    1. [NYSUF] 1929 ROTHE Body in well
    2. 10 June 1929 Brooklyn Standard Union RESCUERS FIND FARMER’S BODY BURIED IN WELL Big Force of Rescuers Fail to Get Otto ROTHE Out Alive Patchogue, L. I., June 10 Working in short shifts and at top speed, 100 volunteers at noon today reached the body of Otto ROTHE, farmer, who was buried in a well which he was digging on his farm near Medford when part of the wall gave way last night. ROTHE was dead when the rescuers finally uncovered his head and shoulders. He was standing up, just where the inrushing earth and sand caught him. Volunteer workers from Medford, Coram, Yaphank and the Patchogue Fire Department, digging all night without shoring, were hampered by repeated slides of sand. The actual removal of the body from the hole was delayed by repeated slides today, and it was expected to be brought out during the afternoon. 1. [NYSUF] Need DRUHL Obituary
    2. On 7/23/03 (1:53:42 PM MDT), Mike in TX ([email protected]) asked, "Does anyone have access to an obituary for Philip DRUHL, b. Aug. 6, 1945, d. Aug. 1974, last residence Lindenhurst, Suffolk Co., NY 11757." For questions such as yours, you may want to contact the Lindenhurst Memorial Library: Lindenhurst Memorial Library 1 Lee Avenue Lindenhurst, NY 11757-5399 Tel: 631/957-7755 Fax: 631/957-7114 eMail: [email protected] http://lml.suffolk.lib.ny.us/ The pertinent geography: Lindenhurst is a village (incorporated in 1923) in the southern part of the Town of Babylon, Suffolk County. There are 3 villages and 12 hamlets (unincorporated areas) all or partly in the Town of Babylon. There are no cities and 10 towns in Suffolk County. There are 2 Indian reservations in Suffolk County. (I'm including after my name a NYS Geographic Glossary with the NYS definitions of county, city, town, village, hamlet and postal zone.) Beginning on the north and moving in a clockwise direction, the Village of Lindenhurst in the Town of Babylon is bordered on the north by the Hamlet of North Lindenhurst; on the east by the Hamlet of West Babylon; on the south by the Great South Bay; and, on the west by the Hamlet of Copiague and the Hamlet of North Amityville. And, as occurs in every one of Suffolk County's 157 communities (0 cities, 31 villages and 126 hamlets), the Village of Lindenhurst has a different border than does the "Lindenhurst, NY 11757" postal zone (i.e., a place can have a Lindenhurst mailing address and not be in Lindenhurst and a place can have other than a Lindenhurst mailing address and be in Lindenhurst). Those places that have a "Lindenhurst, NY" mailing address that are not in the Village of Lindenhurst are in the Hamlet of North Lindenhurst; and, at the same time, there are places in the Village of Lindenhurst with a "West Babylon, NY 11704" mailing address. For those who have their copy of the 2002 or earlier edition of the LI Population Survey or have already downloaded the report from the Long Island Power Authority web site (eMail me directly if you need instructions on how to access and download the report), you'll find the Village of Lindenhurst (incorporated in 1923) in the Town of Babylon, Suffolk County on pages 14 & 18 (map) and 19 (population estimate). I hope this information is useful or, at least, interesting. Regards, Walter Greenspan . Cities, Towns, Villages, Hamlets and Postal Zones in New York State New York State is divided into counties. County A county is a municipal corporation, a subdivision of the state, created to perform state functions; a "regional" government. All counties are divided into cities, towns and Indian reservations. City A city is a unique governmental entity with its own special charter. Cities are not sub-divided, except into neighborhoods, which are informal geographic areas. Town A town is a municipal corporation and encompasses all territory within the state except that within cities or Indian reservations. Towns can be sub-divided into villages and hamlets. Village A village is a general purpose municipal corporation formed voluntarily by the residents of an area in one or more towns to provide themselves with municipal services. The pattern of village organization is similar to those of a city. A village is divided into neighborhoods, which are informal geographic areas. Hamlet A hamlet is an unincorporated area in one or more towns that is governed at-large by the town(s) it is in. A hamlet is divided into neighborhoods, which are informal geographic areas. Postal Zone "City" and "Town" A postal zone "City" and "Town" is an administrative district established by the U.S. Postal Service to deliver the mail. Postal zone "City" and "Town" may not (but are encouraged to) conform to municipal or community borders. Thus, postal zone location does not always determine city, village or hamlet location. Please be aware: In many areas of New York State, the problem of non-conforming postal zones leads to a situation where the majority of places have a different community name in their mailing address than the community where that place is actually located.

    1. [NYSUF] Suicide Club Amityville 1931
    2. 16 May 1931 Brooklyn Standard Union SPINSTER'S ARREST AS KILLER REVEALS L.I. SUICIDE CLUB Only 26 Out of 50 Members Still Alive Residents of Amityville were startled to-day to learn of a weird "suicide cult" which already may have claimed the lives of 24 of its original 50 members. The existence of such a "club" came to light, authorities said, with the arrests of a 57 year-old spinster, Louise SCHWARZ, who is under indictment on a second degree murder charge in connection with the death of her invalid brother, Edward, 55. Miss SCHWARZ was taken into custody when police said they had learned she was the only one who would have had the opportunity or the motive for firing the shot which took her brother's life. The tall angular woman is of an old and respected family here and had devoted nearly all of her life to the care of her brother. TELLS OF SUICIDE CLUB She denied the killing and told police her brother took his own life as a member of the suicide club. SCHWARZ was found last Wednesday, freshly shaven and dressed in his best clothes, seated in an easy chair, dead. His ankles were crossed and a revolver lay in his lap, loosely clutched in his right hand. He had two wounds in his head. Police at first accepted the suicide theory until the coroner pointed out that one of the shots destroyed his motor centers and it would have been impossible for him to have fired the second shot which caused his death. The coroner also said that as SCHWARZ was a helpless invalid, it would have been impossible for him to dress himself. Miss SCHWARZ was then arrested. She told authorities that if she shot him she did so while "my soul had flown from my body." Her brother, she said, had suffered almost unbearably for the past 20 years and they had agreed that it was best for him to end it all. ONLY 26 REMAIN This agreement came, she said, after a meeting of the "Suicide Club" at her home, when members offered prayers for relief of his suffering to no avail. The "cult" originally composed of fifty aged and suffering members, but with only twenty-six remaining, had an unwritten law, she said, whereby it was understood that if the weekly prayers for some member failed the victim would end his life. It was under this understanding that the brother and sister decided it was best for him to end his life, she said. She helped him put on his best clothes, shaved him and placed him in the easy chair "so that he would look his best in death." She then got the revolver and handed it to him, she said, leaving the house shortly thereafter, not to return until five hours later. When she got back her brother was dead. She called for a neighbor who summoned police. FACTS FOUND TO TALLY Authorities were at first inclined to place little credence in her story until she told of how another member of the club, George BREITENBACH had gone home and hanged himself in the cellar of his home after the "club's" prayers had failed. Authorities looked up the case and found the details of the death of BREITENBACH coincided in every detail with her description. Miss SCHWARZ went on to name a dozen late residents of Suffolk County who, as members of the club, had ended their lives, according to officials. Police were attempting to learn the names of other members to ascertain whether the missing 24 of the original 50 had met death at their own hands. transcribed for the Brooklyn Info Pages by Barbara Stein http://www.bklyn-genealogy-info.com/

Is there any place where one could search for birth, marriage, and death records in L.I? I really enjoy doing my own research because I find so much more than I could imagine. It also saves me money because I don't have exact dates (or towns in some cases) and sometimes I have to look over many years. I'll be in L.I. next week, can someone please let me know if there is a place I can do my own research? I am looking for birth records from the 1800s. It is on the microfilm at the Suffolk County Historical Society in Riverhead, and I think also at the New York State Library in Albany and the New York Genealogical & Biographical Society in Manhattan. I don't know why the LDS library catalog doesn't show it- whether it is just poor cataloging, or if they are actually missing part of the census. There is one drawback in using it though. It is unindexed, so researchers have to scroll through page-by-page to find who they are looking for. Sag Harbor is located on the Southampton/East Hampton townline, so part is in one town, and part in the other.
