For deaths in the 1940's and 1950's, do I contact the county or Patchogue? Might anyone have a URL that will provide information about the address and cost? TIA!
On 1/19/03 (5:51:34 PM MST), [email protected] asked, "For deaths in the 1940's and 1950's, do I contact the county or Patchogue? Might anyone have a URL that will provide information about the address and cost?" If the death occurred within the borders of the Village of Patchogue (incorporated in 1893) in the Town of Brookhaven, then you would want to contact the Village Clerk for the Village of Patchogue. If the death occurred outside the Village of Patchogue but within the Patchogue, NY postal zone, then you would want to contact the Town Clerk for the Town of Brookhaven. Here's the info for the Village Clerk of the Village of Patchogue: Village Clerk Village of Patchogue 14 Baker Street P.O. Box 719 Patchogue NY 11772 Tel: 631/475-4300 Fax: 631/475-4314 eMail: [email protected] http://www.patchoguevillage.org/contact.html Here's the info for the Town Clerk of the Town of Brookhaven: Town Clerk Town of Brookhaven 205 South Ocean Avenue Patchogue, NY 11772 Tel: 631/654-7827 Fax: 631/654-7888 fax eMail: [email protected] http://www.brookhaven.org/departments/town_clerk.asp?dept_id=15&page_id=15 I hope this information is useful or, at least, interesting. I had a ggggrandmother named Mary E Terry who was married to a Frederick A Weed; they were the parents of William Henry Weed and that is all I know of them. William was born in 1857, so I would assume that Mary may have been born in the 1830's, if not earlier. That's all I have for info, but I am still seeking more on her and would be interested in more info about any Terry family members from the Suffolk County or Amityville/Babylon areas. Thank you.

On 1/12/03 (6:53:47 AM MST), Pete Apple.([email protected]) asked, "Can anyone tell me where Hungry Harbor is (was)? My information says Long Island, NY. I would presume that would be Suffolk County? Thanks for any help." According to NEWSDAY Hungry Harbor is now called Valley Stream (Valley Stream is a village in the Town of Hempstead, Nassau County): "Beginning in the late 1700s, as European settlers began farming on Nassau County’s south shore in the area that is now Valley Stream, small communities developed. One was a settlement of squatters that became known as Hungry Harbor because its poor residents often went hungry. It was called a “harbor” because it was the only farmland around with fertile land and access to the sea. The nickname was retained through the 1900s, even after the area became known as Valley Stream." Source: http://www.newsday.com/features/custom/names/ny-namesofli-hungryharborroad,0,4 276544.htmlstory The Village of Valley Stream (incorporated in 1925) is in the Town of Hempstead in Nassau County. But, there are several other communities that also have a "Valley Stream, NY" mailing address, such as the Hamlet of North Valley Stream and the Hamlet of South Valley Stream. They are also all within the Town of Hempstead. .....................................................acres .....Village of Valley Stream .............2,258 .....Hamlet of North Valley Stream ....1,209 .....Hamlet of South Valley Stream.......566 .....Valley Stream, NY 11580...........2,496 .....Valley Stream, NY 11581...........1,813 ...................total............................4,309 If, the address you seek is actually in the Village of Valley Stream, then the Town Clerk of the Town of Hempstead will tell you and also, most probably, provide the address, etc., for the Village Clerk of the Village of Valley Stream. But, as indicated by the acreage numbers, the Village of Valley Stream is only about 52% of the "Valley Stream, NY" postal zone. Hence, there is about an equal chance that a place with a "Valley Stream, NY" mailing address is not in the Village of Valley Stream. I hope this information is useful or, at least, interesting. Reposting interests: Searching for researchers of the George HARRIS family of Southampton, mentioned in George Rogers Howell's "Early History of Southampton, L.I." I research the HARRIS family of Montgomery, NY (Orange Co.) and have reason to believe the family originated in Southampton. A footnote on page 76 of "The First 150 years of the Goodwill Presbyterian Church, Montgomery, NY" by James Milligan Dickson, pub. 1880 indicates Harris family of Montgomery descended from George Harris(1657) of Southampton. (Others who came to Orange Co. from Southampton included the HOWELL family of East Coldenham, the WOODRUFF family, the HAINES, TOPPING and the GOODALE families.) Seeking parents/birthplace of John HARRIS of Montgomery (b. 1748-d. 8 Mar. 1825) m. Abigail? Children: David (1775-4 Feb. 1845), John (1785-1823) possibly Martha (bap. 27 Sept. 1772, married Peter LOW 12-23-1791). This family is buried in the Goodwill Presbyterian Church in Montgomery.
