Thanks to Eileen, I now have the 1840 location of my ancestor Gideon Mills b. 1797 NY. In the 1850 census shown here below, Gideon Mills is listed with his SECOND wife, who was Emeline Bishop. She was first marrried to a mr. MARSTEN and the children with her names Sarah, James, and Lois were from her first marriage. Her husband died, and she remarried to Gideon Mills. I feel that Gideon's first wife died also, but I do not know where, or when, but probably prior to the 1840 census, since I feel that the 1840 census listing is for Emeline Bishop Mills, his second wife. The life of Gideon Mills in Fulton Co IL, where he died in 1870, is fairly well detailed by me, but what I LACK is any information about WHAT Mills family he belongs to In New York. I know the there was a very big and historic MILLS family in SMITHTOWN and in MILL POND , New York. I am asking for help with those 2 specific MILLS family lines, to see if any other researcher might see a way to fit me into either of those 2 well researched family lines. They seem to be the 2 obvious choices. Can anyone help me? For example: Gideon Smith Mills b. 1788 Mill Pond, Suffolk Co NY. Does this man relate to my ancestor Gideon Mills b. 1797 NY? Or pure coincidence? I am also needing help to find Gideon Mills in the 1830 census, he should be 31 years old, and married, and with a few kids. My ancestor was William Mills b. about 1827-1833,based on various census records. I have made a list of every man named MILLS who was from NY who settled in Fulton Co IL at an early date, along with Gideon Mills, be glad to share that with any Mills researchers. Perhaps I can get you back just a bit more, Lilly. Gideon MILLS and his wife, Mary ACKERLY are my 1C4R. My connection is through Mary's parents, John and Deborah (SMITH) ACKERLY. Deborah, b. 1786, was one of 12 ch. b. to my GGGG Grandfather, Simeon and Hannah (SMITH) SMITH. Gideon appears in the 1820 Smithtown, Suffolk county, NY census, at which time he and his wife were between 25 and 44 years old. This would place his birth year not later than 1795. However in the 1830 census for Suffolk county, NY. Gideon is not listed, suggesting he left the area prior to that date. (I did not find him in the 1830 Franklin county, IL census.) In the 1830 Smithtown census other MILLS who are listed include Epenetus, Jonas, Zopher, Apollas and John. Epenetus appears to be a brother of Gideon. There is a MILLS genealogy at <http://www.longislandgenealogy.com/mills/surnames.htm> and another at <http://geocities.com/millsancestry/m202.htm>. Assuming for the moment that Gideon was descended from George, I clicked on the link <http://www.geocities.com/millsancestry/9/index.htm>. I then clicked on "Name Index", scrolled down to "Mills" and clicked on Gideon Smith MILLS, b. 1788 (entry #279), son of Jonas MILLS. I then checked the entry for Jonas (1753-1811) indicating that Jonas should show in the 1790 census. I did find Jonas listed in the both the 1790 and 1800 census'. The absence of another Gideon in any of these census' leads me to believe that there was only one Gideon. So in that case, the question is what year was he born? If he had been born in 1797, and was a son of Jonas, in the 1800 census Jonas would have shown a male under 10, but there are no males under 10 shown. This is consistent with his age bracket (25-44) and possible birth year (not later than 1795) from the 1820 census record. My conclusion, based principally on deduction, is that Gideon was born in 1788, or possibly 1789, and that the 1799 date is in error. That being the case, the MILLS genealogies I cite above indicate his ancestors and line of descent as Gideon^6, Jonas^5, Jonas^4, Timothy^3, Jonathan^2, George^1. I hope this is helpful. Incidentally, I have a record that we communicated in 2004 about this same subject, but now I have more resources available.
