It's not a large area and the good thing is that there is only one or two "local" papers... Of course, then there is Newsday but most locals didn't put obits in Newsday, they used the local papers instead. I believe one of the papers is the Moriches Bay Tide.... (It's been awhile). The local library can probably help you out with the names of the papers. You might also consider looking for articles related to the graduation from the local high school, William Floyd H.S. Though, some people did attend the Catholic High School (I believe that was located in Riverhead??). You might also contact the library at the H.S. They might also have yearbooks that you could access. My dad and his siblings graduated during the period you are interested in, so you should be able to get access to what you need. Another good pointer is that most of the people probably used the local funeral homes, and there aren't too many. You might get some information via that route. Try googling for funeral homes in the Shirley / Mastic / Mastic Beach area. If he was Catholic (like most people in the area) you could also try the local churches. Most folks probably attended St. Judes in Mastic Beach; but some travelled a little way to Center Moriches to attend St. Johns. Also look into the Knights of Columbus and similar organizations.
