    1. [NYTIOGA] Civil War Soldier Search - Chauncy Perry
    2. Alice M Brook
    3. I have the military file for my gg Grandfather, Chancy/Channy Perry. He served in 137th Regiment, Co. I, New York Volunteers, from August of 1862 until he was wounded at the battle of Wauhatchee (Tennessee) on October 29, 1863. He later died of his injuries while completing the paperwork for a pension. He died on 1 January 1867 in New York, possibly in Candor or Caroline, Tioga or Tompkins County. To date, I have found no burial site. His wife and two children had been sent ahead to Iowa to claim land in Wright County. The Pension File is quite complete and has wonderful documentation on marriage, children, etc. However, I cannot locate any records of where Chancy was buried. He is not listed as a Civil War Veteren in any of the Tioga or Tompkins County records that I have located. Any suggestions for assistance??? Thanks! Alice Brook Nevada

What's amusing is that I live so far out in the wilds of Texas that the nearest library is one we just opened last October, this hamlet never had one before. A close cousin who found me online back when I first made Dumb Posts, who lives in MI, and I will meet there and take off for NY together! There is a little library the next county over, though, that has a surprisingly smart collection; they may just have it for me to read. I had asked her, since only one sibling of 5 left NY after the civil war, and the one who died left a wife and children in NY, well that meant that 80% of "us" were still in NY. She didn't know anyone, but made a couple of smart choice phone calls and whoa, do we have relatives! 400% more cousins to meet!

It looks like William Henry chapman d. 1838, which explains why Electa ayres Chapman only had 2 kids, 1836 and 1838, and was living with her parents by 1840 and in 1850 as well--not clear when they went to Wisconsin, but in time for Lucy (as per census in NY--Elvira L in census in WI, but I always knew it was Lucy or Louisa) to marry by 1859 to Eli Bond Chapman. Only thing I can't figure out is bit from your original message re Jed's mother Amanda Denison m. Eleazer Hedges--does this mean she was m. to ?? Chapman who d. and then she re-married? I can't find any record of Amanda marriage to anyone in Saybrook prior to 1800, but I did find a Deacon William Chapman from Saybrook, Rev War vet who could conceivably have been dad if died 1881-end of war in 1883. Can you check that page again re these as names of Jed/Content kids, more or less in this order? Henry, Edward N, Albert, William H, Horace, George M, NC, Noyse/Noyes, Lyman and poss Ester and Lucy Elvira? Many thanks--

Darned old early censuses only gave heads of households. Could you identify which Richard that is from http://freepages.books.rootsweb.com/~teking/Weygant/ and maybe an idea when he was around? I've narrowed it some, I think, to #306, 370, 1680 that could have been around in the right time slot to have left a HILL daughter in this geographical area before at least 1780ish. I had 'found' one Richard reading early Tioga County censuses but still don't know which; also a Daniel. They'd be somewhat contemporaries of twins Caleb and Nathaniel. The #75 Capt. Richard (their uncle?) died 1745. During the latter half of 1700s probably a lot of Sacketts passed through! I'm wondering if you could suggest a source for Gay's Historical Gazetteer of Tioga Co? It is a long day's trip for me to a city library that even *might* have that publication.

    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: HILL SACKETT SHOEMAKER SILL DENISON McDOWELL Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/3RB.2ACE/339 Message Board Post: I need to find a HILL lass who would have birthed [William] Sackett HILL right about 1799-1800 - and a father to match. There is some suggestion of at least one sibling to Sackett named Samuel [HILL?] b ~1821. That 21 year spread suggests that either Sackett was an early-born to a young mother or that the father later remarried, making them half-brothers. Now let's move to about 1824 and Chemung County, where I think Sackett married Elizabeth SHOEMAKER and settled into farming, at Erin I think, and making little HILLs. 25 acres at Van Etten is what he left to their five children in his 1875 will. For more probable clues to family, here are the birth names in order. Thomas - suggests that could have been Sackett's father's name. Andrew is next. Shoemaker HILL third, for Elizabeth's surname. Eliza fourth, and last is John. That suggests possible family given names: Andrew Samuel Thomas William John HILL, whose lifetimes would have been 1700s into earlyish 1800s. Sackett and Elizabeth are buried at WESTBROOK cemetery at Van Etten. As best we can tell so far, Sackett was NY-born. Elizabeth SHOEMAKER is as much a mystery, but my best guess so far, given that it's passed down she was born in PA ~1803ish, she might well be Elizabeth S (SILL?) SHOEMAKER from the Forty Fort/Wilkes-Barre, Luzerne Co. pennamite wars PA Col. Elijah SHOEMAKER [son of Elijah + Jane McDOWELL] + Elizabeth SILL DENISON batch of kids.

    1. [NYTIOGA] Cemetery Confusion!
    2. Hello All-- I'm very confused over this Straits Corners Cemetery thing. Everyone (my mother included) is saying it is called "Chapel Hill". Yet, when I go to cemeteries listed on Tioga county at rootsweb, there are people not listed that I know for a fact should be there-- i.e. my great grandparents--Robert B. & Harriet D. Davenport Van Luven, my great uncle & wife-- Timothy & Pearl Golden Van Luven, a family friend--Joseph Czerneicki, among others. Does anybody know why these people were eliminated from rootsweb list? Thanks to all that responded to my previous query!!!
