    1. [NYSUF] Gothe Query
    2. On 9/9/03 (8:58:25 PM MDT), the list administrator ([email protected]) relayed a posting from SUZANNE W ([email protected]) that asked, "I AM TRYING TO FIND A OBIT OF ANNE L. GOTHE DIED IN SUFFOLK CO, ON 10-27-1981. THANKS FOR YOU HELP IN THIS MATTER." Suffolk County has 10 towns that include 31 villages and 126 hamlets. Do you know in which community the death occurred or, at least, in which community the deceased was living at the time of death? Such information is necessary in order to recommend which local newspaper or library might be able to assist you in your search. L'Shannah Tovah & Happy 5764, Walter Greenspan

    3. BlankI'm researching: James R. KETCHAM, Sr. (18 Oct 1888 to ?) Richard P. HARTT (Abt 1819 to ?) Wilfred E. BURR ( 26 Jan 1868 to ?) All have lived at various times in Brooklyn, Queens, Nassau, and Suffolk. I'd be very interested in sharing information with anyone else researching these lines. I'm a beginner and have been working on this for less than a year. Thank You, Chris (Ketcham) Abbey

However, the side roads that run along the parkway are Great River Rd (not really next to the parkway), which turns into River Rd, which crosses over the parkway to the very south (also provides an exit off the parkway), and Overlook Drive, which runs from Montauk Hwy to Marilyn Street (which is a bicycle path to the park). Any elementary children in that area would attend Timberpoint Elementary School. The name of the road that ran north of Montauk (opposite Overlook Dr.) is Harwood Avenue. Claudia Carson

    1. [NYSUF] street name
    2. On 9/7/03 (5:39:24 PM MDT), Bern ([email protected]) asked, "Can anyone tell me the name of the street that crossed over the Montaulk Highway and went all the way down to Heckscher (spelling?) State Park in East Islip. I am trying to figure out what ED's I need to search to find an address in the 1930 census." For questions such as yours, you may want to contact the East Islip Public Library: East Islip Public Library 381 East Main Street East Islip, NY 11730 Tel: 631/581-9200 Fax: 631/581-2245 eMail: [email protected] http://eipl.suffolk.lib.ny.us/ The pertinent geography: East Islip is a hamlet (unincorporated area) in the south-central section of the Town of Islip, Suffolk County. There are 4 villages (incorporated municipalities) and 23 hamlets all or partly in the Town of Islip. There are no cities and 10 towns in Suffolk County. There are 2 Indian reservations in Suffolk County. (I'm including after my name a NYS Geographic Glossary with the NYS definitions of county, city, town, village, hamlet and postal zone.) Beginning on the north and moving in a clockwise direction, the Hamlet of Islip in the Town of Islip is bordered on the north by the Hamlet of Islip Terrrace; on the east by the Hamlet of Great River; on the south by the Great South Bay; and, on the west by the Hamlet of Islip. And, as occurs in every one of Suffolk County's 157 communities (0 cities, 31 villages and 126 hamlets), the Hamlet of East Islip has a different border than does the "East Islip, NY 11730" postal zone (i.e., a place can have an East Islip mailing address and not be in East Islip). Those places that have an "East Islip, NY" mailing address that are not in the Hamlet of East Islip are in the Hamlet of Great River. For those who have their copy of the 2002 or earlier editions of the LI Population Survey or have already downloaded the report from the Long Island Power Authority web site (eMail me directly if you need instructions on how to access and download the report), you'll find the Hamlet of East Islip in the Town of Islip, Suffolk County on pages 14 & 20 (map) and 21 (population estimate). I hope this information is useful or, at least, interesting. L'Shannah Tovah & Happy 5764, Walter Greenspan . Cities, Towns, Villages, Hamlets and Postal Zones in New York State New York State is divided into counties. County A county is a municipal corporation, a subdivision of the state, created to perform state functions; a "regional" government. All counties are divided into cities, towns and Indian reservations. City A city is a unique governmental entity with its own special charter. Cities are not sub-divided, except into neighborhoods, which are informal geographic areas. Town A town is a municipal corporation and encompasses all territory within the state except that within cities or Indian reservations. Towns can be sub-divided into villages and hamlets. Village A village is a general purpose municipal corporation formed voluntarily by the residents of an area in one or more towns to provide themselves with municipal services. The pattern of village organization is similar to those of a city. A village is divided into neighborhoods, which are informal geographic areas. Hamlet A hamlet is an unincorporated area in one or more towns that is governed at-large by the town(s) it is in. A hamlet is divided into neighborhoods, which are informal geographic areas. Postal Zone "City" and "Town" A postal zone "City" and "Town" is an administrative district established by the U.S. Postal Service to deliver the mail. Postal zone "City" and "Town" may not (but are encouraged to) conform to municipal or community borders. Thus, postal zone location does not always determine city, village or hamlet location. Please be aware: In many areas of New York State, the problem of non-conforming postal zones leads to a situation where the majority of places have a different community name in their mailing address than the community where that place is actually located.

    1. [NYSUF] The Evergreens Cemetery
    2. Interesting article in today's (Sunday, September 7, 2003) NEWSDAY about the The Evergreens Cemetery: Here are the final resting grounds of jazz great Bill "Bojangles" Robinson, Tony Pastor, father of vaudeville, and Joseph DeBragga, the former Republican Party boss from Queens. Here, too, amid the 225 pastoral acres of The Evergreens Cemetery on the Brooklyn-Queens border, lie several lesser-known curiosities. The groundskeepers-turned-historians love to tell about the burial site of unknown African-American Civil War soldiers, which they uncovered on the Queens side. Also, there's the "Grassy Path" cutting through the border, part of a pre-Revolutionary Indian trail they located. I can imagine him as one of the boys standing at the Railroad Station on the photo accompanying the Community Profile of Lindenhurst. Does anyone know the name of the elementary school he would have attended in that area? Also, I noticed his older brother worked at a button factory. Anyone know what its name might have been?
