----- From: nytompki-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:nytompki-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Mlkquilts@aol.com Sent: Wednesday, December 27, 2006 1:41 PM To: nytompki@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [NYTOMPKI] Graves, Bishop, Hammon, Head, Clark Patty, I wish you knew more about Elmira Bishop. All I know is that she was born 1837 in New York and died 1896 in New York and had 10 kids. Also, that her name was definitely Elmira and not Almira as the census records sometimes show. The family says she was named after the town of Elmira, NY. One of Elmira and George's grandchildren married into the Clark family. 1. [NYTOMPKI] Graves, Bishop, Hammon, Head, Clark
    2. Patricia Woolschlager
    3. GRAVES, Mary Jane BISHOP, was born in the village of Ithaca, May 13, 1829, the eldest of five children of Joel and Maria BISHOP who were natives of Lansing. They soon, however, removed to Dryden, where Mr. BISHOP engaged in the manufacture of guns. He was a son of Dr. James BISHOP.. In the summer of 1857 she married Jackson GRAVES,( the son of Jacob Graves and Edith Jackson), a teacher in the Pottsville (Pa.) Union Graded School. She and her husband accepted an invitation to open a select school in Dryden, N.Y., in the fall of 1860, and this developed into what was known for ten years as the Dryden Seminary. In the spring of 1861 they bought about three acres of land and erected the building that was eventually occupied by the Dryden Union Graded School According to 1880 Danby Census, they had an adopted son, Charles D. born about 1870. Mary Jane had a sister, Elmira (Almira) born 1837 who possibly married a Hammon. There was also a brother, Benton Bishop, 1834-1896 who is buried in Green Hills Cemetery in Dryden, NY. A sister, Anna , b1836-d1871 married Uriah Clark b1829-d1889 They are also buried in Green Hills. A brother, George 1844-1847 is buried in Old Pioneer Cemetery in Dryden, N Mary Jane, Elmira, Benton, Anna and George are the children of Joel Bishop and Maria Head. Joel is the son of Dr. James Bishop from Lansing. Would like to know the mother. I've been told that Maria is the daughter of Brittain Head, also of Lansing. Would like to know the mother, also. Anna Bishop is my 2nd great grandmother. Thank you for any help that anyone might be able to give. Patty

I also am interested in marriage & death records. 1879 History of McLean county bio for John Sager reports Tompkins county birth, move to Tioga, & 1 child born/died before move to Stephenson county, IL by 1850 census. I have recently been searching newspapers of the day for obits for family memebers. Unfortunately, John's was typical of the day; little family info, lots of sorrow for 'loss of this fine citizen'........ This is getting really long for a board posting! In 1857 (July 4) Mr. Selover came to Elwood, Kan., and soon after engaged in the livery business, being the first in that branch in town. In connection with the same, he also for a time kept the Great Western Hotel and operated the 'bus line. In 1870 he came to Wathena, continuing the livery and omnibus line business until the completion of the St. Joe & Denver R. R. to Wathena, when that industry became something of the past. In 1875 he engaged in the manufacture of flour. He has a large and well equipped mill, doing a business that will compare favorably with any in the county. However, that source appears to be incorrect in the statement that David Quigg is the son of Capt. John McQuigg. John McQuigg, Jr. and his second wife Sarah Coburn McQuigg did have a son named David, but he was not born unitl 11/27/1791. David Quigg, who married Harriet Pumpelly, was born in 1781 and the 1850 and 1860 census bear this out. David Quigg, Jr was the son of David and Mary Harvell McQuigg. David, Sr. was a brother to Capt. John McQuigg and according to family history, David (who also served in the Rev. War), dropped the "Mc" from his surname and his descendants went by the name Quigg, although when David, Jr. and Harriet married it did list him as McQuigg, instead of Quigg. David Quigg came to Tompkins Co., NY and operated a store as early as 1801 (Landmarks of Tompkins County, New York by John H. Selkreg, 1894; D. Mason & Co., Publisher) David, Jr. would have been 20 years of age in 1801, certainly young to be starting a store on his own, but possible I guess. I have not yet learned what happened to John's son David b. 1791, no information on him has turned up. Thank you again for the reply.

According to our McQuigg family history, Patience McQuigg was born in Derry, Rockingham Co., NH, the last child to be born there, before the McQuigg family moved to Owego, Tioga Co., NY. This is the first time I have heard about the posibility that they were in Ulster Co., NY. It's certainly possible that the family passed through Ulster County, on their way to Tioga County. In the History of Tioga County, it stated that Patience's father, John McQuigg came to Owego in 1788, but no definite information about him prior to that year, as far as where he resided. John McQuigg had a brother David McQuigg, who dropped the "Mc" from his surname and that line descended as Quigg, but as far as I know, his line was the only one to do so, although the occasional census record has several of John's line incorrectly listed as Quigg. Your reply has brought up new questions and I appreciate your sharing. Thank you very much.

    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: Denton, Yaple, Beers, Quigg Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.newyork.counties.tompkins/5021.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: I am a descendant of Peter Yaple and his first wife Charity Beers. Most of my information comes from the book " The Yaple Family in America" by Doris Yaple Geist and Roland Yaple. In the book Peter had 2 wives, Charity Beers and Patience Quigg Denton. I have also looked thru the census records. You will find that Mary A. Yaple was his daughter & third child thru Charity Beers. Mary never married. By my records, Peter and Charity had 9 children before she passed away in 1827. I am a descendant of their sixth child Elbert Yaple. Peter married Patience - May 10, 1828 I have Patience listed as born March 27, 1788 in Kingston, Ulster Co. NY They had 2 daughters Jane Yaple born 1830 and later believed to reside in California and Harriet Yaple born June 2, 1832 died 19 Sept. 1848. Both of these births were recorded in a family bible according to Doris Yaple Geist's book mentioned earlier. Patience died June 18, 1846 and is buried in King's Cemetery in Ithaca, NY along with Harriet, Peter and Charity. Sorry I can't help you with Richard Denton
