breakthrough came because a second cousin wrote to say she'd found grgrgrandma Melissa Pier's tombstone in Corning, NY, just where I thought she must be. And she sent an obit at well. The obit said she'd been living w grandson Erastus S. Pier in Knoxville. My cousin had asked the historian who told her it was just over the PA border. But I looked in French's 1864 Gazetteer which said there was a tiny village just "opposite Corning." But the PA mention made me remember I'd found on a PA County list (which is actually not far) a death notice for a 7yr old Harriet Pier (Harriet is an often repeated name in my family), dau of Erastus P. Pier. Well, in looking thru the email in the Pier folder (boy, am I glad I print them out and keep them!) I found I'd written a note in 1998 to the author of the Pier book, and I said: "I'm really curious about the mention of Harriet Stevens who m George Stewart (your book p 214) and resided in Waverly in 1885 with a daughter." Well, in 1998, I knew nothing more about Harriet Stewart. But one of the first things I did 2 yrs ago with the 1880 Census CDs was to put in a search for Harriet Stewart, found her with Eleanor Philips in Barton, Tioga County. And by then I knew she had a dau. Eleanor. Checked the county web site, which had an 18878 Tioga Gazeteer for Barton OUTSIDE WAVERLY. There was Harriet, widow of George H. Stewart!! So now I saw Waverly in that old email message! Bingo! Rockets! Explosions! And talk about connections within connections Her father was Oliver Stevens who came to Pierstown with his broinlaw, Solomon Pier. And later came the other Pier brothers, including my Abner who had married Oliver's sister Lucy! Sheesh. What a day!

But I can tell you that Edna Davenport was a very good friend of my grandmother, Metalill Westervelt, who did indeed grow up in Spencer, NY. According to my grandmother's wedding write up in the local paper at the time (The Spencer Needle) Edna played the piano at my grandparent's wedding in 1909. I also have a postcard type picture of Edna that she must have given to my grandmother at some point. I do seem to remember from old Spencer Needles that your Edna Davenport married a guy by the last name of Tyler----I think his first name was Leslie, but I'm not sure. My grandparents married in 1909, and I think Edna and her Tyler husband married within a year or two of that. Once last year, when I was visiting the cemetery, I also stumbled across (not literally) Edna's grave in the Evergreen Cem. in Spencer. Seems to me she didn't live all that long if I recall the stone correctly---I took notice of it bec! ause I knew she and my grandma had been good friends in their youth. I believe Edna died in her 30s, but I can always check the stone for you to be certain. You can e-mail me privately if you want at rarnold261@aol.com
Hi All, If your mailbox is full and mail can not be delivered to you, your mail gets lost forever. There is no longer any place to put it till you get around to opening your mail. Another problem is when your ISP goes down like HOTMAIL is not deliverable, I get notice that the mailing list will not try to resend it and that mail is lost. If your ISP is a good one and never goes down and your mail box is kept from overflowing, all mail from this list and anyone else will get to you. Many believe their mailbox will never block new mail and it will always be waiting for them. That isn't correct. I get the notices for this mailing list that lets me know when the mail cannot be delivered and there is a lot of it. I can only wonder about what other more important mail may be getting lost for that same person, hence this note. Ernie CC NYTIOGA-L mailing list
Might any kind person on this list be able to find out for me if there was an obit for my gg grandfather, Henry ARMSTRONG, who died in Owego, Tioga Co., NY, on 18 Apr 1878. If there is an obit for him, please pray that his parents' names are on it. I've been trying to pin down this guy for 20 years now, and although I have the family down to the present day, I canNOT get him back across that big pond. I think that his father's given name was Benjamin, but that's more hunch than anything. If anyone out there can find this info, I'll be eternally grateful, believe me! These Irishmen and Scottish men are just too doggone stubborn!! I may wind up having to wait until we meet up, and then there'll be a lot of finger-wagging going on, I guarantee that much! Thanks a lot for listening to my ranting! Barbara in MO (but originally from NYC)

Now this is what I have been told as far as obit's and stuff goes. I am going to give an example. Let say the person died in Candor, NY 13743, You could do the following. 1. Contact the Library. I do have the number. 2. Contact your library if your town has one. Ask them to do an inner library request. From what I have been told, a person can go to their home town library, an ask them to do a inner library microfish or microfilm request. ( only thought that it could be done with in the fingerlkes library system but found out differently.) Now in order to read the microfish or microfilm requested, the library that makes the request should have a reader for it. 3. If I also understand this right, it is a law in NY state and I think all over, that states that when a death happens that the library in the community of where it happened and or where the person was buried is supposed to have all the records as far as an obit goes. Especially if there is a news paper involved. 4. For example if the death occurred in Candor, and I know that Candor doesn't have a news paper any more. But there is one put out by the Finger Lakes community out of Trumansburg, NY, (I think I can find out the exact name from a friend of mine back home in Candor if your interested) An there is also the Ithaca Journal that prints obits from towns like, Spencer, VanEtten, Candor, Owego, Catatonk, Willesyville.. But this would be for later stuff in the middle to late 1900's and beginning of the 21st century. But the Journal in Ithaca would have a lot of information as well as Cornell university Library. You could contact them as well. Just go on line and inter Ithaca, NY Library at Cornell. I think that is how to access it. You might have to fiddle around a bit with it. Also you might be able to find it if you knew where the person who died lived. There was a paper in Spencer called the Spencer Needle. I don't know if it is still running or not. Like I said before it all depends as to when and where your person that you searched for lived and died. Your library is your best bet and I would do that first. That way, you find out from them more about the inner library loan program. Another posibility might be the Morman Research Center if you have one in your local area. They are so helpful. I hope this has given you some ideas as to what is available. Let me know if I can answer any more questions. Joan

Surnames: Card Ailport Hill Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/3RB.2ACE/436 Message Board Post: My great grandfather Alonzo Card was born and raised in Owego, Tioga county. All the online genealogies state that he married a Mary A. ? abt 1871-1872 in NY and had four children there before moving to Michigan. In the 1880 census of Mecosta county Michigan, an Alonzo Card and family (Mary A., children - Minnie, Maggie, Martha and John) are found stating all were born in NY.) If this Alonzo is my great grandfather then there is a problem. He also appears in the 1880 Decatur, Macon county Illinois census as single and without children. I also have his marriage document from St. Patricks Catholic church of Decatur in 1885 showing he married a Mary Hill on 13 January 1885. The 1900 Decatur, Macon county Illinois census has he and Mary claiming to be married for 20 years (circa 1880) and that their son, John was born in 1882. My grandfather told the story that he ran away from home when he was nine because he didn't like his stepmom Mary Hill. Of course, if my grandfather John ! is the son of the first Mary A. Card, then he would have been nine in 1885, about the time Alonzo and Mary Hill married. I need to find documentation of this first marriage to see if the Alonzo Card who married Mary A.? is actually the son of George H. Card and Lydia M. Ailport, my g. g. grandparents.
