WHITE, FRANK (carpenter) age 48 Male White born PA living at Union Twp, Endicott NY Broome co per 1920; as widow, with children: Delia or Della age 20 born NJ; *Minnie age 17 born 1903 NJ; and Theodore age 12 b 1908 PA. Frank White's parents were born in NY; his wife was born in PA. Per 1910, I find a Minnie White age 42 born 1868 PA at Jersey City, Hudson County NJ with daughter, Edna White age 22 born 1898 NJ (who may have married a James Hamblin in 1918), living with the family of Marcia Bruce 35, sister-in-law, who is related to a William Bruce age 62. So, is this Minnie White the said wife of Frank White above and was her maiden name then Bruce? It fits and likely is so. Can't find 1900 census for Frank White as her husband and her - will keep looking in NJ. *Minnie White married 1920 Endicott NY to Augustus H Hawver. ----- Original Message ----- From: nytompki-request@rootsweb.com To: nytompki@rootsweb.com Sent: Tuesday, October 02, 2007 3:01 AM Subject: NYTOMPKI Digest, Vol 2, Issue 169 Plain digests are sent to users with all posts listed in one long email. Conant, of 4093 West Seneca Road, Trumansburg, passed away on Tuesday, September 4, 2007 at the age of 83. Born in Brooktondale, New York on June 19, 1924, Gertrude was the daughter of Glenn and Iva (Bacon) Phinney. She was employed by Cornell University for many years and enjoyed the rich history of the Ithaca area. Her membership in the DeWitt Historical Society (now the History Center) allowed Gertrude the access and an opportunity to keep history present in our current lives. Tracing heritage through genealogy, and capturing the family she cherished in photographs were favorite pastimes. The birthday calendar was followed closely so that a card could be sent, and nothing lit up Gertrude's face more than the sight of a grandchild or great-grandchild walking through the door. Gertrude was preceded in death by her husband, Harold in 1983 and her son-in-law, Harold Suess in 2007. She is survived by two daughters, Lorraine Suess of Trumansburg and Kathryn (Jazen) Valencia of Ithaca; one son, Ralph (Darlene) Conant of Largo, Florida; six grandchildren; five great-grandchildren and six nephews. The family will be present to receive friends on Friday, September 7, 2007 from 10-11 am at the Ness-Sibley Funeral Home, 23 South Street, Trumansburg. Services, at the funeral home, will begin at 11:00 am on Friday with the Rev. Ralph Selin officiating. Prayers of Committal will follow at Quick Cemetery in Brooktondale. In lieu of flowers, the family asks those who wish to remember Gertrude in the form of a contribution to kindly consider the History Center, 401 E. State Street, Ithaca, NY 14850. I appreciate the Bible pages you sent me, but they are very hard to read. Have you been able to transcribed the information? This is the information I have on Lydia Bates. I have a copy of a family group sheet based on a letter sent to Jerry Devol by Jack E. Nida, 1315 Haines Avenue, Columbus, Ohio on April 10, 1932 which says, "The following information was obtained from a fly-leaf of a bible, which was supposed to have been the Gardner Family Bible. I obtained the fly-leaf (which had been torn out) from my aunt, Mayme (Campbell) Mills." According to this family group sheet, Lydia was born on March 10, 1776 in VT. She married Rhodes Gardner on December 03, 1795. We do not have any collaborating record of her birth or her marriage. Rhodes was living in Ulysses, NY -- most likely in the area that was to become Ithaca. His oldest son, Daniel, was born in Ulysses in 1796. He was born on July 20, 1770 and does not show up as a head of household anywhere in the 1790 census. We do not know where he was born or anything about his parents. 1800: Rhodes Gardiner -- Ulysses, Cayuga, NY 1810: Roads Gardner -- Ulysses, Seneca, NY 1820: Rodes Gardner -- Newport, Washington, OH 1830: Rhodes Gardener -- Newport, Washington, OH 1840: Rhodes Gardner -- Concord, Delaware, OH Rhodes died in 1849. We don't know where he was buried. 1850: Lydia Gardner -- German, Clark, OH (living with son William) She appears to have been counted twice in this census. She is also listed with her daughter, Martha McKee. 1860: Lydia Gardner, age 84, born in VT -- Jackson, Hardin, OH (living with daughter, Martha McKee, age 62, tailoress, born NY and Matilda McKee, age 19, born in OH) Lydia died on July 13, 1864. We do not know where she is buried. We did not find her in the Patterson, OH cemetery with the McKees or other Gardners. I have just skimmed through your posts on other message boards and I am very interested in your speculation of possible intermarriage with the Seneca. Given that these families were on the New York State frontier so early, it is an intriguing speculation and may explain why they seem to be so isolated from other family members. I'll try one more time, (the one I got was nothing but headers) There is the Cortland Standard: http://www.cortlandstandard.net/ Decent paper for a city that size but their website is pathetic. Here are a few more from nearby larger cities that often have news of Cortland and Tompkins counties: Syracuse Post-Standard: http://www.syracuse.com/poststandard/ Rochester Democrat & Chronicle: http://www.democratandchronicle.com/apps/pbcs.dll/frontpage Elmira Star Gazette: http://www.star-gazette.com/apps/pbcs.dll/frontpage Binghamton Press & Sun-Bulletin: http://www.pressconnects.com/apps/pbcs.dll/frontpage The Ithaca Journal has a good site but they have completely succumbed to corporate greed as far as obituaries go. Not only do they charge the bereaved outlandish fees to print an obituary, they expect you to pay Legacy.com to read anything more than a year old. Have you tried your local library site? If it's fairly well wired they may have some good databases, eg Newsbank, online. I imagine you're aware of <http://www.fultonhistory.com/> which has a number of old NY papers that can be searched. Even if Ithaca isn't one of them, often news was printed from other areas, so you might get lucky. Just this last week the NY Times has returned it's archives to free status.
