Author: lynnfisher3149 Surnames: Brooks, Whiting Classification: death Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.newyork.counties.tompkins/5099.2/mb.ashx Message Board Post: To: RHughes4452 Re: your request for an article in Ithaca Journal on the murder of James Brooks, June 25, 1828, near Belmont. I found an article on the murder in the 7 Jul 1828 issue of the Watch-Tower from Cooperstown, NY. It says that Capt. Jonathan Brooks of Washingtonville, Orange County, NY, was found dead June 24 close to Mt. Pleasant, Penn. He was traveling west in a one-horse wagon to purchase cattle and picked up a young man (Whiting) on the road seven miles from Belmont. They had stopped together at a tavern, left, and then 20 min. later Whiting returned to the tavern alone with the horse and wagon. He then went to another tavern two miles away, and people there became suspicious because he had a gold watch that he said Brooks had loaned him to keep track of the time and meet up with him later. Whiting was then pursued and arrested. Brooks was found in the woods beaten to death. Whiting was believed to have deserted from West Point the previous week. The headline is "Murder and Robbery." The above is a summary in my own words because I go the article from a copyrighted source -- GenealogyBank.com. If you want to get the actual article, you can sign up for a one-month subscription, which I think is about $20, and pull it. What a sad tale of how Jonathan Brooks paid for his mercy to someone else with his life. Was Jonathan Brooks your ancestor? 1. Re: [NYTOMPKI] Surmount Sanatorium- Where was it?
    2. 'cupcakes' wrote, >>One of the folks I'm researching died there in 1934. . . . That's REALLY unusual not to find any other info about it.<< This was probably a sanatorium created for 'treatment' of tuberculosis sufferers. In the 1930s it was believed that sunshine and fresh air were 'cures' but often accompanied by major surgery removing parts of lungs. The fresh-air approach was not efficacious, and of course back then no antibiotics were available. Many more died outside the sanatoriums. What you may have stumbled across is the stigma attached to having tuberculosis victims. It was such an endemic disease all over the country, yet few wanted to admit to it. 'Consumption' was what was usually the attributed cause of death. But if one published the place of death as at a sanatorium, that was admitting the true cause of death. So the obit might give a location without specifying the institution. Sanatoria were typically located in mountain areas -- the Rockies, the Adirondacks, but no few entrepreneurial persons with some or no medical training set them up elsewhere. Good hunting, Judy

I am looking for the ancestors of a Benjamin Jacon van Raalte who was born on November 6, 1822 (according to New York death certificate) and died in New York City on March 7, 1876; who immigrated to the USA around 1847-1849 (according to same death certificate); who was born in "Holland" (no city mentioned) according to several New York census' (1860, 1870, and some of his family after his death); who married a Julia Hanau (born in London to German parents in 1825 and died in New York City in 1912) around 1853-1854 and who had seven children. He and his family lived in New York City for many decades according to 1870 census and next ones; in 1860 they supposedly lived in Ithaka New York. He appears to have been naturalized (became US citizen) in 1868 claiming to be a "British subject, born in Holland". This might mean that he first went to England with his family before coming to the USA. This man does not show up in the family trees from Raalte and Zwartsluis, but he may still be related to the Jewish family? He is listed here as a cigar maker and several van Raalte's were living in London and in the cigar business in the early 1800's. I would be very grateful if someone could find his ancestors, birth certificate, birth city, marriage certificate, or British naturalization. Thank you John A van Raalte 73 Elm Ridge Road Princeton, NJ 08540 USA Tel.: 609-737 1006 Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. I am sincerely hoping that no one is offended by my comment. You don't sound as if your were! If you need any help, I will do whatever I can. Thanks again! I have my own bugaboo with my grandmother's family, as her mother was native american. I am close to finding her origins, but some relatives (of all people) are rather selfish in sharing their finds. I don't understand that, since we are all in the family! I would share anything with a family member in my line! I don't think that there is race going on anywhere! Anyway, when I am searching through the messages, I always get this feeling of "what if I don't look?" Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. "It would be of much greater help to everyone if you place the names of those you are searching for in the subject line." Amen to that. Unspecific queries get bypassed by busy researchers and lessen potential contacts. Which is the main purpose of submitting a query. A much better way to get someone to look at a query is to make it specific. Such as... "Searching, William Agustus ALLEN Family, Ulysses, Tompkins, 1850-1880s"... or similar. Now we know immediately names, locations, and dates, without opening the query and possibly wasting time. BTW. I am researching this family. Along with Amy Cobb, William Hall, Nellie Beardsley, and Angelina Talmadge. All of whom married into the Allen family in Ulysses and the surrounding area. I was new once myself. It's hard to not sound harsh, I hope I didn't, because when you are new to this game, and sometimes it does feel like a game, you want information so much after searching so hard, it's kind of tiring clicking on vague links that you hope will apply to your search! My husband has a son and daughter-in-law in Alaska, and my son just started dating a girl who is from there and her father drives those "big wheels" across the ice around Prudoe Bay.
