According to the Historical Gazetter of Tioga County, NY (1785-1888): "The town (Spencer) was formed by an act of the legislature passed February 28, 1806, receiving its name in honor of Judge Ambrose Spencer. At this time, however, it was a town of great extent, set off from Owego (now Tioga). From this large territory have been formed the towns of Candor, Caroline, Danby and Newfield, the latter three in Tompkins county, set off February 22, 1811; and Cayuta in Schuyler county, organized March 20, 1824." Hope this helps in your search. I am seeking information on the George Washington HILL who married Elizabeth/Betsy TAYLOR. This is the family who appears on the 1855 census as living in Owego (I have found a similar, but different record for ANOTHER George Washington or Geo. W. Hill so it appears there were two of them living in this area). The one I want is per the 1855 Owego census: HILL, George W. 43 b. Scoharie NY Elizabeth 37 Steven 17 John 16 Martha 13 Harriet 10 George 8 Elizabeth A. 6 Kyman 4 Mariah 2 (Mariah b. 1853 is my husband's ancestor; she married James Swartwood in 1869 after he returned from the Civil War.) On the 1865 census I found this family: Babcock, Franklin - married 2x Elizabeth 50 - married 2x Hill, Betsy 16 "" Lyman 14 "" Maria 12 "" James W. 7 (born ca. 1858) "" Rosetta 4 (born ca. 1861) Thus, it appears that Geo. Washington Hill died between 1860-1865 and that his widow married Franklin Babcock. Her older children were out of the home, but the younger ones were living with their mother and step-father. If anyone has info on this family, please contact me or post to the Tioga Co., NY list. Many thanks. -- Helen Graves
Ezekiel Williams was born c. 1755 in prob Upper Smithfield, PA. His christening dated 23 March 1755 is found in the Ref Dutch Church of Walpack, Sussex Co., NJ. However, his parents lived across the Delaware River in Upper Smithfield. His parents were John Wiliams and Leah Decker. John Williams was born in England and lived in Upper Smithfield, PA. No record of his ever being in CT. About 1783 Ezekiel Williams married Lydia WESTBROOK, dau of Benjamin Westbrook and Catherine Westbrook (yes, her maiden name was Westbrook). I have found only 2 children for Ezekiel Williams and Lydia Westbrook. Both were daughters: 1. Catherine born ca 1785 who married ca 1803-1804 Benjamin Swartwood,Sr. 2. Leah/Lea born 20 May 1788; chr 27 Oct 1788 while the family lived in Wyoming Valley, Luzerne Co., PA. The chr record is listed in the records of the Machackemack Red Dutch Church, Deer Park, Port Jervis, Orange Co., NY. (The minister of the church went on a visit to Wyoming Valley in the fall of 1788 and christened several children while he was there. Leah was one of the children. Since Catherine was not chr at the same time as her sister, I believe she was chr shortly after birth ca 1785 somewhere else. 1790 census Ezekiel Williams, wife, and 2 females are living in Exeter, Luzerne Co., PA. There are many Williams families there, but they were from CT. At some time between 1790-1800, Ezekiel Williams moved to Tioga Co., NY, and settled in the Halsey Valley. According to probate records in Tioga Co., NY, there is no will for Ezekiel Williams but there is an inventory dated March 1803 which indicated he died by then. I am seeking further information on this family. What happened to Ezekiel's widow Lydia? If alive when her husband died in 1803, she would be only about 46 years old. Did she remarry or did she remain a widow? If she was alive, she was left with 2 daughters. Catherine would be about 18 years old when her father died. Leah would be about 15 years old. Catherine did marry Benjamin SWARTWOOD ca 1803-1804 based upon births of their children. Did Leah Williams marry 1805-1810? Note: I have found no connection between my Ezekiel Williams b. 1755 in PA, son of John, school master from England, to the many Williams families in Luzerne Co PA and Tioga Co. NY who were from CT. If anyone has any information on Ezekiel Williams, his widow, or two daughters, pls contact me or post to the Tioga Co., NY, list. If anyone has access to the 1810 Tioga Co. census, would you pls look to see if Lydia Williams is on it. Many thanks. -- Helen Graves

NY Queries Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/NY/Tioga/10228 Surname: BERRY, ALLEN, ELLIOTT, CLEVELAND ------------------------- I am searching for information on the family of John S. and Elvira (Allen) Berry who lived for a spell in Tompkins County, NY during the early 1800s. They migrated through Tioga County, NY in the 1830's. John S. BERRY was born 1806 in Guildhall, Essex, Vermont, married Elvira ALLEN about 1828 in Virgil, Cortland, NY and died about 1842 near Berrytown, Bradford, PA. John is the son of John S. BERRY and Elizabeth ELLIOTT. Elvira ALLEN was born about 1808 in NY and died after 1880. Elvira is reportedly a relative of Ethan Allen but the relationship has not yet been established. John and Elvira (Allen) Berry settled for a short time in Dryden, Tompkins, NY before moving through Tioga County, NY to the Berrytown Settlement in Bradford County, Pennsylvania. Their first male child, Cevilius Stocking BERRY, was born in Dryden 12 December 1832. John and Elvira (Allen) Berry may have been migrating with a larger family group consisting of the families of John S. and Elizabeth (Elliott) Berry and Ephraim and Polly (Cleveland) Berry. Reportedly, some of the Berry family settled near Richford, Tioga, NY. Any information on the aforementioned families of Berry, Allen, Cleveland and Elliott would be much appreciated. The children of John S. and Elizabeth (Elliott) Berry are reported to be: James, Alvin, Esther, Benjamin, John, Eliza, Luther, Joseph, Lydia, Amanda, and Clara.
