I can find no Henry in all > the LI Smith's who fits the profile. > > Would there be land records in Southold for early 1700's?? > Might the name be HOWELL? Plenty of those. The Salmon Records, a record of marriages and death in Southold and vicinity kept by the Salmon family, lists several Howell marriages in the time frame you mention; one is Hezekiah Howel to Widow Mary Smith 30 Jan. 1733/34. I don't see a Charles Howell. Also has death of Widow Neling [sic] at Shelter Island 16 Feb. 1727/28 and marriage of Elisha Merow and Mary Nolin [sic] 14 June 172? [prob. 1722, poss. 1723]. This record is available on FHC microfilm 1033619 and in print form in the NYGB Record in 8 installments, 1916-1918. For Southold Land records, see Southold Town Records, 2 vol. (1882), on FHC film 0896629, also published in print form, probably by NYGB, but I don't have that data. I have the index here at home and I see a number of Howells but no Charles. Smiths were more numerous in western Suffolk County, around Smithtown, naturally, but elsewhere. Russell K. Brown
