Although the name Long didn't ring a bell with her, she did say that their family were friends back during that time period with the Morey's from the Freeville area of Tompkins County. She couldn't remember any of their first names but if provided a few, she might recognize some. She's in her 80's so it's understandable. I went to school in Dryden back in the 60's and early 1970 with some Morey's, believe his first name was Jim but I'm not sure - it's been quite awhile. 1. [NYTOMPKI] Ballards in Tompkins County, NY
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: BJ_OReilly Surnames: Ballard Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.newyork.counties.tompkins/5062/mb.ashx Message Board Post: I have been looking for ancestors of my Levi Ballard for years. Someone suggested that a Delevage Ballard (found on the 1850 Census) might be a relation, as he had a son Horace Ballard, and Levi had a brother Horace. Levi was born in about 1794 in NY and died in 1866 in Oakland Co., Michigan. I have been searching out the Genweb for Tompkins Co., NY and found Levi Ballard listed as a Head of House Hold. The numbers listed with him appear to match the children in the household in 1820. I knew that Levi was from NY, but I never knew which county to try looking in. In 1825 in Hector, Tompkins Co., NY I found a Jeremiah Ballard listed. And a Leo Ballard listed, but no Levi, I wonder if Leo should be Levi. I suspect that Jeremiah is related somehow to Levi as Levi named 2 sons Jeremiah. The first died at about 6 years of age and the second one at 2 days old. Levi married a Mary (possibly a Wortman per family lore.) There is information out there on a Levi Ballard and a Mary W! ortman, but they ended up in NJ rather than Michigan. If anyone can help me I would be greatful. Barbara Does anyone know anything about Levi or Jeremiah Ballard. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. 1. [NYTOMPKI] OBITUARY - Cornelius W. BREWER, 1920, GRAND RAPIDS, Kent Co., MI - Ithaca, Tompkins Co. NY - NJ
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: MichaelCronk28 Surnames: BREWER, SCHURTZ Classification: obituary Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.newyork.counties.tompkins/5061/mb.ashx Message Board Post: C.W. BREWER DIES AT NINETY-FIVE Cornelius W. BREWER, 95, one of the oldest residents of this city, died late Monday night. He was born in Ithaca, N.Y. and moved to Kalamazoo in 1856. He resided there until 1914, when upon the death of Mrs. Brewer [Phoebe] he came to Grand Rapids. He leaves one daughter, Mrs. Perry [Belle] SCHURTZ of this city; one son, De Witt BREWER of Kalamazoo; three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Funeral services and burial will be in Kalamazoo. THE GRAND RAPIDS PRESS, Grand Rapids, Mich., Tues., 6 July 1920, Pg. 8, Col. 3, Art. 1 According to the 1900 U.S. Census for Alamo Twp., Kalamazoo Co., MI, Cornelius was born Dec. 1825, in NY. His father was born in New Jersey and his mother in New York. His wife, Pheby Ann, was born July 1829, in New Jersey. They were married c. 1853. Pheby had two children, both of whom survived. At this point, Cornelius or C.W., as he was often denoted, was a farmer. In the 1860 U.S. Census for the Village of Kalamazoo, C.W. Brewer was listed as a Telegraph Repairer - In 1870, a RR Conductor - in 1880, a Conductor on RR. According to records I found on the MIGENWEB site for Kalamazoo Co., MI, Cornelius died of a Fractured Hip, 6 July 1920, Grand Rapids, Kent Co., MI. His wife, Phebe Ann, d. 19 April 1914, of Arteriosclerosis, in Cooper Twp., Kalamazoo Co., MI. Both are bured in the West Cooper Cemetery, Cooper Twp., Kalamazoo Co., MI. I have an AMBROTYPE photograph in a case labeled on the front, PETER BREWER 1803-1881. I believe this must be Cornelius' father, but at this point I have been unable to establish that connection. Any information on this family would be greatly appreciated. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Treman State Park, and others I am copying with this notice/reminder. This Sunday, April 1, the Friends of Robert H. Treman State Park will have its annual meeting, which will be followed by an exclusive presentation about 19th Century hotels in central New York by Michael Tomlan, Director of the Historic Preservation Program at Cornell. This meeting and program are free and pen to the public. This presentation may give us some insight into the appearance and structure of the Enfield Falls Hotel at upper Treman; though we have found the foundation of the this tourist hotel, no one has been able to locate a photograph, though we know at least one did exist. It will take place at 3:00 p.m. in the auditorium at Longview, a senior living community 1/4 mile south of Ithaca College along Route 96B. Please feel free to share this message. 3. Bonnie, Thanks for the note. My initial research is turning up great numbers of Browns early on in the 19th century in Tompkins County, but nothing is working out. I've a Benjamin W. Brown born about the same year as my Benjamin Webb Brown, 1807, but he comes from Orange County. But when I look at the actual census record, it is so faded that nothing can be made out (how they managed to index an invisible page, I'm not sure). I've got another Benjamin Brown born about 1807, but he is in the 1840 census, at which time my Benjamin had already have left New York state. I can't find his wife, Elizabeth Vansant, in the records unless she came from Albany, which I rather doubt (she seems related to the Van Zandts in New Jersay, who are nevertheless called the "New York [City] Van Zandts"). Land records might be of more help, but if I don't know in which town my Benjamin lived (Lansing, Trumansburg, Ithaca, Hector and even possibly Dix in Schuyler Co., etc. they will probably be difficult to track down. Ah well. Thank you for your support. Haines Brown
