    3. Hi folks, for the last few days, my inbox has filled with bounce messages from various ISP's, the reason, and the reason many of you are not receiving mail from the list, or have "bounced" off the list may be as follows..: Osirisoft.com was part of the SPEWS blacklist service, which got some bad e-press lately because of the way they conducted their service. If one person at an ISP was associated with spamming, they would blacklist the entire ISP and the only way for the users of the ISP (Internet Service Provider) to get un-blacklisted would be for them to switch ISPs or convince their ISP to do whatever SPEWS told them to do. There was no appeals process. Some people got mad at Osirisoft and they have recently been the subject of a DDOS attack. It has been said that the owner of Osirisoft has PERMANENTLY shut down the service and blacklisted the entire Internet. I do not know if this is true. The way the service works, every piece of email sent through the service is checked to see if its origin is on the blacklist. If the entire Internet is blacklisted, then every piece of email sent through the service is rejected as spam. Any ISP filtering email through relays.osirisoft.com must reconfigure to filter through another server or turn off filtering to fix this situation. However, it's hard to contact them to tell them this, since any email sent will be filtered as spam! Hopefully they pay attention and fix it on their own. For reference, check out this link: http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/08/27/0214238&mode=thread&tid=111& tid=126 Regards, Fred, ListUncle www.rootsweb.com/~nyessex

    1. [NYSUF] Southold records
    2. On 8/23/03 (8:09:35 AM MDT), Barbara ([email protected]) asked, "Where would be the best place to look for Southold records, i.e. birth, marriage, death, wills, deeds, administration papers and militia records?" For birth, marriage and death, you'll want to ask the Town Clerk for the Town of Southold: Town Clerk Southold Town Hall P.O. Box 1179 53095 Main Road Southold, NY 11971 Tel: 631/765-1981 Fax: 631/765-1823 eMail: ????? http://www.northfork.net/southold/ For wills, deed and other such documents, you'll want to ask the County Clerk for Suffolk County: County Clerk's Office Suffolk County 310 Center Drive Riverhead, NY 11901-3392 Tel: 631/852-2001 Fax: 631/???-???? eMail: [email protected] http://www.co.suffolk.ny.us/webtemp2.cfm?dept=33&id=2041 The pertinent geography: Southold is a hamlet (an unincorporated area) in the center of the Town of Southold, Suffolk County. There are 1 village and 10 hamlets in the Town of Southold. There are no cities and 10 towns in Suffolk County. There are 2 Indian reservations in Suffolk County. (I'm including after my name a NYS Geographic Glossary with the NYS definitions of county, city, town, village, hamlet and postal zone.) Beginning on the north and moving in a clockwise direction, the Hamlet of Southold in the Town of Southold is bordered on the north by Long Island Sound; on the east by the Hamlet of Greenport West; on the south by the Little Peconic Bay; and, on the west by the Hamlet of Peconic. And, as occurs in every one of Suffolk County's 157 communities (0 cities, 31 villages and 126 hamlets), the Hamlet of Southold has a different border than does the "Southold, NY 11971" postal zone (i.e., a place can have a Southold mailing address and not be in Southold and a place can have other than a Southold mailing address and be in Southold). Those places that have a "Southold, NY" mailing address that are not in the Hamlet of Southold are in the Hamlet of West Greenport; and, at the same time, there are places in the Hamlet of Southold with a "Peconic, NY 11936" mailing address. For those who have their copy of the 2002 or earlier edition of the LI Population Survey or have already downloaded the report from the Long Island Power Authority web site (eMail me directly if you need instructions on how to access and download the report), you'll find the Hamlet of Southold in the Town of Southold, Suffolk County on pages 15 & 30 (map) and 31 (population estimate). I believe the telephone # for Property is 631-548-3417. Filed maps are indexed by town and then alphabetically by the name of the filed map. The name can be a subdivision name and the name of a property owner. Mortgage and deed indexes are in bound volumes, and through 1950 are alphjabetically for the entire county. For 1951-1976, the bound indexes are alphabetical by town. After 1976, the indexes are again alphabetical on a county-wide basis. Manorville is in the Town of Brookhaven.

During the colonial period, you seldom find records, listings and other information lower than the town level. I would think that an early listing identified as the Town of Southampton would be exactly that - covering the entire town and not just part of it.

I don't know if it's ancestry's fault or mine. You might want to check _Calendar of Historical Manuscripts Relating to the War of the Revolution in the Office of the Secretary of State_ (Albany, 1868), 2 vols. (FHC microfilm #1550750). Vol. I has a number of lists of Suffolk County signators of the association, including, on p. 59, the one you mention. In front of that, on p. 58, is a longer list of names of men who signed at "County Hall" in May 1775, attested by Daniel Howell at Southampton on July 19. Comparing the names of men indexed (at the end of Vol. II) in the June, 1776, census of the eastern district of Southampton (east of a "place called the Water mill") pp. 412-417, one finds a number of similar names between the signators in this list and those enumerated in the census. On p. 120 of the same vol. is a list of officers of the 2nd Battalion, Suffolk County, dated Aug. 21, 1775. It appears that the officers of the 3rd Company were men from the eastern district. They were David Peirson, captain; Daniel Heges, 1st lt.; David Sayre, 2nd lt.; and Theophilus Peirson, ensign. All four names are in the census and in the list of County Hall signators, as is that of Jonathan Hedges, 2nd colonel [Lt. Col.?] of the battalion. Please note the variety of spellings of the names in the index. Are you referring to James Truslow Adams, _History of Southampton_? Russell K. Brown
