Hello List In New York State Death certificates can be found in two places . The Town in which the person died and after 1890 in Albany New York. New York state documents before 1889 are very scarce. I have had the best luck with calling the Town Clerk in the community in which the deceased lived and asking the Clerk if the person's record is there. Give her the complete name , complete date or as much information as you have . If I have the place of burial too I seem to get the more cooperation . If I call with just a name , I may be wrong, Probably not, the clerk will be gone for a minute and come back with nothing found. If they have the certificate I thank them and ask for their address and fee for a copy. Always thank the person and send ,at the very least a thank you card, some people give a box of candy. Be very polite .. you may have to ask them for more help later I have not had any luck at Albany .. they sent my money back both times I sent for Death certificates.. To send to Albany you must print out a request form which can be found at the New York State Health department site on line. You must mark your request as " for genealogical use". The cost for records is 11 dollars. Linda

I'm 99 percent sure that I have found some of my relatives in the marvelous listing of St. James Cemetery graves at the Tioga County website. Unfortunately, my John E. KANE graves (there were two John E. Kanes) list only years of death. I'd like to obtain a death certificate for John E. Sr. Is there a cemetery office where I might get an accurate date of death? Or do you think I could still get a copy of the death certificate listing only the year 1917? And while I'm on the subject, where in Tioga Co. can I write for a death certificate? Thanks for your help! Ellen Kane Bugs Papillion, Nebraska

Hello all, Does anyone know what newspapers were available in the Richford/Berkshire area in the early 1900's? I have a clipping that tells of the death of one of my great grandmother's, Jessie (Negus) Hamilton, children - family history has it that it was a boy that died as a result of burns, but the article says that the child was a girl, and that she caught her clothes on fire accidently. No age was given, but this child does not show up in the 1900 census records, and was probably born about 1892/93. There was no newspaper name on the clipping, nor date. :( Any help is appreciated!
