Hello - I, too, am interested in obtaining copies of obits of family members who died and are buried in the cemetery in Amityville. Is there anyone there who can help or knows how to go about doing this? Most of the people I am researching passed away between 1938 - 1969. Thanks.

Rooters and Rootsers, Today's NEWSDAY has an article, "Huntington Town Kicks Off 350th Anniversary", of which the first 3 paragraphs: Huntington Town officials gathered at the West Hills birthplace of Walt Whitman yesterday to kick off the town's 350th anniversary - a yearlong celebration highlighted by several historical events and a planned trip to England to retrace the town's roots. "Huntington's journey through history actually began in April 2, 1653," Town Supervisor Frank Petrone said, referring to the date that English settlers purchased the land from the Matinecock Indians. "This makes us one of the oldest local governments and towns in the United States." The anniversary will be marked with dozens of historical lectures, walking tours, exhibitions and workshops throughout the town. The highlight of the celebration will be a trip by town officials to the Huntingdon, England - birthplace of Oliver Cromwell, Lord Protector of the Commonwealth of England during the 17th century. Are you referring to FindAGrave, on the Interment site? I tried it...and nothing. I am just beginning the "grave/death" search so I am rather ignorant in this area. I have pretty much "flushed" out all the players in my Hubbard line. Now, I have to substantiate a lot of my research with...documents, death dates, burial locations, etc. I do know that "my" Hubbard line ended up in Bayshore and many of them are buried in Oakwood Cemetery (I am awaiting a grave search). It is the "first" ancestor on Long Island, Benjamin Hubbard, who is proving to be one elusive "bugga". This guy moved around like a chess piece. He was born in Charlestown, MA, may have returned to England then back to the Americas possibly MA then Newport, RI. Eventually, he turns up living in Flushing in the 1650s...then he moved to Jamaica. Several clues lead me to believe that he may have died relatively young. Also, he may have been an anabaptist because I can not find a defi! nite birth record/baptism for son, Jeremiah. I have Jeremiah well documented (land transactions etc.). Jeremiah moved to Huntington in 1688 and the family eventually settled in Bayshore. Yes, you can answer a question for me. It appears that people were buried in church yards in the 1600s early 1700s. Is that the case and are these "burial sites" still in existence? In the course of my research, I have become familiar with the "other" three Hubbard lines on Long Island. My line is Benjamin Hubbard of Flushing/Jamaica, The other lines are Sgt. James Hubbard of Gravesend, Isaac Hubbard of Southold and possibly John Hubbard of Riverhead. On a Long Island Hiking site, I read about the White Pine Forest in East Hampton. Part of their sales pitch was, "visit the grave of young Benjamin Hubbard". Is this an old burial site? Since they singled out the grave of Benjamin Hubbard, could it be possible that "one lone" grave is in White Pine Forest? I contacted them and they said the! y would try to help, but have not received a response. I am going to write the Suffolk Parks Dept, but I thought you might know. Thanks for your help, Brenda, and please stay in your kitchen and sip hot chocolate....the spring isn't that far off :). Geri

It is the 10 hour ride to get there that's a killer. Tramping through cemeterys is the fun part. Some people can't understand why I like to go into cemeteries and find my kin. They tell me that at some point I will be spending a lot of time in one. Oh well.... What can I say?

I can't invision that you wouldn't be related to the various Hubbards you have found, there weren't all that many familes in the area then. Have you checked FindAGrave for local cemetaries? You may be surprised at how many Hubbards and Whites there are. Let me know if I can answer any of your questions on the area, I would be glad to help. I'll get back to you soon.

The NY weather has been especially harsh and with more snow on the way, I wouldn't dream of expecting and/or requesting that you attempt a "field trip." However, I really appreciate your willingness to help me. I would like to visit the area....hopefully spring/summer. In the meantime, I am gathering as much information as I can. I am not familiar with the area, but with the help of maps, etc., I hope to be able to find my way around. I have identified about four different Hubbard lines on Long Island in the 1600s. There is always the possibility that they are not "my" Hubbards. Nonetheless, hope springs eternal..... Thanks, again, b.... Geri

The original stones are broken but a new stone was put up with all the original information. The park is a part of the Suffolk County Park system from what I gather. It is in an odd location, by today's standards, and I am not sure if you can find it in Flanders, which is a part of Riverhead & Southampton Town, or Hampton Bays, which is Southampton Town. I don't mean to confuse you more. I will gladly drive down and copy the info for you, or take a picture if you'd like me to send it to you. A friend of mine is related to these Hubbards but I am not sure how much he really knows. The Hampton Bays Historical Society may be able to help you. Their mailing address is PO Box 588, Hampton Bays NY 11946. I will ask around for you to see what I can find out. Unfortunately there is a bunch of snow on the ground with more coming. I don't know if the park road is clear or not. It may take me a bit to get the information for y! ou. Good luck!
