    1. Re: [NYTOMPKI] 1830 (1825?) census for Tompkins County
    2. Bonnie McDonald
    3. Haines, I don't have a direct Brown connection that I know of, but I'm suspicious that there may be some tie between Hathaways or Clarks and Browns. In the 1860 NY, Tompkins, Lansing census my Elizabeth Carver (dau of Levi & Candace (Hathaway) Clark) was listed with 2 of her children, John and Dee, in house of John Brown, 50, and Alexander Brown, 45. In 1870 NY, Cattaraugus, Portville census, in Henry Clark (son of Levi & Sarah Clark) and wife Adalle household are listed Francis, 26, and Alma, 22, Brown. Yet another possible Brown connection is in the house of Ashabel E. Hathaway, 1870 NY, Cayuga, Summerhill census, is listed Mary Ann Brown, 54. This Ashabel is probably son of Ebenezer Hathaway, same location in 1860 census. Has you research turned up any of these Browns? Thanks, Bonnie

Stephen Bates Born June 12, 1754 in Coventry, Kent Co. Rhode Island, died Oct. 30, 1849 in Erie Co, NY married three women that I can see by the bible pages. First was a Susan (either Baker or Parker depending on how you read the bad writing) Barnes, whose only child was James Bates in 1787. Phebe Nichols is the most recognized wife of Stephen who is a baptist preacher, then Katherine Davis in 1835 when he is 71 is the least. Once you plug in Stephen Bates son of Francis Bates and Mary, Francis second wife being Elizabeth Bissel, you will find all the information you need, except the key link in the Bates Bible which ties it all together. With Stephen as the Father of James Bates many questions are answered. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Thank you for your message. I had prepared a message to send to several counties' message boards and spent three hours yesterday trying to do exactly as you suggested, but for some reason both SSDI and Rootsweb require a username which I don't have. The confirmation message I received when I registered mentions no username and I have tried everything I can imagine. My nametag won't work either. I can edit old post-its to SSDI, so I know my password is valid, but neither will allow me to post new messages. A site search for the term "username" also comes up empty. So there is no help on the "Password and Username" page. Have e-mailed the Help Desk but received no reply. Any ideas, short of subscribing to each mail list? Thanks. Sally Dykeman, 1st wife of Henry Yaple, they had 5 children of which only 3 are listed in the book. The children are: Harriet Yaple b: 10 Aug 1819, married a Mr. Norton of Illinois. (Sarah)Eliza Yaple b: 22 Feb 1823 married Caleb Earl of Ithaca (book said they had no children). Perry (Piersy) Yaple b: 9 March 1825 in Ithaca, married Martha Maria Burley 25 Sept. 1862 in Pacheco, Contra Costa, Calif. I have 3 children listed for Perry and Martha. Henry Yaple, Sally's husband was the 5th child of Jacob Yaple and Maria Dumond. He was born 28 Aug. 1791 and died 21 Aug. 1863. Jacob Yaple was one of the founders of Ithaca, NY and fought in the American Revolution. The book lists Henry as the first white child born at Ithaca, NY. Though some will dispute that. Jacob lost his land in Ithaca to some shady tax or land dealings and then moved his family to Danby, NY. Henry's brother Peter is my Ancestor. Jacob, Peter, Henry and wives are buried in Kings Cemetery, located on Stone Quarry Road in Ithaca, NY. I have seen a picture of Henry and his wives tombstones on line, but for some reason they are not listed on the list I have of people buried in King's Cemetery. Henry's 2nd wife's name is Mary S. Burgess her name and dates are easy to make out on the tombstone. You can read Henry's name, but can't make much else out from the picture and you really can't see anything on the third stone. They are all placed together in cement flat on the ground. If you have further questions on the Yaple family I might be able to help. 3. Thanks Kathleen, I'll try it! I registered and changed my e-mail address last November -- after a break of several years. Has this new policy gone into effect since November? By the way, I did find a cemetery listing for Harry and Bertha on the Broward County Genealogical Society site. They're buried in the Lauderdale Memorial Park Cemetery, Block 10, Circle 3. - Fort Lauderdale, Florida. 3. Good morning, Kathleen. Thanks. Harry was born in Watkins Glen, Schuyler County, New York and appears (SSDI) to have died in Fort Lauderdale, Broward County, Florida. Bertha's maiden name is unknown as is her birthplace. She appears to have died (SSDI) in Hollywood, Broward County, Florida. I would love to know her maiden name and origins. The 1920 and 1930 Fed. 1. Re: [NYTOMPKI] 1830 (1825?) census for Tompkins County
    2. Haines Brown
    3. Judy, Thank you for your very helpful reply. I was finally able to resolve the problem of years when I realized that the 1825 and 1835 census was a state census, and the 1820, 30, 40 census was a federal census. I gather NY held those censuses because of its interest in the agricultural economy. Since I don't really know the location of my Brown, and there are so many around in the early 19th century Tompkins Co., I rely on the census. I've got some records to track down from the federal census, but the state census is more challenging. In 1991 the Tompkins County Genealogical Society published The New York State Census for Tomplins County (available in the Tompkins Co. library and I supposed elsewhere), but this book is described as an "abstract". I'm not sure if it is an alphabetized index, a non-alphabetized list of heads of household without agricultural information, or a copy of the entire record. I will do as you suggest and pursue the Revolutionary War research tutorial available from Rootsweb.com's home page, and about.com. There was one Brown who received Bounty Land in the town of Lansing, but I don't know if there's any relation to my own Brown. What I've read on the Military Tracts suggest there were a lot of land transfers and simple land speculation. There's no reason to assume my Brown, even if it turns out he owned a Military Tract, was descended from a Revolutionary War fighter. My Benjamin may indeed have been classified as a hired hand within someone else's family even if we were married and the father of children. However, I have reason to suspect he worked on the steam ferry boat transiting Lake Cayuga. In 1838 he moved to Camden apparently only because his occupation at the time (1840) was "engineer" and in the 1830s a steam ferry service was established between Camden and Philadelphia. Thank you again for all your help and encouragement. Haines Brown

    1. Re: [NYTOMPKI] 1830 (1825?) census for Tompkins County
    2. Dear Haines, If you went to the 1825 State Census listing whose location I gave you, you will have found that no Benjamin Brown was listed in Hector Town. The 1825 and 1835 enumerations were State Census, whereas of course the 1820, 1830 were US Decennial Census enumerations. New York is just one of the States that did its own enumerations for specific purposes. The USGenWeb site for New York State, County Selection page, gives you the geopolitical history of each County. Tompkins was formed in 1817 from parts of Cayuga and Seneca. While there were itnerlopers at times, this part of NY had practically no settlers until after the Treaty of Ft. Stanwix, 1794. Read up on the history of the Military Townships to get more insight as to how the Towns were set up. Hector and Ulysses have somewhat complicated histories related to the Military Townships. Try the Revolutionary War research tutorial available from Rootsweb.com's home page, and about.com for some leads. Not finding people in the Decennial or State Census lists does not mean they were not there. Both of the above up to 1850 only list head of household. If your Benjamin was a hand working for someone and living with them, he would probably not be listed as head of household. The 1830s were a turbulent time. A bad depression and the bank collapse 'panic of 1837' were related reasons that people were on the move, looking for livelihood. Some of our more frustrating-to-research ancestors may have lived only a year or two (or less) in a given place in this period. Good hunting, Judy

    3. > Great. I have a few photocopied pages of the 1825 and 1835 census. Tell me > exactly who you are looking for on the off chance that I may have copied the > page you might need. Marsha Marsha, Your offer is very kind. The person I'm looking for is a Benjamin W. Brown, born c. 1806 and who moved from what was probably Tompkins County in 1838. I'm not sure where he lived in Tompkins County, which is why I'm starting with the census. The only hint so far is that it was in Perry City (Hector), and that his children ended up in Watkins Glen, which subsequently were in Schuyler Co. I can't find any Benjamin Browns in Tompkins Co. until 1830. In 1830 there is a Benjamin Brown from Newfield and from Ithaca, and in 1840 there are Benjamin Browns from Dryden and Newfield. This probably makes three Benjamins, of which so far I have checked one (Ithaca), and he is not the Benjamin I'm looking for. I'll do the Dryden and Newfield Benjamins in the next few days. Let me raise a question if I may. I looked at the NY Census index for 1820, 1830 and 1840 and on that basis took a look at an actual record for the Ithaca Benjamin via Heritage Quest. I'm trying to reconcile the years. Officially there was a federal census in 1810, 1820, 1830, and 1840, but at the Tompkins County level, it seems to have startd with 1825 and 1835. How are these different datings to be reconciled? If these are the same as the 1820, 1830 or 1840 federal census, then I seem to already have a way to access the full census, but otherwise I've not been accessing the right records. Haines Brown

    1. [NYTOMPKI] Digital Scans of 1938 Air Photos BEWARE !!!
    2. Bill Hecht
    3. Well don't rush out and order digital scans from the National Archives! I did and am VERY disappointed in what I received. I know the problem but as of yet have not pinned down what exactly went wrong and what the correction is. I had old paper prints of what I ordered and for the most part they were evenly exposed across the whole paper print. However the digital scans are sufering from anywhere from proper exposure to over-exposure in the center to dark to VERY dark at the edges and corners. So dark that detail is totally lost. I had the scans done by King Visual Technologies. I talked to them and they said that the problem is with the original negative. I still have not determined if the ORIGINAL truely is the original or when the original was migrated (copied ) to another film or even to another sized film. The digital scans do have more detail thatn the old paper prints but they also have a lot more scratches. My understanding is that when you ask King Visuals for a paper print they have a mask that gives them an evenly exposed print, corner to corner. They can not make a mask when they scan so thy play in Photoshop curves and levels to correct the overall scan, This results in the loss of even more detail in the highlighted center section. To properly scan one should actually do two or three scans and combine the best out of each. Optimize once for the highlights and once for the shadows. Or make a radial gradatioal mask and apply it to the digital scan. So if you oder BEWARE! and only order one to see what kind of quality you get. Even that might not assure you of uniformity because each roll of film might be different and the coverage area may have been photographed on different days.
