    3. Hello Suffolk Co. researchers, Thanks to the help of another researcher who looked up some names at the library, I am shareing this research data with you all. If you happen to notice a name connected to you, please reply to me on this list and let's discuss it. I am researching Smith Brower b. 1817 Queens Co NY, he married Susan, they had a family in Islip, NY: Ezra, Henry, Mellisa, Alonzo, John. Ezra Brower was a ship Captain, and married Elizabeth Brower Pullis, they had a family in Islip, NY : Smith b. 1858, Peter b. 1860, Susie b. 1865, Crissie b. 1876 Smith Brower b. 1858 married Ella Johnson Clock, and they had a family in Islip, NY: Louella b. 1880, Frank William b. 1881, August b. 1889, Ervin b. 1889, Alonzo b. 1895. The sad part of this story is that both Frank and August were given away as orphans, even though both of their parents lived very long lives in Islip, NY. The 2 boys were sent to Missouri on the Orphan Train, and all the records survive which prove the story. A direct descendant of one of those orphans is now looking for the ancestors of Smith Brower b. 1817 Queens Co NY, so this is what we need. Anyone researching any BROWER/BREWER names in Queens or Suffolk Co NY in the 1800-1900 time frame please share your information here, and maybe we can work together. Best regards, Lilly Martin >From the library (Sachem) in Suffolk County and found the following: Book: Residents Town of Islip 1720-1865 1865 Smith Brower (b. 1817 Queens Co NY) Ezra Brower (not there 1860) (s/o Smith Brower b. 1817) Seth Clock Stephen " (father in law to Ezra Brower) Warren " Above plus many others in 1860 1850 BROWER CLOCK Martha Asa/Julia Mary Eliphalet/Phebe Peter Foster Smith/Susan**** Nathaniel/Lucretia Nathaniel/Amanda Seth/Eliza 1840 CLOCK Asa Eliphalet Henry Matilda Nathaniel 1830 CLOCK Asa Henry N.O. Found in 1930 Census Smith Brower, Father living with Harry, Mable and son Harry in Woodmere (Nassau County Long Island) Born 1856 and another Smith Brower born 1919 and living in Islip.

My neighbour is a Van der Meer and his family is all over Ontario, he tells me that the "ders" are from a certain area of the Netherlands. I have my Van Meers landing in Canada in late 1780's to early 1800's. I can track marriages in 1803 but I do not have access to US Census and I tried searching ship records but as you know there are many different spellings. Hunts I have from Ireland, howevver, I did trace them to 1830's here in Ontario, but that was the easy stuff I have not tried to go back further. A family member has the family bible. Someday I will see it. My Hill married a Van Meer (grandparents) but I haven't looked at that side....the ones I do know of settled in Marysburg in 1800. Maybe this will help in some way.

    2. On 1/8/06 (9:02:27 PM MST), in a posting to the Nassau County Ancestry Board that was 'gatewayed' to NYNASSAU-L@rootsweb.com, Debbie Fauber (immisty038@hotmail.com) asked, "What county is Southampton in." Southampton is a village (incorporated in 1894) in the south-central section of the Town of Southampton, in the southeast part of Suffolk County. There are currently 6 villages (municipal corporations) and 17 hamlets (unincorporated areas) all or partly in the Town of Southampton. There are no cities and 10 towns in Suffolk County. There are 2 Indian reservations in Suffolk County. (I'm including after my name a NYS Geographic Glossary with the NYS definitions of county, city, town, village, hamlet and postal zone.) Beginning on the north and moving in a clockwise direction, the Village of Southampton in the Town of Southampton is bordered on the north by the Hamlet of Tuckahoe, the Hamlet of North Sea and the Hamlet of Water Mill; on the east by the Hamlet of Water Mill; on the south by the Atlantic Ocean; and, on the west by Shinnecock Bay and the Shinnecock Indian Reservation. And, as occurs in every one of Suffolk County's 157 communities (0 cities, 32 villages and 125 hamlets), the Village of Southampton has a different border than does the "Southampton, NY 11968" postal zone (i.e., a place can have a Southampton mailing address and not be in Southampton and a place can be in Southampton and have other than a Southampton mailing address). Those places that have a "Southampton, NY" mailing address that are not in the Village of Southampton are in the Shinnecock Indian Reservation and in the Hamlet of Tuckahoe. At the same time, there are places in the Village of Southampton that have a "Watermill, NY 11976" mailing address. For those who have their copy of the 2004 or earlier edition of the LI Population Survey or have already downloaded the report from the Long Island Power Authority web site (eMail me directly if you need instructions on how to access and download the report), you'll find the Village of Southampton (incorporated in 1894) in the Town of Southampton, Suffolk County on pages 15 & 28 (map) and 29 (population estimate). I hope this information is useful or, at least, interesting. Regards, Walter Greenspan Great Falls, MT & Jericho, NY . Cities, Towns, Villages, Hamlets and Postal Zones in New York State New York State is divided into counties. County A county is a municipal corporation, a subdivision of the state, created to perform state functions; a "regional" government. All counties are divided into cities, towns and Indian reservations. City A city is a unique governmental entity with its own special charter. Cities are not sub-divided, except into neighborhoods, which are informal geographic areas. Town A town is a municipal corporation and encompasses all territory within the state except that within cities or Indian reservations. Towns can be sub-divided into villages and hamlets. Village A village is a general purpose municipal corporation formed voluntarily by the residents of an area in one or more towns to provide themselves with municipal services. The pattern of village organization is similar to those of a city. A village is divided into neighborhoods, which are informal geographic areas. Hamlet A hamlet is an unincorporated area in one or more towns that is governed at-large by the town(s) it is in. A hamlet is divided into neighborhoods, which are informal geographic areas. Postal Zone "City" and "Town" A postal zone "City" and "Town" is an administrative district established by the U.S. Postal Service to deliver the mail. Postal zone "City" and "Town" may not (but are encouraged to) conform to municipal or community borders. Thus, postal zone location does not always determine city, village or hamlet location. Please be aware: In many areas of New York State, the problem of non-conforming postal zones leads to a situation where the majority of places have a different community name in their mailing address than the community where that place is actually located.
