    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/jUB.2ACI/727.1 Message Board Post: On 6/21/03 (6:32:24 PM MDT), in a posting to the Suffolk County Board that was 'gatewayed' to [email protected], Margaret Cenci Frontera ([email protected]) asked, "My grand aunt, Felicia Yaccarino Simonetti, died in Lindenhurst, LI, in 1962. In which newspaper might I find an Obit?" For questions such as yours, you may want to contact the Lindenhurst Memorial Library: Lindenhurst Memorial Library 1 Lee Avenue Lindenhurst, NY 11757-5399 Tel: 631/957-7755 Fax: 631/957-7114 eMail: [email protected] http://lml.suffolk.lib.ny.us/ The pertinent geography: Lindenhurst is a village (incorporated in 1923) in the southern part of the Town of Babylon, Suffolk County. There are 3 villages and 12 hamlets (unincorporated areas) all or partly in the Town of Babylon. There are no cities and 10 towns in Suffolk County. There are 2 Indian reservations in Suffolk County. (I'm including after my name a NYS Geographic Glossary with the NYS definitions of county, city, town, village, hamlet and postal zone.) Beginning on the north and moving in a clockwise direction, the Village of Lindenhurst in the Town of Babylon is bordered on the north by the Hamlet of North Lindenhurst; on the east by the Hamlet of West Babylon; on the south by the Great South Bay; and, on the west by the Hamlet of Copiague and the Hamlet of North Amityville. And, as occurs in every one of Suffolk County's 157 communities (0 cities, 31 villages and 126 hamlets), the Village of Lindenhurst has a different border than does the "Lindenhurst, NY 11757" postal zone (i.e., a place can have a Lindenhurst mailing address and not be in Lindenhurst and a place can have other than a Lindenhurst mailing address and be in Lindenhurst). Those places that have a "Lindenhurst, NY" mailing address that are not in the Village of Lindenhurst are in the Hamlet of North Lindenhurst; and, at the same time, there are places in the Village of Lindenhurst with a "West Babylon, NY 11704" mailing address. For those who have their copy of the 2002 or later edition of the LI Population Survey or have already downloaded the report from the Long Island Power Authority web site (eMail me directly if you need instructions on how to access and download the report), you'll find the Village of Lindenhurst (incorporated in 1923) in the Town of Babylon, Suffolk County on pages 14 & 18 (map) and 19 (population estimate). I hope this information is useful or, at least, interesting. Regards, Walter Greenspan Cities, Towns, Villages, Hamlets and Postal Zones in New York State New York State is divided into counties. County A county is a municipal corporation, a subdivision of the state, created to perform state functions; a "regional" government. All counties are divided into cities, towns and Indian reservations. City A city is a unique governmental entity with its own special charter. Cities are not sub-divided, except into neighborhoods, which are informal geographic areas. Town A town is a municipal corporation and encompasses all territory within the state except that within cities or Indian reservations. Towns can be sub-divided into villages and hamlets. Village A village is a general purpose municipal corporation formed voluntarily by the residents of an area in one or more towns to provide themselves with municipal services. The pattern of village organization is similar to those of a city. A village is divided into neighborhoods, which are informal geographic areas. Hamlet A hamlet is an unincorporated area in one or more towns that is governed at-large by the town(s) it is in. A hamlet is divided into neighborhoods, which are informal geographic areas. Postal Zone "City" and "Town" A postal zone "City" and "Town" is an administrative district established by the U.S. Postal Service to deliver the mail. Postal zone "City" and "Town" may not (but are encouraged to) conform to municipal or community borders. Thus, postal zone location does not always determine city, village or hamlet location. Please be aware: In many areas of New York State, the problem of non-conforming postal zones leads to a situation where the majority of places have a different community name in their mailing address than the community where that place is actually located.

    1. [NYSUF] 1906 LI Earthquake
    2. BROOKLYN DAILY STANDARD UNION - MAY 14, 1906 LONG ISLANDERS SURE THEY FELT TWO EARTHQUAKE SHOCKS The sleep of the residents of that section of Long Island lying between Farmingdale and Riverhead was broken this morning by what they claim was an earthquake. The shock was felt in Farmingdale, Pine Law, Wyandanch, Deer Park, Brentwood, Central Islip, Ronkonkoma, Yaphank, Medford, Manyor and all the small villages to Riverhead, about #:45 o'clock this morning. The shocks were of about one minute's duration and about two minutes apart, there being two shock. The first disturbance was more violent than the second and just strong enough to rock the houses. It made the bric-a-brac on mantelpieces do a war dance in most of the houses. The shock was first noticed by Alexander G. SULLIVAN, of Farmingdale, at a quarter to four. He though at first the wind was making the house shake and after the second shock he though burglars had broken into the house, so he grabbed a gun and started to investigate. He found some of his neighbors were also hunting for the cause of the disturbance and not finding any they came to the conclusion there had been an earthquake. A lawyer name TABOR, living in Brentwood and the conduction of the Riverhead Express also say they had a similar experience of a shock, about this time. There are several large institutions in these towns and it is said that the inmates were very much alarmed. Possibly they thought of San Francisco. There was an explosion in a cartridge factory in Bridgeport, Conn., early this morning, the shock of which was felt for a distance of twenty miles, which would make it possible that the Long Island earthquake was caused by this. But the Long Islanders say the quake was felt half an hour before the explosion. SEVERE AT EASTPORT The disturbance seemed to be especially severe at Eastport, where only ten seconds elapsed between the two shocks. Many of the inhabitants of Eastport were thrown from their beds, and the houses rocked from side to side. The shock was felt at Port Jefferson on the north shore of the Island. Furniture in the houses was moved out of place and a large plate glass window in the store of P. A. RAYNOR was broken. At Northport occupants of houses were so frightened that many ran into the streets. 1. [NYSUF] William L. Johnson
    2. Hello Folks: I am new to this list.I usually do all my research in Brooklyn but just found a relative that lived in Bay Port from about 1872 to at least 1896. William Lawrence Johnson was born about 1872 in Bay Port to Frank C. and Belle Johnson. I have William on the 1880 Bay Port Census with his parents and siblings. On 15 May 1896 William married Carrie Fowler Mapes ( my relative ) at the Strong Place Baptist Church in Brooklyn. In 1898 he graduated from the American Vet School in New York and passed the Vet exam in January 1899. I have the marriage certificate of these two kids but can not find hide nor hair of them since that time. What happened to them ? Her sister Katie Mapes got married on the same day and place and I have found her and family in the Bronx from 1900 to 1930. If anyone is related to this couple, William L. & Carrie Johnson I would love to hear from you. If anyone has any ideas to aid my search I am all ears ! William had two other siblings, Myrtle and Oscar.I found Oscar in the 1920 & 30 Census in Southold. And a son of Oscar's, Frank in the 1930 Census for Southold. Thanks, Blanche
