    1. [NYTIOGA] CONKLIN
    2. Date: 15 Jul 2001 15:33:36 -0600 From: aamath@rea-alp.com To: NYTIOGA-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [NYTIOGA] CHARLES HAMILTON CONKLIN, b. 1832 Owego, m. Julia A LaMonte Owego, father was Thomas Conklin I am trying to find information on the father of Thomas Conklin. Thomas was born 1 Aug 1787, NY, died 18 March 1851, buried in the Mercereau, Cemetery, Owego twp. Thomas Conklin's wife was supposedly Hannah Elliot, born 15 Oct 1793, died 19 Aug 1860 Owego, also buried in Mercereau Cemetery. I have been told that the father of Thomas was John Conklin, whose wife was Rachel. That is all of the information I have on Thomas Conklin's parents. Does anyone have information on this Conklin line? I would appreciate any information that you would share with me. Thank you!>>>>>>>>>>>> ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---------------------------------------------- Thomas and Hannah had a daughter, Caroline, who married Ira Puffer Jr. Ira and Caroline moved on in 1865 to Wisconsin. By 1870 they had settled in Appleton, Wisc. I do not know if any of Caroline's family followed. Ira lost his right arm below the elbow in a threshing accident in Owego. Charles gave affidavit to this to the War Dept., so that Caroline could collect her mother's pension from son, John who was captured and died as a result of the Civil War. I am a Puffer family genealogist, and one Puffer cousin who descended from Ira and Caroline is on line. If you are a Conklin, you would be related to him also. I can give you his e-mail address, though I am not sure how much he can help you as he is really not a researcher at this point. Warm Regards, June L. Beckwith

    2. Ed & Carol Kessner
    3. Would anyone have information on Russel Winship born 1804 in or near Tioga Co.? I am at a brick wall. Would there be any records that would show who his parent's were? Were there siblings? He married Anna Maria VanHouten and lived in Owego until 1858 when they moved to Delaware Ohio area. The first son John Park Winship died at nine years old supposedly killed by a horse. Would there be a newspaper article about John Park Winship? I cannot locate were he is buried. Would you have any suggestions for finding records? Perhaps he used another name besides Russel? 1. [NYTIOGA] Query on Diners/Lunch Wagons
    2. mike engle
    3. Hello, I am doing research on Diners and Lunch Wagons. My general coverage area is upstate New York, but I would be interested in hear about any stories relating to diners from anywhere. I am looking for any information concerning diners of the past or the present. This would include stories from former customers, former owners, pictures or any other recollections. It is always great to place a diner with a family and/or with some of its customers, as this is what a diner is really about. So if your family used to own a diner or lunch wagon, you know of people who did, or you went to a diner as a kid in your hometown, I would love to hear from you. 1. [NYTIOGA] Re: Granger Family of Waverly
    2. Thank you for your reply. Your Greatgrandmother would be my Mother-in-law's Aunt Anna. Would you possibly have any family photos of the Granger family from the days when your GreatGrandmother and her brothers and sisters lived at home in North Towanda? We are hoping to find an existing picture of Elijah and Laura and their children. It's a big family, but these websites really do work to put families in touch! All the best from Tennessee, Deed Eddy

    2. My great grandmother, Anna K. Granger Dunphy of Towanda was a sister of Burton. I grew up in Waverly, however did not know either Burton or Horace's families. I did know an Alma Granger Arnold who lived in Burdett, NY in the mid 1960s. She was a niece of both and had contact with them. My Granger genealogy info on Burton and Grace does not go beyond their children. Perhaps if you can find Alma, she can be of help. Mary K. Nicholson

    1. [NYTIOGA] Joseph & Sophia (Cotton) Day Family - NY & IA
    2. There is a lovely photo of the Joseph and Sophia Day family on pg. 174 of the Jan-Feb 1988 issue of Everton's Genealogical Helper" magazine. Joseph Day (1819-1919), was the son of Elias B. Day and Maria Worms of Tioga Co. NY. Sophia (1833-1919) as the daughter of Garrett L. Cotton and Louisa Root of Onondaga Co. NY. Pictured are their grown children who were all born in Sabula, Jackson Co., IA: Lula born 1859, Charles, born 1864, and Sophia, born 1872. The family photograph was shared by a Janesville, IA researcher; Sophia Cotton Day was her husband's 2nd great aunt. Hopefully, this "snippet" of information will serendipitously provide "just the right clue" for a Day researcher. For further details, please reference that issue.

    2. Hi Philip, There are only two Barto families in the Tioga area. I havent' been able to time mine into the Francis Barteau line yet but am still trying. My line starts with Simeon Barto 1816 to 1872, he has seven children. 4 sons, 3 daughters. One of the sons dies in the Civil War. Please share what you know about your grand parents, great grandparents and on. Pamela Denton

    1. [NYTIOGA] Millers from Tioga County, Circa 1790-1820
    2. Stephen Carlile
    3. I believe my Miller family came from New York and the Tioga County area and I am trying to track them down. I am hoping someone has already worked on Millers in the Tioga area as it appears there were two Hugh Miller families living there in 1800 and 1810. I located my oldest Miller ancestor, Hugh Miller, on the 1820 Federal Census in Clark County, Illinois, enumerated next to Hugh Miller, Jr. his son. In the 1850 Clark Co., Census, Hugh Miller is listed as 60 and born in New York, as is his wife Mary. There are several other Millers, probably Hugh's sons, listed on the same census page with Hugh in 1850. I am assuming that by 1850 Hugh Miller Sr. is deceased and the Hugh Miller listed in 1850 is the Hugh Miller listed as a Jr. in 1820. In any event, the Hugh Miller listed in 1850 would have been born about 1790 in New York. I am told that in the 1800 New York Census Index there is a Hugh Miller listed with two males between the age of 0-10 and two females between the ages of 0-10, which would fit in with my Hugh Miller family. There is a second Hugh Miller listed with 2 males between 0-10, 1 female between 0-10 and one female between 10-16. both of these Hugh Millers are listed in Tioga County. There is one Hugh Miller listed in the 1810 census in Tioga County and none in 1820. I strongly suspect that one of the Hugh Miller families in Tioga county are my family. I also believe that Hugh Miller senior was married to an Emma Barr, and that one of their other boys was named William C. Miller (who also is living in Clark Co., Illinois in 1850). Some of the Millers may have moved to Pennsylvania, but I believe the families finally ended up in Clark Co., Illinois for about three or four decades. There may be a connection between my Miller family and the John Miller listed as a state assemblyman from Tioga during the period 1804 - 1807. If anyone has any information on the Millers, Barrs, or a Ketchum surname from Tioga County, I would appreciate your contacting me. let me know.
