Hannah Jones/Joons/Johns stood as Godmother to the children of MATTHEUS Brinck and Abigail Bell as they did for her children with Benjamin Quick. My previous post to you this morning named Abigail's husband as George. This is incorrect. I hope it hasn't caused anyone any inconvenience. It was the middle of the night...and I was writing in my sleep! Georgia
Roger, Looking for the parents of Mary Jones who married Francis King and Tabitha Jones who married James Banfield has lead to the following information: George Brinck married Syntea Walker. They had a son Solomon. Solomon Middaugh married Catherine Walker. Richard Walker married Rhody Wintermute. Levi Middaugh and Catherine Walker may have been the godparents to Levi Westfall, s/o Benjamin Westfall and Shelota Middaugh. (Dutch practice is to have near relatives of the parents serve as godparents). Hannah Joons married Benjamin Quick. Hannah Joons stood as godmother to one of the children (and more) of George Brink and Abigail Bell. I think Hannah Joons is sister to John Jones father of our Tabitha and Mary. Saertje Joons married Martinus Dewitt. I think she may be the sister of Hannah and John. (I think they may be the children of Moses) Sussex County will abstract: JONES, William of Wantage. 685S - W. 2 Nov 1796; Filed 12 Dec 1796. Wife: Hannah, 'a poor infirm woman and is not likely ever to recover her health'. Son: William JONES, Jr. Executor: William YOUNG. Witnesses: Jacob DEWITT and Elizabeth CRANE. WESTFALL, David of Wantage. 1036S - W. 2 Jan 1804; Filed 24 Feb 1804. Wife: Pheby. Son: Simeon. Daughters: (3) Margaret, Anna and Talicha (sic)*. Executors: Wife, Pheby and son, Simeon WESTFALL. Witnesses: John MIDDAUGH, William YOUNG and Benjamin MIDDAUGH. *this could easily be Tabitha. Samuel Dewitt and Mary Yung had a son William, a daughter Mary, a son William Drake. Joseph Drake married Elizabeth Jones. Shelota and Phebe Middaugh, the daughters of Benjamin Middaugh and Catherine Young, married brothers. Phebe married David Westfall. Shelota married Benjamin Westfall. They were the sons of Johannes Westvael and Margareta Quick. The NJ Militia List of 1793, page 297 (I gave it to you a few years ago) has in column two, Solomon Meadow (Middaugh) living next door to or with, Richard Walker. Going down in the column, beginning with Spence Elston, there is then Peter, Jonathan and Phillip Wintermute...then William Elston...then James Banfield followed directly by Samuel and Jacob Dewitt. Next is Jno. Bonnel, Peter Vangorder, Benjamin Meadow, Bodowin Decker, David Westfall, France King, Ephraim Meadow followed by Moses Jones, William Jones and Benjamin Westfall. The 1793 militia list was a census taken household by household. There is no telling how the household groupings existed, but it is fairly certain that not each of these men was head of household in separate dwellings. On the same page in the 1800 Federal Census for Cayuga County can be found beginning with Hannah Green, Francis King, Abraham Johnson, John Jones, Malcolm Fleming, Stephen Graves, Moses Jones, Isaac Walker, Benjamin Quick and James Banfield. The following page, has among others, John Brink, Benjamin Casterline, and Stephen Casterline. The 1810 census for Seneca County has the following: William Walker followed by Benjamin Casterline, Stephen Casterline, James Bates, Solomon Middaugh, Simon Quick, Abraham Quick, ...two Coddingtons...Joseph Bates...8 heads of household...Benjamin Quick, Jacob Quick, Frances King and John King. Edward Banfield is on the next page. Please keep in mind the changing county boundaries. King Cemetery has the following burials: Banfield, Barpo, Bates, Casterline, Elston, Jones, King, Puffer and Kukyendall, among others. I think that almost everyone in King's Cemetery in Ithaca is related in one way or another. The children of Moses Jones are closely related to the Roe family (through guardianship and then marriage). If you trace the Roe family you will end up back in Long Island where you will find a Tabitha Jones who married Isaac Norton. They were the parents of Tabitha Norton who married William Jayne. They were the parents of David Jayne who married Elizabeth Dewitt. (it's a stretch). The Jayne and Roe family intermarried. The Barpo family had Bates descendants (see King's Cemetery, 1800 and 1810 census) The Moses Jones descendants married into the Roe family. It is my opinion that Moses Barpo and Anny sold all their property before his decease and that is why I cannot find a will or probate papers. I think it is important to keep in mind that Barpo could have been almost anything including VanBarpo. I believe there is a Ryerson, Berry, Mandeville connection with the Barpo family. ***Peter BERRY (Pieter BERRE) of the County of Morris, and James BURJOO (Jacobus BARGUE) of the County of Bergiin*, yeomen... [bound to]... Jonathan BELCHER, Governor... 500 pounds... 15 June 1751 ... Peter BERRY... obtained license of marriage for himself and for Susanna JONES, spinster... [w] Gabriel OGDEN. James Bargue is named as cousin in Luke Ryersen's will. It's just a thought. It seems obvious to me that the NJ families found on the militia list are all intermarried, all attended the Clove Valley DRC (except James Banfield who is found in the Wantage First Baptist Church together with a man named Caleb Jones). Caleb Jones is another interesting side trip into coincidence...A Caleb Jones married Mary FitzRandolph and they had a daughter Tabitha Jones (same era). I cannot connect the Caleb Jones family with John, Moses, Mary and Tabitha. He was the son of Edward Jones and that family appears to be English. Conclusions: Our Jones family are probably Dutch and their names could have been spelled at various times, Jones, Joons, Janes, Jans, Jansen and possibly Young. Agnes Jones may have been Anietje. My "current" theory is that we have a father Moses who had children, Moses, John, Saertje, Hannah, William and possibly others. They all belonged to the Dutch Reformed Church and came from the Minisink area (NY, PA, NJ border area). The connections in which I am most interested at this time are that of George Brink, Annette Bel(l) and Hannah Joons (Jones) and her husband Benjamin Quick; Solomon Middaugh and his wife Catherine Walker; Moses Jones and Elizabeth VanSickle (her family). I cannot identify Annette Bell nor Elizabeth VanSickle's parents. In years of searching I have never found a Barto connection (in response to your earlier posting) There is a Jones-VanKleeck connection. I have a will in my files and would need to check it to give you accurate information. This is a "brief" summary of the research surrounding the Jones family for which I have searched for years. If you, or anyone else has opinions or ideas for research on these families, I would be very grateful. I have pension files, wills, deeds, family notes, published genealogies on the Brinck and Quick families, have made two visits to Ithaca, and still no answers. I'm not certain that this is of interest to anyone but Roger and me, but just in case, I thought I would post it to the lists hoping an answer might come in the middle of the night. Regards, Georgia Whitson
