Naturalization records are indexed at the county courthouse in Canton. Since you know the date of naturalization it would be a quick search. If you have not researched the 1860 and 1850 censuses you might find something on them. Also 1914 is recent enough that you might find an obit. Go to google and search 'ny state newspaper project'. This will give you info re borrowing newspapers on microfilm via interlibrary loan. Your local library will have to have a microfilm reader and will initiate the request. If a trip to Canton is not convenient for you and if paid research is an option, I could recommend a local researcher or you could contact the SLCHA (St. Lawrence county historical society). Cenus records are a bit of a stretch as they would not be indexed and you don't know when he came into the country (but the naturalization record might tell you this). James Sullivan from Ireland married a Henriette(Hattie) Denis/Denny. Her father was Joseph Denis and Marie Jourdain. I am unable to get a birth year or his parents names. I do know James was in the Poor House in Canton,N.Y. in 1910 and he died in 1914. His Death Certificate says he was about 95 at the time of his death. The census for 1870 says he was 48 years of age and in 1900 census says he was 68 years of age. I am totally confused. His poor house records say he was Naturalized in 1870 and had been in the usa for 52 years.I hope you can help me , so I won't be so confused.
