The nearest typewriter company I can find is Smith-Corona in Groton. Would that have been a reasonable commute for someone who lived on South Albany Street or was there another typewriter company in Ithaca? Did National Cash Register ever make typewriters? They made typewriters until fairly recently. Groton is only a short way from Ithaca. My husband worked at NCR for 28 years, and never knew of them to make typewriters. The Ithaca NCR was the adding machine division. They later made printers, for scanners, ATM's, etc. In 1930, it was called Allen Wales, not National Cash Register. Their main & largest assembly plant & headquarters was located in South Cortland (just outside of city limits). There were also had a couple of other smaller plants located within the city limits of Cortland - one of them was located on Huntington Street. During the late 60's and early 70's (when I worked there) all of the plants were working three shifts (24-7). It was one of the biggest employers within a 60 mile radius of Cortland. People drove from anywhere up to 1- 1/2 hours one way to work there. Later (believe in early 90's) they shut the doors to SCM and moved their business to Mexico (outsourcing). Ithaca is about 30 minutes from Cortland, depending on what road a person would be driving. The major route would be Rt 13 from Ithaca to Dryden to Cortland or several alternate routes going through the "countryside", if you happened to be a "local". If you'd like more information about SCM, suggest you contact the Cortland Historical Society or the Cortland Public Library - both have an abundance of history about the company. You could also "google" Smith Corona typewriters on your search engine...there's a wealth of info available. **************Start the year off right. 3. There were actually many typewriter manufacturing operations in Tompkins county over the years. The History Center in Tompkins (Ithaca) has a great exhibit of many of them. Some of the exibit information is at the following website: Typing in Tompkins http://ergo.human.cornell.edu/ErgoPROJECTS/DEA4702005/HCTwebsite/index.html One likely company for Mr. Hoover would be Morse-Chain which had a subsidiary that manufactured the Barr portable typewriter. See http://www.geocities.com/wbd641/Barr1.html for some interesting history. -----Original Message----- From: Madeline Millard [mailto:mlm403@juno.com] Sent: Wednesday, January 09, 2008 7:59 AM To: TOMPKINS posting Subject: [NYTOMPKI] Typewriter company in Ithaca? 3. Looking for a marriage record for Francis P. Drake to Mary Ann Carpenter in Tompkins Co. around 1825-1830. Her brother William was a Baptist pastor so I think that mostly likely they might have been married in a Baptist Church. Also looking for parents and birth date of Francis b. ca 1801. Thanks for any help. Susan Scott
