    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/jUB.2ACI/1104 Message Board Post: I received the following from John Martino. It is reference to one of our largest volunteer efforts to date, the Manhattan Bride's Index. Any help you can provide would be helpful. Tony I recently sent an e-mail stating that we were not going to start the Manhattan Bride Index. I have all the records for this project but most of the cards are those cards with ten names per card. Those are the ones that everyone fears. We also have cards with only one name on them. The cards with the ten names per card are the ones that we have to scan. We won’t be getting to them until we get a better scanner. The cards with one name do not have to be scanned. That would be a waste of time. So…………. I would like to give these cards with one name per card to the volunteers on the Long Island. There are approximately 4,500 names per box. They are too expensive and too valuable to mail. I will be at the Family History Library, in Plainview, on Tuesday night from 7 pm to 9:30 pm and would like to meet volunteers there to give them a box. This would save me from running all over Long Island. I realize the holidays are coming up and these can wait until you get to them. Let me know if you can meet me there on Tuesday or any other time it would be convenient for you. John Martino JohnM16881@aol.com

    2. Lilly Martin
    3. Dear Eileen, Now I understand more why you were such a wonderfull helper to me on my recent posting about my own MILLS family. I had NOT asked you about what families you were working on personally, sorry for that. As you already know, I am looking for my Mills family which starts off with Gideon Mills b. about 1797 in New York state ( that is a BIG place). His moved to Fulton Co IL, and he and his second wife had a son named Nelson Mills b. 4-8-1844 Fulton Co IL. This man married Ellen Jones, d/o Isaac and Ruth Jones. I see that you mention a NELSON MILLS as well. Is this pure coincidence, or is NELSON a family name used?? My MILLS family has an old letter which says that their line began on "LONG ISLAND" NY. (another big place). I think I am looking for a Mills family who has Gideon Mills, then Ira Mills, then Alonzo Mills, and these 3 brothers went to Fulton Co IL as of 1840 census. They might be cousins only, but more likely brothers, all born in New York State. 2. On (11/27/05 10:30:43 AM MST), in a posting to NYSUFFOL-L@rootsweb.com, supplemented by a private eMail, Margaret Babicsak Loroff (marlo50@nwonline.net) asked, "I am trying to find information about the above names. In 1880 Mitzlaff was in Lawrence County, Ohio. 1900 census shows them in Suffolk County, NY. Any information about those names in that location would be greatly appreciated. This is a lateral line for my search." For questions such as yours, you may want to contact the Lindenhurst Memorial Library and the Babylon Public Library (the library can suggest which local newspaper might have this information and other possible sources of information): Lindenhurst Memorial Library 1 Lee Avenue Lindenhurst, NY 11757-5399 Tel: 631/957-7755 Fax: 631/957-7114 eMail: lindlib@suffolk.lib.ny.us http://lml.suffolk.lib.ny.us/ Babylon Public Library 24 South Carll Avenue Babylon, NY 11702 Tel: 631/669-1624 Fax: 631/669-7826 eMail: bablref@suffolk.lib.ny.us http://www.suffolk.lib.ny.us/libraries/babl/ The pertinent geography of Lindenhurst: Lindenhurst is a village (incorporated in 1923) in the south part of the Town of Babylon, in the southwest part of Suffolk County. There are 3 villages (municipal corporations) and 12 hamlets (unincorporated areas) all or partly in the Town of Babylon. There are no cities and 10 towns in Suffolk County. There are 2 Indian reservations in Suffolk County. (I'm including after my name a NYS Geographic Glossary with the NYS definitions of county, city, town, village, hamlet and postal zone.) Beginning on the north and moving in a clockwise direction, the Village of Lindenhurst in the Town of Babylon is bordered on the north by the Hamlet of North Lindenhurst; on the east by the Hamlet of West Babylon; on the south by the Great South Bay; and, on the west by the Hamlet of Copiague and the Hamlet of North Amityville. And, as occurs in every one of Suffolk County's 157 communities (0 cities, 31 villages and 126 hamlets), the Village of Lindenhurst has a different border than does the "Lindenhurst, NY 11757" postal zone (i.e., a place can have a Lindenhurst mailing address and not be in Lindenhurst and a place can have other than a Lindenhurst mailing address and be in Lindenhurst). Those places that have a "Lindenhurst, NY" mailing address that are not in the Village of Lindenhurst are in the Hamlet of North Lindenhurst; and, at the same time, there are places in the Village of Lindenhurst with a "West Babylon, NY 11704" mailing address. The pertinent geography of Babylon: It is important to know that there are 3 "Babylons" (from smallest to largest, in order of acreage): 1. There is the Village of Babylon 2. There is the Babylon, NY 11702 postal zone 3. There is the Town of Babylon Babylon is a village (incorporated in 1893) in the southeast part of the Town of Babylon, in the southwest part of Suffolk County (along the Babylon/Islip town line). There are 3 villages (municipal corporations) and 12 hamlets (unincorporated areas) all or partly in the Town of Babylon. There are no cities and 10 towns in Suffolk County. There are 2 Indian reservations in Suffolk County. (I'm including after my name a NYS Geographic Glossary with the NYS definitions of county, city, town, village, hamlet and postal zone.) Beginning on the north and moving in a clockwise direction, the Village of Babylon in the Town of Babylon is bordered on the north by the Hamlet of North Babylon; on the east by the Hamlet of West Islip in the Town of Islip (the Babylon/Islip town line); on the south by the Great South Bay; and, on the west by the Hamlet of West Babylon. And, as occurs in every one of Suffolk County's 157 communities (0 cities, 31 villages and 126 hamlets), the Village of Babylon has a different border than does the "Babylon, NY 11702" postal zone (i.e., a place can have a Babylon mailing address and not be in Babylon and a place can have other than a Babylon mailing address and be in Babylon). Those places that have a "Babylon, NY" mailing address that are not in the Village of Babylon are in the Hamlet of North Babylon and in the Hamlet of West Babylon; and, at the same time, there are places in the Village of Babylon with a "West Babylon, NY 11704" mailing address. For those who have their copy of the 2004 or earlier edition of the LI Population Survey or have already downloaded the report from the Long Island Power Authority web site (eMail me directly if you need instructions on how to access and download the report), you'll find the Village of Lindenhurst (incorporated in 1923) and the Village of Babylon (incorporated in 1893) in the Town of Babylon, Suffolk County on pages 14 & 18 (map) and 19 (population estimate). I hope this information is useful or, at least, interesting. Regards, Walter Greenspan . Cities, Towns, Villages, Hamlets and Postal Zones in New York State New York State is divided into counties. County A county is a municipal corporation, a subdivision of the state, created to perform state functions; a "regional" government. All counties are divided into cities, towns and Indian reservations. City A city is a unique governmental entity with its own special charter. Cities are not sub-divided, except into neighborhoods, which are informal geographic areas. Town A town is a municipal corporation and encompasses all territory within the state except that within cities or Indian reservations. Towns can be sub-divided into villages and hamlets. Village A village is a general purpose municipal corporation formed voluntarily by the residents of an area in one or more towns to provide themselves with municipal services. The pattern of village organization is similar to those of a city. A village is divided into neighborhoods, which are informal geographic areas. Hamlet A hamlet is an unincorporated area in one or more towns that is governed at-large by the town(s) it is in. A hamlet is divided into neighborhoods, which are informal geographic areas. Postal Zone "City" and "Town" A postal zone "City" and "Town" is an administrative district established by the U.S. Postal Service to deliver the mail. Postal zone "City" and "Town" may not (but are encouraged to) conform to municipal or community borders. Thus, postal zone location does not always determine city, village or hamlet location. Please be aware: In many areas of New York State, the problem of non-conforming postal zones leads to a situation where the majority of places have a different community name in their mailing address than the community where that place is actually located.

    3. Hello, I will give you the 3 Pettit names I have in my files on the BROUWER family of Brooklyn and NYC. 1. Everardus Brouwer b. 1689 d. 1762, married Mary Pettit d. 1772 (I don't know her ancestry) 2. Wyntie Brouwer b. 1701 d. 1773, married Richard Pettit, d. after 1760. 3. John Pettit married Elizabeth Brouwer on 3-10-1801. Sorry I don't have more to give, but these 3 marriages would all have been either in New York City or Brooklyn area. I hope that this might lead somewhere for you? Perhaps there is someone listed on rootsweb tree, who has worked on these names and understands the Pettit side of the family well? All my ancestors had it, whether they came from England to Illinois and Iowa to improve their business opportunities or came to California from Iowa for the same reason. I sure wouldn't be around if they had stayed where they were.

    1. Brick Wall #2 possibly Mills

    3. I'm happy to report that my brick Wall #1 has crumpled, thanks to Y-DNA Eaton Family Project! I now know that I am descended from John Eaton of Dedham, via Jacob Eaton who came to Long Island,NY about 1760 and married Jane Robinson. My 2nd brick wall is his son Thomas Eaton's first wife, Phebe (b.1775-1785) probably on Long Island,NY. The Eaton's lived at Mt Sinai and Jacob died 1798 and then on 1800 census Jane is found HH in Ward 5 NYC and based on ages of males in the HH, Thomas is one of them. The following HH for Mills in Wd 5 NYC are as follows; George Mills, male age 45yr up (born before 1755) alone in HH James Mills, male age 45yr up(born bef. 1755) with female same age Joshua Mills, male age 45yr up(born bef 1755) with female same age, 2 females 25-45(1755-1775) and 1 female age 15-25(1775-1785) this could be my Phebe** Samuel Mills, 4 males 15-25 (1775-1785) 1 male 0-10(1790-1800) 1 fem 15-25,1 fem 0-10 Thomas Mills, 1 male 25-45(1755-1775) 1 fem same age,1 male 10-15, 1 male 0-10 Thomas is shown with property on a tax list in Brookhaven, Suff Co. NY 1802 and 1806, so he must have returned to Long Is. He married Phebe about 1802 and their first son, Apollos was born 1803. By the 1810 NY census, they are living at Wallkill, Orange Co.NY where there are also Mills families living. The HHs of Jacob Mills and Samuel Mills are on the same page of this census as Thos Eaton. Jacob Mills was male 45 up(b.bef.1765)female same age,and 9 others of varied ages Samuel Mills : 2 males 15-25(1785-1795) 2 females 15-25, 5 children There was also an Ebenezer Mills at Wallkill in 1800 and 1810 census;on 1810 his HH was: Ebenezer male 45up (b.bef. 1765) female 25-45(1765-1785) 3 males 15-25, 1male 16-18,2 fem 10-15 and 1 male 10-15. On 1790 Brookhaven census, there was a Micah Mills. Thos & Phebe had the following children; Apollos b.1803, Charry Ann b.1805,Nelson 1807(his grandson stated in later records that Nelson was born "Long Island NY") Eliza b.1808 and the following born Orange Co. NY;MaryAnn b.1810, Adeline b. 1814 and Harvey b. 1817. By 1820 census they are living in Tompkins County NY where they had their last son, Chauncey b.ca.1824 and Phebe must have died in that childbirth or shortly after and she is buried there. Thomas subsequently married again to Sarah (Tompkins? Fosdick?) and had another son and daughter in Tomp.Co.NY. I've favored Phebe being a Mills because there always seemed to be a closeness to that family, but she may not have been. I just do not have enough info on her to determine who she was. The obit of her son, Nelson(1842) said she was very religious and influenced him greatly so that he was instrumental in helping establish a church at Varna, Tomp.Co.NY in 1840. Her daughter, Adeline somehow owned a property in Ithaca which I have surmised must have come from an inheritance from her Mother's family. Any of this "strike a chord" for any researchers of Mills, or other surname? Thanks for any help and/or leads on this. Eileen

    1. RE: Wright and Pettit
    2. Hi List: I am looking fopr information on Julia Lorretta Pettit b. 16 May 1845, (She said at Rochester, but we can find no proof). She first married Jun 1866, Edward Wright born about 1869 in New York. Edward died in a construction accident before about 1870 while the family was living in or near Islip, Suffolk,NY. Edward and Julia's son J. Francis or Norman Wright is on the 1870 census for Saryville. In 1870 she married John Whitney of Florida. They had several children in Suffolk County and were on the 1880 census for Hempstead,Queens, New York. In 1884 they came to Florida. Julia said her parents were Jacob Pettit and Sarah. She had a brother William who died in the Civil War (Cannot prove) and a sister Mary who Married in New York. I have serached the census and city directories and some work house records for Rochester. No records of them was found. Jacob is said to have gone west with the gold rush of 1848. Again, we cannot prove. J. Francis or Norman Wright is on the 1880 census as Francis Whitney (female), in Hempstead which is a mistake. Francis married Deborah A. about 1890 based on the date of birth of their first daughter Maud Wright born 15 Mar 1894. She may have died in Worcester,Mass Feb 1982, unmarried. This is base on SSDI records. The second daughter was Hazel born about 1907. She is on the 1920 census, but have no information on her after that. The only other clue we have on Julia Pettit is that she was in an Orphanage (Workhouse) in Brighton. There is/was a town of Brighton in/near Rochester, but again we can find no information. She said she made a rope of sheets to escape from the second floor of the home. Any information or suggestions on the Pettit's or Wright's will be appreciated. John Whitney

    3. Roland, From the diary of Cynthia Hutchinson Norton from Middle Island, Suffolk Co., NY: "April 3 [1810] --Vendue of Joel Swezey attended. They are going to move to the new country. " "Vendue" means "auction". The next time I find Joel, he is in Cayuga Co NY, so I assume that is the "new country" referred to in the diary. One guess is that as fathers died, their sons (usually) ended up with smaller plots of land to farm. After Joel died in Steuben Co NY in 1844, his land was divided among his five sons. Two of his sons moved west in the mid-1850s to the later "new country" in Iowa. Diane http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/jUB.2ACI/1103 Message Board Post: Hi, Can anyone hazard an educated guess as to why my ancestor, David Youngs b.1775, was motivated to leave Suffolk Co. abt. 1796 to come up here to upstate NY? This area was wilderness then! Roland Hanke

Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/jUB.2ACI/1103.1.1 Message Board Post: Hi Diane, Thank you for your reply. Upstate refers to Broome County in this case. David was the second of four brothers. The oldest, John, and the youngest, William moved from Greenport to Coxhachie. James, the third brother, stayed on the farm. I am puzzled as to why David made such a drastic move. They were from a prominent family (desc. from Rev. John Youngs). It seems to me that he should have had good prospects nearer home. Of course, it could have been family (the Youngs family is like that), my mother left home at 16, in the middle of the Depression, just to get away. Someone else suggested that he came on a Revolutionary War land grant. I guess anything is possible but, I will probably never know. Roland
