I have a picture of my grandfather Horace Warren DeVed) taken while he was at work at Westchester Lighting. His parents lived in New Rochelle. He married my grandmother (Jennie Collard Stocum) in 1909 and they moved to Bedford Hills in Westchester County. Gramp was a mechanical engineer and had some part in the construction of the Croton Dam and Hayden Planetarium, among other things. After he left Westchester Lighting I don't know what firm he worked for specifically, but he commuted by train into NYC. I don't recall any mention of reimbursement for medical expenses, but that is an interesting bit of information. Unfortunately my mother died in 2005 so I've lost a source of info to support what little I know. Thanks again. I looked him up in a 1908 Cornell alumni directory I acquired during my research. It shows him working for Westchester Lighting Co. in New Rochelle, N.Y., if that is of any interest to you. I would suspect he came down with typhoid from your story. Typhoid was an awful disease, and 28 Cornell students died. Do you recall your mother or grandmother ever mentioning anything about your grandfather's parents getting financial assistance from Andrew Carnegie to pay his medical bills from the epidemic? Carnegie, in part to mollify angry parents, offered to pay the bills (which could be substantial, as much as a year's wages for a workingman) of any Cornell student who had contracted the disease. If I run across anything that specifically mentions your grandfather, I'll pass it along. Thanks, David DeKok, ddekok@mac.com. Unfortunately anyone who might be able to shed more light on his experience has died, but I remember both my grandmother and mother telling me about the epidemic and how "Gramp" made it through. I do not know for certain whether or not he actually contracted typhoid. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Hi Folks, My Robert LITTLE was born 1775-1777 NJ and removed to Ithaca area, purchasing a wood lot in NW Danby in 1810. Wife Hannah/Anna COMPTON and children Simeon (m. Hannah HOOKER,) John (m. Lydia HEDGES & Amanda YOUNGS,) Juliaett (married Wm TUCKER) and four others appear in Danby on 1820, 1825, 1850 & 1860 census. Some of family buried in Morris Chapel Cem., Caroline. If you have a woman born 1810-20 or 1825-30 in Danby whose parents were born in NJ - they might be LITTLEs. Robert LITTLE died 14 Mar 1864? and Anna COMPTON LITTLE on 18 Oct 1862 - would obituaries or death certificates of that era include birthplace or parents?? Please contact me if you'd like to compare notes or with any on breaking this brick wall. Please let me know if you'd like to trade research in Tompkins for work done on your lines in Sussex county, NJ. Thanks, Cathy DiPietro list admin NJSusse

My great great great grandfather was Jonathan Lunger and one of his descents has done a great deal of research on the family. We are planning on getting together so that I can have the information. In the mean time, if you are interested, Jonathan Lunger was murdered and was a big story here in Tompkins Co. I have researched the articles that were in the paper and have them on my website. Take a look. www.myfamiliesbranchesandleaves.com I know my cousin says he has filing cabinets full of information his grandfather did. Hopefully I will speak with him soon and be able to help you. Someone who knows the answer may see your query in a few months or a few years. You could go to the area yourself and ask around, and learn something more meaningful than expecting others to get the answer for you. Bear in mind that people who act crabby or resentful -- while asking favors -- may discourage someone else's desire to be helpful.
