There are 2 Indian reservations in Suffolk County. (I'm including after my name a NYS Geographic Glossary with the NYS definitions of county, city, town, village, hamlet and postal zone.) Beginning on the north and moving in a clockwise direction, the Hamlet of Sound Beach in the Town of Brookhaven is bordered on the north by the Long Island Sound; on the east by the Hamlet of Rocky Point; on the south by the Hamlets of Rocky Point and Miller Place; and, on the west by the Hamlet of Miller Place. And, as occurs in every one of Suffolk County's 157 communities (0 cities, 31 villages and 126 hamlets), the Hamlet of Sound Beach has a different border than does the "Sound Beach, NY 11789" postal zone (i.e., a place can have other than a Sound Beach mailing address and be in Lindenhurst). County A county is a municipal corporation, a subdivision of the state, created to perform state functions; a "regional" government. All counties are divided into cities, towns and Indian reservations. City A city is a unique governmental entity with its own special charter. Cities are not sub-divided, except into neighborhoods, which are informal geographic areas. Town A town is a municipal corporation and encompasses all territory within the state except that within cities or Indian reservations. Towns can be sub-divided into villages and hamlets. Village A village is a general purpose municipal corporation formed voluntarily by the residents of an area in one or more towns to provide themselves with municipal services. The pattern of village organization is similar to those of a city. A village is divided into neighborhoods, which are informal geographic areas. Hamlet A hamlet is an unincorporated area in one or more towns that is governed at-large by the town(s) it is in. A hamlet is divided into neighborhoods, which are informal geographic areas. Postal Zone "City" and "Town" A postal zone "City" and "Town" is an administrative district established by the U.S. Postal Service to deliver the mail. Postal zone "City" and "Town" may not (but are encouraged to) conform to municipal or community borders. Thus, postal zone location does not always determine city, village or hamlet location. Please be aware: In many areas of New York State, the problem of non-conforming postal zones leads to a situation where the majority of places have a different community name in their mailing address than the community where that place is actually located.
The German Genealogy Group will hold its next monthly meeting on Thursday, November 10th at: The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, The Family History Center, 160 Washington Avenue Plainview, New York. The program topic will be: Dating Photographs Through Fashion with presenter Beth Chamberlain, a volunteer at Old Bethpage Village Restoration, a member of the Costume Society of America and by profession, a librarian at Touro Law Center. Have you ever wondered who is looking back at you when you look at an old photograph? The clothes they wear along with their accessories and hair styles all give us clues about when they lived and even some about their lives. Learn to decode some of the clues so you can start putting names to the faces. We'll look at images from the earliest days of photography through WWI. An Orientation session for beginners and newcomers will be held at 7 PM and the regular meeting will start at 7:30. Among the many benefits of GGG membership are a newsletter published ten times a year, a database of surnames, a free translation service, a book and CD lending library, interesting guest speakers at the meetings, mentoring, a start-up kit of helpful information and much more. We welcome all who are interested in researching their Germanic origins. There is no fee for guests and all are welcome. Visit our website at http://www.GermanGenealogyGroup.com and while there, be sure and visit our free, searchable databases which are updated regularly.

I tried looking through the database my library has. They have Newsday from 1985 to present, I did not find an obit or a death notice, but I did find this, not sure if it is that lady in question.... (Copyright Newsday Inc., 1986) CONFESSIONS OF A NIGHTINGALE. One-man play starring Ray Stricklyn asTennessee Williams. Adapted by Charlotte Chandler and Stricklyn fromChandler's "The Ultimate Seduction." Directed by John Tillinger. Audrey Wood Playhouse. HE'S A GRAY-HAIRED man in a white linen suit, sipping from a glass of white wine as he welcomes visitors - us - to his Key West home. He has just emerged from a long depression, he says, and he's ready to talk about himself. "I'm going to let it all hang out." (Copyright Newsday Inc., 2001) Jacqueline Babbin, a television writer and producer who won Emmy and Peabody awards, has died. She was 80. She died Oct. 6, 2001 at her home in Kent, Conn., after a short illness. Babbin had a broad career in TV, working initially with pioneering producer David Susskind. Later, she produced Emmy-winning dramas before switching to daytime television as producer of the soap opera "All My Children." But not all of her shows were successes. In 1975- 76, she produced the much-anticipated CBS prime-time series "Beacon Hill," which folded after 11 episodes to become one of the biggest flops in the network's history. A native New Yorker, Babbin graduated from Smith College. One of her first jobs was as production secretary to Audrey Wood, who was Tennessee Williams' agent. But her first big break in television was working as a story editor for Susskind. She built a reputation as one of the better story editors and drama producers in the industry and broke new ground for a woman by p! roducing episodes of the "Dupont Show of the Week" and "Armstrong Family Circle." After leaving Susskind, she produced Arthur Miller's "A Memory of Two Mondays" and Lonnie Elder's "Ceremonies of Dark Old Men." She then turned to "Beacon Hill," which - though critically successful - failed in the ratings. Set in Boston, "Beacon Hill" tried to be America's answer to the popular British TV series "Upstairs, Downstairs." Babbin moved to Los Angeles in the mid-1970s and produced the miniseries "Sybil" for NBC. Starring Sally Field and Joanne Woodward, "Sybil" told the story of a woman with multiple personalities. Field won an Emmy in the starring role. Babbin was a producer in Los Angeles for several years after the success of "Sybil" and served as vice president for novels and miniseries at ABC-TV. Finding none of those posts fulfilling, she jumped at the chance to return to New York when the offer came to produce "All My Children," which she worked on from 1982 to 1986. She left the se! ries for what she said was retirement, but later Babbin was the producer for a year on "Loving," another ABC soap. After she finally retired, she wrote two mystery novels: "Prime Time Corpse" and "Bloody Soaps." Hope it helps..... Terre

According to today's NEWSDAY (Monday, October 24), "2 preservationists have been working to turn Motor Parkway’s original pavement into bike and hiking paths." NEWSDAY continues, "Denis Byrne and Sam Berliner III recently walked along a Long Island Power Authority right of way in Manhasset Hills, ignoring the row of utility poles and fences delineating residents' backyards. They were focused on the broken asphalt poking up through the ground. 'Under all this muck,' said Berliner of Glen Head, 'you can see the original paving.' That's the pavement remaining from William K. Vanderbilt Jr.'s groundbreaking Long Island Motor Parkway, the first reinforced-concrete, high-speed, limited-access highway built in the United States."
