    3. I am considering subscribing to ancestry.com to use their census images. However, when I do a "free" search, my ancestor is found only in their 1930 index. I have found already him in 1870, 1900, 1910 & 1920 and was searching to check their thouroughness. So I wonder about the completeness of their indexes. Does anyone have any experience with this? I enjoy using my local FHL but it is a very slow process!! Thanks, Kathy

The FHC I use now has ancestry.com on-line for all patrons free of charge. I have been told that the FHL in Salt Lake City has negotiated a contract with ancestry making this service available at all FHCs in the U.S. Check it out. As for the inability fo find certain names, I understand that not all pages have been linked to the index yet. Al alternative is to use the state, county, ED approach. 3. Kathy, I have a subscription for Ancestry Census and the index is very poor. Go to your library and get your information from a census book before you look. If you have a high speed internet you can go from page to page very quick. Telephones lines are very slow. I have been doing as much research on these people for a On ancestry.com, I had no problem locating the Town of Shelter Island. For example: 1930: Search for New York State, then Suffolk County. The "Township" list you get are not really townships, but a list of Towns and Villages. Shelter Island is included. 1900: New York State, Suffolk County, then scroll down the list of Districts. You will find Shelter Island with Riverhead in District 776. 1880: New York State, Suffolk County, District 325. Hope this helps. Bill Chamberlain

I am not sure when they came over because there are no census records to be found on this website for Shelter Island between 1850 and 1930. I have been doing as much research on these people for a while and I can't believe I made such a big goof when I posted this message yesterday. The 2 people that my aunt knows of and requested SS apps for are her grandparents, Stanley Lenox, and Florence McDermott. It is Florence that was in fact born in Shelter Island and am trying to trace my aunt's ancestors from Shelter Island through her. I am at work right now and can't remember all facts on the paperwork I've accumulated so far but will be sure to post another reply when I get home and can attach the 1930 census that I found her name in. Problem is, she was listed as a neice of a McDermott family (it's been a few weeks since I've worked on all this), but because there are no census records on Shelter Island in 1920, 1910, 1900, 1890, etc. ! I have been unsuccessful in finding her parents. I can remember that her mother was listed as having been born in the Irish Free State. Not usually this long winded, but please bear with me... As far as the Lenek's/Lenox's go, Florence McDermott married Stanley Lenox and they lived in Shelter Island. He was born in Brooklyn to what was listed on his SS app Stephen Lenox and Anna Romot, both polish. I found him in the 1930 census in Shelter Island but can't remember what he did, had his partents listed as being polish. Further back (I can't remember where because the paperwork is not in front of me) I found a family that included a Stanley Lenek, with wife Anna, and son Stanley, age 1 which corresponded to the dates I had on his SS app. I have gone on way too long now. Really very sorry. Hope you still want to help. Will send more detailed (and shorter) message later when I have all the facts. Thanks

As far as we know, their names started as Lenek and got changed to Lenox somewhere along the line. After doing a little research, I think they were polish immigrants but have no idea when they came over because when I looked up all Shelter Island census data on ancestry.com, the availability of the censuses goes from 1850 to 1930. If you have any information, we'd really appreciate it. Thanks!
