Hello! I am researching the Vignato family of NYC and Suffolk County. However, different records (census, naturalization, bapitsmal, birth & death) show a variety of spellings including: Vignato, Vinto and others. Some people have suggested that the church records might be most accurate because there might tend to be others in the church who spoke both Italian and English who would be able to correctly record the name. Is this an accurate assumption? Can you suggest other ways to go about trying to verify the name? My hope is that I'll be able to trace the family back to Italy... but the name issue is a certain roadblock! Thanks for any ideas you might be able to offer. Debbie

Allow me to introduce myself: I am Eileen Jayne Di Ruocco, born and bred on Long Island but no longer living there. I am still interested in Long Island happenings and my ancestors who reside in various cemeteries on the island. I know that William Jayne is buried in the graveyard of the Presbyterian Church in Setauket but would like to know where his son, Stephen and wife Mary Hawkins are buried. Also Stephen's son, James and wife Catherine Van Cott. And James' son David who married Nancy Pease. I have been searching for them for years without too much success. Perhaps I have been looking in the wrong places. If anyone can send me in the right direction I would appreciate it very much.

I have a subscription to Ancestry.com and their indexes are not the best. If you do a soundex-type search you may find more references to your ancestor, but ther is no guarantee. I do find them useful, but the indexes can be error prone. Genealogy.com has some census information although their subscriptions are more expensive than Ancestry and their search engine is extremely cumbersome. Their library feature is useful. Guess this hasn't been too helpful, long-distance family history research is time-consuming & difficult but travel to the actual records is not feasible sometime. Sharon A. Pullen, C.A. However, when I do a "free" search, my ancestor is found only in their 1930 index. I have found already him in 1870, 1900, 1910 & 1920 and was searching to check their thouroughness. So I wonder about the completeness of their indexes. Does anyone have any experience with this? I enjoy using my local FHL but it is a very slow process!! Thanks, Kathy ______________________________
Rooters & Rootsers, Today's (Sunday's) NEWSDAY has an article, "Mourning a Manor: House's disrepair could mean end for Shelter Island landmark" about the possible demolition of the 16-acre estate known to locals as Ward's Point, and its 24-room manor house. According to NEWSDAY, "When former (New York) governor Hugh Carey bought 70 lots of subdivided land on Shelter Island in 1996, some locals breathed a sigh of relief. Carey and his family - themselves longtime summer residents - announced they planned to restore the property's centerpiece, a 16-acre estate known to locals as Ward's Point. The estate had long fallen into disrepair. Vandals, time and the elements had transformed the 24-room manor house into a rotted husk. Weeds obscured the garden's ornate stone walls, the handiwork of turn-of-the century masons hired from Italy for just that task. Bamboo and other plants threatened to choke out the estate's prized copper beeches." The pertinent geography: Shelter Island is a hamlet (an unincorporated community) in the central and southeastern part of the Town of Shelter Island, Suffolk County.
