    2. On 3/19/06 (3:43:41 PM MST), in a posting to NYSUFFOL-L@rootsweb.com, Jim WARD (jimone2@telapex.com) asks, "Hadden HUDSON died November 1985, living in East Marion, Suffolk, County. His spouse Hazel HUDSON died March 1996, living in Mattituck, Suffolk County. I attempted to obtain a death certificate from the respective Clerks. I was turned down because I am not on the list of relatives entitled to the information. I am a great-nephew. Can a list member or members supply me with the name and address of the libraries and newspapers serving the respective towns in the time period 1985-1996. I would now like to obtain a copy of the obits for each, if one was printed." I will be replying in two separate comments because you are asking about two separate communities: East Marion and Mattituck. The second of the two comments is for Mattituck: For questions such as yours, you may want to contact the Mattituck-Laurel Library (the library can suggest which local newspaper might have this information and other possible sources of information): Mattituck-Laurel Library P.O. There are 1 village (municipal corporation) and 10 hamlets (unincorporated areas) in the Town of Southold. There are no cities and 10 towns in Suffolk County. There are 2 Indian reservations in Suffolk County. (I'm including after my name a NYS Geographic Glossary with the NYS definitions of county, city, town, village, hamlet and postal zone.) Beginning on the north and moving in a clockwise direction, the Hamlet of Mattituck in the Town of Southold is bordered on the north by the Long Island Sound; on the east by the Hamlets of Peconic and Cutchogue; on the south by the Peconic Bay and the Hamlet of Laurel; and, on the west by Hamlet of Northville in the Town of Riverhead (the Southold/Riverhead own line). And, as occurs in every one of Suffolk County's 157 communities (0 cities, 32 villages and 125 hamlets), the Hamlet of Mattituck has a different border than does the "Mattituck, NY 11952" postal zone (i.e., a place can have a Mattituck mailing address and not be in Mattituck and a place can have other than a Mattituck mailing address and be in Mattituck). Those places that have a "Mattituck, NY" mailing address that are not in the Hamlet of Mattituck are in the Hamlet of Laurel and in the Hamlet of Cutchogue; and, at the same time, there are places in the Hamlet of Mattituck with a "Riverhead, NY 11901" and a "Cutchogue, NY 11935" mailing address. For those who have their copy of the 2005 or earlier edition of the LI Population Survey or have already downloaded the report from the Long Island Power Authority web site (eMail me directly if you need instructions on how to access and download the report), you'll find the Hamlet of Mattituck in the Town of Southold, Suffolk County on pages 15 & 30 (map) and 31 (population estimate). 2. Lilly Martin
    3. Hello Bill and all others, This lecture sounds like a Gold Mine of information. I live overseas, so I can't make it, but I would love to. I wanted to say that while looking online at the Smithtown, Suffol Co NY Public Library, I found out they have a Long Island Room, dedicated to Genealogy and History of Long Island, and they have in that room the "Handley Collection". This is named for a man who donated the genealogy he collected of many, many families in Long Island. I feel that it would be a Gold Mine of information for many of us. May I kindly and sincerely ask all of you reading this, that if you do in fact get into the Handley Collection, to please look up the name BROWER and make some notes and send them to me? I feel that the name BROWER in Queens Co and Suffolk Co NY probably either came from a Dutch immigrant in Manhattan or Brooklyn named BROUWER, there were several, or possibly came from an English immigrant possibly from CT, who later came into eastern Long Island with the English settlers from CT. These are my "feelings' so far, and may or may not pan out later. Remember the name BROWER if you see this listed. The name BROWER was very numerous in Hempstead, Queens Co NY. Is anyone researching this name in Long Island? I am trying to help about 5 Brower researchers of this area, earliest name that of Smith Brower b. 1817 Queens Co NY, who settled in Islip, Suffolk Co NY. Trying to find the father of this Smith Brower. So, it appears that Franklinville may have included today's Hamlet of Aquebogue and Hamlet of Jamesport in the Town of Riverhead and the Hamlet of Laurel in the Town of Southold. I hope this information is useful or, at least, interesting. Regards, Walter Greenspan Great Falls, MT & Jericho, NY

    2. This corrects my immediate prior posting where I incorrectly included information on Mattituck rather than Cutchogue: On 3/16/06 (7:07:15 AM MST), as part of a posting to NY-LONGISLAND-L@rootsweb.com, Marie Yeager (lwa1331@yahoo.com) asked, "Looking for any information on my grandmother Henrietta Domaleski. She was Born June 1922, Was supposed to be the daugher of Bruno(Bronislaw) and Nelli Domaleski. She Died Jan 1986. She grew up and lived in the Cutchogue area of Long Island." If you haven't already done so, for questions such as yours, you may want to contact the Cutchogue - New Suffolk Free Library (the library can suggest which local newspaper might have this information and other possible sources of information): Cutchogue - New Suffolk Free Library 27550 Main Road P.O. Box 935 Cutchogue, NY 11935-0935 Tel: 631/734-6360 Fax: 631/734-7010 eMail: cutclib@suffolk.lib.ny.us http://www.cutchoguelibrary.org/ The pertinent geography: Cutchogue is a hamlet (an unincorporated area) in the western part of the Town of Southold, in the northeast part of Suffolk County. There are 1 village (municipal corporation) and 10 hamlets (unincorporated areas) in the Town of Southold. There are no cities and 10 towns in Suffolk County. There are 2 Indian reservations in Suffolk County. (I'm including after my name a NYS Geographic Glossary with the NYS definitions of county, city, town, village, hamlet and postal zone.) Beginning on the north and moving in a clockwise direction, the Hamlet of Cutchogue in the Town of Southold is bordered on the north by the Hamlets of Mattituck and Peconic; on the east by the Hamlet of Peconic; on the south by the Peconic Bay and the Hamlet of New Suffolk; and, on the west by the Hamlet of Mattituck. And, as occurs in every one of Suffolk County's 157 communities (0 cities, 32 villages and 125 hamlets), the Hamlet of Cutchogue has a different border than does the "Cutchogue, NY 11935" postal zone (i.e., a place can have a Cutchogue mailing address and not be in Cutchogue and a place can have other than a Cutchogue mailing address and be in Cutchogue). Those places that have a "Cutchogue, NY" mailing address that are not in the Hamlet of Cutchogue are in the Hamlet of Mattituck and the Hamlet of Peconic; and, at the same time, there are places in the Hamlet of Cutchogue with a "New Suffolk, NY 11956" and a "Southold, NY 11971" mailing address. For those who have their copy of the 2005 or earlier edition of the LI Population Survey or have already downloaded the report from the Long Island Power Authority web site (eMail me directly if you need instructions on how to access and download the report), you'll find the Hamlet of Cutchogue in the Town of Southold, Suffolk County on pages 15 & 30 (map) and 31 (population estimate). I hope this information is useful or, at least, interesting. Walter Greenspan Great Falls, Mt & Jericho, NY Cities, Towns, Villages, Hamlets and Postal Zones in New York State New York State is divided into counties. County A county is a municipal corporation, a subdivision of the state, created to perform state functions; a "regional" government. All counties are divided into cities, towns and Indian reservations. City A city is a unique governmental entity with its own special charter. Cities are not sub-divided, except into neighborhoods, which are informal geographic areas. Town A town is a municipal corporation and encompasses all territory within the state except that within cities or Indian reservations. Towns can be sub-divided into villages and hamlets. Village A village is a general purpose municipal corporation formed voluntarily by the residents of an area in one or more towns to provide themselves with municipal services. The pattern of village organization is similar to those of a city. A village is divided into neighborhoods, which are informal geographic areas. Hamlet A hamlet is an unincorporated area in one or more towns that is governed at-large by the town(s) it is in. A hamlet is divided into neighborhoods, which are informal geographic areas. Postal Zone "City" and "Town" A postal zone "City" and "Town" is an administrative district established by the U.S. Postal Service to deliver the mail. Postal zone "City" and "Town" may not (but are encouraged to) conform to municipal or community borders. Thus, postal zone location does not always determine city, village or hamlet location. Please be aware: In many areas of New York State, the problem of non-conforming postal zones leads to a situation where the majority of places have a different community name in their mailing address than the community where that place is actually located.
