    1. Searching for Mary E Carman
    2. On 9/28/05 (7:55:49 PM MDT), in a relayed posting to NYSUFFOL-L@rootsweb.com, Lynn Wangeloff (MAMABEARLKJ@peoplepc.com) asked, "Searchng for a death notice of Mary E Carman: Born November 22 1955, died June-August of 1970 in Wyandanch NY Parents: Schuler E Carman and Harriet Carman, or could be Harriet DeVine" For questions such as yours, you may want to contact the Wyandanch Public Library (the library can suggest which local newspaper might have this information and other possible sources of information): Wyandanch Public Library 14 South 20th Street Wyandanch, NY 11798 Tel: 631/643-4848 Fax: 631/???-???? eMail: wyanlib@suffolk.lib.ny.us http://www.suffolk.lib.ny.us/libraries/wyan/ The pertinent geography: Wyandanch is a hamlet (an unincorporated area) in the north-central part of the Town of Babylon, in the southwest part of Suffolk County, along the Babylon/Huntington town line. There are 3 villages (municipal corporations) and 12 hamlets all or partly in the Town of Babylon. There are no cities and 10 towns in Suffolk County. There are 2 Indian reservations in Suffolk County. (I'm including after my name a NYS Geographic Glossary with the NYS definitions of county, city, town, village, hamlet and postal zone.) Beginning on the north and moving in a clockwise direction, the Hamlet of Wyandanch in the Town of Babylon is bordered on the north by the Hamlet of Melville in the Town of Huntington (the Babylon/Huntington town line) and the Hamlet of Wheatley Heights; on the east by the Hamlet of Deer Park; on the south by the Hamlet of West Babylon; and, on the west by the Hamlet of East Farmingdale. And, as occurs in every one of Suffolk County's 157 communities (0 cities, 31 villages and 126 hamlets), the Hamlet of Wyandanch has a different border than does the "Wyandanch, NY 11798" postal zone (i.e., a place can have a Wyandanch mailing address and not be in Wyandanch and a place can have other than a Wyandanch mailing address and be in Wyandanch). Those places that have a "Wyandanch, NY" mailing address that are not in the Hamlet of Wyandanch are in the Hamlet of Deer Park, the Hamlet of West Babylon and in the Hamlet of Dix hills in the Town of Huntington; and, at the same time, there are places in the Hamlet of Wyandanch with a "Deer Park, NY 11729", a "Farmingdale, NY 11735" and a "Melville, NY 11747" mailing address. For those who have their copy of the 2004 or earlier edition of the LI Population Survey or have already downloaded the report from the Long Island Power Authority web site (eMail me directly if you need instructions on how to access and download the report), you'll find the Hamlet of Wyandanch in the Town of Babylon, Suffolk County on pages 14 & 18 (map) and 19 (population estimate). I hope this information is useful or, at least, interesting. L'Shannah Tovah* & Happy 5766, Walter Greenspan * L'Shannah Tovah (li-SHAH-nuh TOH-vuh; li-shah-NAH toh-VAH) Hebrew. Lit. for a good year. The common greeting during Rosh ha Shannah and the Days of Awe. This is a shortening of "L'Shannah tovah tikatev v'taihatem" (or, to women, "L'Shannah tovah tikatevi v'taihatemi"), which means, "May you be inscribed and sealed for a good year." This year, Rosh ha Shannah begins at sunset on Monday, October 3 on the civil calendar. . Cities, Towns, Villages, Hamlets and Postal Zones in New York State New York State is divided into counties. County A county is a municipal corporation, a subdivision of the state, created to perform state functions; a "regional" government. All counties are divided into cities, towns and Indian reservations. City A city is a unique governmental entity with its own special charter. Cities are not sub-divided, except into neighborhoods, which are informal geographic areas. Town A town is a municipal corporation and encompasses all territory within the state except that within cities or Indian reservations. Towns can be sub-divided into villages and hamlets. Village A village is a general purpose municipal corporation formed voluntarily by the residents of an area in one or more towns to provide themselves with municipal services. The pattern of village organization is similar to those of a city. A village is divided into neighborhoods, which are informal geographic areas. Hamlet A hamlet is an unincorporated area in one or more towns that is governed at-large by the town(s) it is in. A hamlet is divided into neighborhoods, which are informal geographic areas. Postal Zone "City" and "Town" A postal zone "City" and "Town" is an administrative district established by the U.S. Postal Service to deliver the mail. Postal zone "City" and "Town" may not (but are encouraged to) conform to municipal or community borders. Thus, postal zone location does not always determine city, village or hamlet location. Please be aware: In many areas of New York State, the problem of non-conforming postal zones leads to a situation where the majority of places have a different community name in their mailing address than the community where that place is actually located.

    3. Seek info on descendents of Joseph Hammond and his wife, Angeline(b.ca 1813 & 1820 resp. NY). Per census records, they had at least 3 children; dau Charlotte F. b.ca. 1840 NY and dau Mary E. b.ca 1841 NY and son Joseph Robert b.ca 1860 NY. On 1850-1880 census they are living at Port Jefferson. On two of the cenuses(1860 & 1870) they have Parsons children living with them which I believe were their neice and nephew on Angeline's side. They were Charlotte Parsons b.ca. 1844 NY and Thomas Parsons b.ca 1848 NY. Any info at all that I can get would be very helpful. Thank you. Eileen

She was actually their granddaughter, her parents were David Howell and Joanna Wells who would have been your Nicholas Sr.'s sister. I found much of this information about my Wells family in historical writings, marriage, birth and death records on the www.longislandgenealogy.com as well as familysearch.com, and census records. These missives would have Obadiah Wells as descended from the original William Wells who came to America.

Does anyone recognize these names or does anyone know about an early Cherry family in Coram/Suffolk County?

Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/jUB.2ACI/1075.1.1.1.2.1 Message Board Post: Hi Walter, I am afraid I'm going to have to disagree somewhat. It is not geographic illiteracy involved but the irreducible geographic ambiguity caused by New York's confusing system of nomenclature and political subdivisions- First, Newsday was quite correctly using the dictionary's first definition of "village"- "a small community" when they said "a mile west of the village." They would have been incorrect if they used upper case "a mile west of the Village", or had been speaking in a political sense, but they were speaking in a demographic sense and used lower case. The New York State Legislature has chosen to attach a certain specific meaning to "village" when used in a political sense, but they are not the French Academy and cannot dictate how the English language is used in other senses. Webster's definitions do not stop at the New York State borders. Second, there is no such thing as "the true boundaries" of a hamlet, since officially there is no such entity as a Hamlet in NY. But of course they certainly exist unofficially. If I recall correctly, you use Census "other designated area" boundaries as the boundaries for so-called hamlets. I think those are, in general, the best choice, and come closest to an unofficial community's self-perception of its boundaries, in most cases. If someone else wants to use postal boundaries instead of census boundaries (or fire district or school district for that matter) it is a judgment call, and cannot officially be either right or wrong. I know this system in New York can be terribly confusing to an outsider [and even many insiders ;-) ], and sometimes requires a very close attention to context to determine what is really meant. It is tempting to offer a clear-cut system to remove all uncertainty, but that actually distorts the reality and can lead a newcomer astray if they don't realize that names and words in records might be used in different ways. Best regards, Ned

These histories do have some interesting information but, at the same time, many do suffer from geographic illiteracy. The main geographic errors are that NEWSDAY tends to confuse postal zone borders for a community's true borders and NEWSDAY oftentimes refers to hamlets as villages. Looking at NEWSDAY history of Peconic, a hamlet, we find, "They took goose grease and skunk oil and applied it to the rails for about a mile west of the village." I hope this information is useful or, at least, interesting.
