    3. Marsha, I wish to thank you and Judy for your help. I am contacting the Tompkins County Clerk's office regarding a search of the census, and it would appear off hand that they are willing to do it (they have a fee schedule for such work). Haines Brown

    3. The Tompkins County Clerk's office in Ithaca has the 1825 and 1835 NYS census for Hector. There is no surviving 1845 census and the Schuyler County Clerk's office has the 1855 census. Marsha -----Original Message----- From: nytompki-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:nytompki-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Frostfreedet@aol.com Sent: Monday, March 19, 2007 2:49 AM To: nytompki@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [NYTOMPKI] 1830 (1825?) census for Tompkins County Haines, If you are looking for 1825 data, both the 1825 and 1835 census enumeration records, when they survive, are in each of the Town Clerks' offices as original pages. I believe the New York State Library microfilmed these back in the 1960s or 1970s, but unless LDS has acquired the films I don't know of any way to access the images other than going to Albany. Or to the Town Clerk. I do know that the 1825 and 1835 survive for Hector Town. The Town Clerk cannot do lookups -- there is no index. I do not know whether the Clerk would be willing to make photocopies (or even if the Clerk has a copying machine). You can find contact information on the web for the various Town Clerks. 1. Re: [NYTOMPKI] 1830 census for Tompkins County
    2. Haines wants to know how to have someone do a >>look up with photocopying from the 1830 (1825?) census for what was then Tompkins County<< You can get your nearest library to borrow the film by inter-library loan from the National Archives. Major libraries already have it. Utilize nearest LDS Stake 'family research center' to do the same thing. Either of above will include few dollars charge for processing the loan. You can subscribe to Ancestry.com which has the film in digital form that you can save to computer or print or both. They often have free 2-week trials but you have to give them a credit card number. Perhaps you know someone who has a paid Ancestry subscription who would be willing to use their paid subscription to download what you are looking for, if you are not willing to pay to do this yourself. You'd have to judge for yourself how much else you could learn from census and other records that would make subscribing worthwhile. Many libraries also subscribe to Ancestry or similar sites offering census images, and may offer you access through their computer--it should be worth a phone call to your nearest library to find out. If you are not very mobile you may be able to arrange for a Library staff person to find what you want and send the image to you as an e-mail attachment. Good hunting, Judy
