It's said that my great-grandfather Henry Zenker owned a bakery on Main Street in Patchogue -- near or possibly across from Sweezey's. I'd like to learn more about this little tidbit. I'd like to determine if he was the owner and (if so) perhaps obtain a picture of the area. I'm not exactly sure what time period to focus on -- probablyas early as the 1920's into the 1930's... though I think with the Depression the family moved back to the City. Perhaps there is a City Directory for Patchogue? Other ideas? THANKS IN ADVANCE! Debbie

The Patchogue Chamber of Commerce may be of some help: Patchogue Chamber of Commerce 15 North Ocean Ave. Patchogue, NY 11772 Tel: 631/475-0121 Fax: 631/475-1599 eMail: [email protected] http://www.pagelinx.com/patchoguecoc/ Another source may be the people at the Patchogue-Medford Library: Patchogue-Medford Library 54-60 East Main Street Patchogue, NY 11772 Tel: 631/654-4700 Fax: 631/289-3999 Reference eMail: [email protected] http://pml.suffolk.lib.ny.us/index.htm A third place to check could be the Patchogue Village Clerk: Village Clerk Village of Patchogue 14 Baker Street P.O. Box 719 Patchogue, NY 11772 Tel: 631/475-4300 Fax: 631/475-4314 eMail: [email protected] http://www.patchoguevillage.org/index.html The pertinent geography: The Village of Patchogue (incorporated in 1893) is in the southwestern part of the Town of Brookhaven, Suffolk County. There are 8 villages (incorporated municipalities) and 36 hamlets (unincorporated areas) all or partly in the Town of Brookhaven. There are no cities and 10 towns in Suffolk County. There are 2 Indian reservations in Suffolk County. (I'm including after my name a NYS Geographic Glossary with the NYS definitions of county, city, town, village, hamlet and postal zone.) Beginning on the north and moving in a clockwise direction, the Village of Patchogue in the Town of Brookhaven is bordered on the north by the Hamlet of North Patchogue; on the east by the Hamlet of East Patchogue; on the south by the Great South Bay; and, on the west by the Hamlet of Blue Point. And, as occurs in every one of Suffolk County's 157 communities (0 cities, 31 villages and 126 hamlets), the hamlet and the postal zone that use the same name, have different borders. Places with a Patchogue mailing address may not be in Patchogue. These places with a Patchogue mailing address that are not in the Village of Patchogue are in the Hamlet of Blue Point, the Hamlet of North Patchogue, the Hamlet of East Patchogue, the Hamlet of North Bellport and the Village of Bellport. For those who have their copy of the 2002 or earlier edition of the LI Population Survey or have already downloaded the report from the Long Island Power Authority web site (eMail me directly if you need instructions on how to access and download the report), you'll find the Village of Patchogue (incorporated in 1893) in the Town of Brookhaven, Suffolk County on pages 14 & 24 (map) and 25 (population estimate). I hope this information is useful or, at least, interesting. Walter Greenspan . Cities, Towns, Villages, Hamlets and Postal Zones in New York State New York State is divided into counties. County A county is a municipal corporation, a subdivision of the state, created to perform state functions; a "regional" government. All counties are divided into cities, towns and Indian reservations. City A city is a unique governmental entity with its own special charter. Cities are not sub-divided, except into neighborhoods, which are informal geographic areas. Town A town is a municipal corporation and encompasses all territory within the state except that within cities or Indian reservations. Towns can be sub-divided into villages and hamlets. Village A village is a general purpose municipal corporation formed voluntarily by the residents of an area in one or more towns to provide themselves with municipal services. The pattern of village organization is similar to those of a city. A village is divided into neighborhoods, which are informal geographic areas. Hamlet A hamlet is an unincorporated area in one or more towns that is governed at-large by the town(s) it is in. A hamlet is divided into neighborhoods, which are informal geographic areas. Postal Zone "City" and "Town" A postal zone "City" and "Town" is an administrative district established by the U.S. Postal Service to deliver the mail. Postal zone "City" and "Town" may not (but are encouraged to) conform to municipal or community borders. Thus, postal zone location does not always determine city, village or hamlet location. Please be aware: In many areas of New York State, the problem of non-conforming postal zones leads to a situation where the majority of places have a different community name in their mailing address than the community where that place is actually located.
Searching for information on the family of Peter Whiteheare (Whitaker, Wittier, etc.) and Rachel Fancy, who were married in Brookhaven before 27 Oct. 1684. Rachel Fancy was the dau. of William Fancy Sr., one of the first proprietors of Setauket, and his second wife Katherine. Does anyone know who Peter Whiteheare's parents were, or if he and Rachel had any children? Any information would be greatly appreciated! Thank you! Is it possible to obtain a photo copy of a will from 1727? Chas. HOLE witnessed the following: 'Abstracts of Unrecorded Wills, Vol XI, Prior to 1790', pages 39-40: 'In the name of God, Amen. February 8, 1727/8. I, HANNAH KNOWLING, of Shelter Island, ...... I make Charles HOLE, of Southold, and my daughter, Mary Merrow, executors.' (One witness was Henry Merrow) Left a grandson John Merrow; dau. Hannah Hopkins; grandsons William Hopkins and Cornelius Paine; son-in-law John Par and his dau. Mary; my son Elisha Par. If I can obtain a copy of Chas. signature, I can confirm he is the same Chas. who was in NJ in 1730's. I recently located the baptism certificate for my grandfather showing that he was baptized at Mary Immaculate Church, Bellport, NY (sponsors Charles Di Stefano & Lena Di Stefano; Rev. Edward F. Seebeck). I would like to learn if the chuch holds more records about the family. Does the Church still exist? Otherwise, where might I be able to locate their records? Thanks!

I can add a generation to your search. Your Grandfather is William Alfred Rose, who I believe was born in 1889 and died in 1940. His father was also named William Alfred Rose and was born in 1869 in New york. His mother was Elizabeth Ward and she was born in 1887, also in New York. On your grandmothers side of the family, Winifred Cummings, she was born in 1887. Her father was Edward Cummings and he was born in 1865 in England. Her mother was Mary Reilly (I'm not sure of the spelling) in 1868 and was from Ireland. I hope that helps a little. I ran into your father a few years ago in Las Vagas and again later in Georgia. Drop me a line and we can chat, I live in Littleton Colorado now.

Minard. on page 336, in the chapter on Wellsville, John HARVEY is mentioned in a story "Hunt for a Lost Man." It states specifically, "At John HARVEY's the nearest house (where Emory COOK now lives), a blanket was procured and rigged to poles." Other than that, the story does not relate to John Harvey. The date given in the story was 1833, so I assume that John Harvey lived there sometime before 1833, but was gone when the events happened.

> Can someone tell if Huntington Rural Cemetery is the same as Old Huntington Cemetery? Or is it called something else now? Exactly where is it located. Thanks, Vicki > I assume you're referring to the "Old Burying Ground" on Main St at the east end of the downtown business section, which dates back to the 1600's. It's being cleaned up and some restoration work is underway to fix stones damaged by vandalism. Huntington Rural Cemetery, between New York Ave. and Oakwood Road dates from 1853 and is in current use. Let me know if you need additional information. Bill Chamberlain
