Van Hoyt, You are probably on the right track sticking close to the Mormon Smith line in your research, as not only was Joseph Smith, Jr. from Sharon, VT, his grandfather Asa(h)el SMITH and many other SMITH family members, lived and died in the area of Stockholm, St. Lawrence Co., NY. Asahel SMITH died in Stockholm NY in October, 1830. Three months earlier his son Joseph Smith, Sr. came to town to baptize his father, which according to the LDS Biography/Encyclopedia, caused quite a family stir, particularly with Jos. Sr's brother, my GGG Jesse SMITH. I have searched my FTM files and found a Mariah SMITH born 1677 Topsfield, MA, the daughter of Robert SMITH b 1626 Kirton, Lincolnshire, England and Mary FRENCH b 1634 Boston, Suffolk, MA. They are in the direct Mormon SMITH line, so perhaps your Mariah SMITH's name was passed down in the family. In my file, I also found a David Hyrum SMITH b 1863, Desseret, Millard, UT the son of Silas SMITH b 1822 Stockholm NY and Sarah ORTON. David is the GG grandson of Asahel SMITH, so perhaps the name David was again passed on in the family. In case you have not seen this, on the 1840 US Census for Stockholm, NY, several households above Harry MARSH are Lewis(?) MARSH and Isaac MARSH. No SMITH's are listed on that census page. And on the 1850 Stockholm NY census, Isaac MARSH is living next household to Harry and Maria MARSH. Wish I could help you more in finding Mariah SMITH's line. Best of luck, Diana Chapman Owen Van Hoyt wrote: Hi, Any chance you might have something on a Maria(h) Smith that married Harry Marsh in 1830? She was born in 1806 in Chazy, Clinton County, NY, the Smith family apparently left the Chazy area when things got hot during the War of 1812, moved to Vermont, and Maria(h) came with Harry to live in Stockholm, St.Lawrence Co, NY for the rest of her life. She died in 1895. She is buried in Holmes Hill Cemetery, Stockholm, NY. She is my grandmother, and I am STRUGGLING to find her ancestry. The death record says her parents are David Smith and Eunice_________, both born Vermont. I can ONLY find David Smith and Eunice from Maine (that didn't pan out) and Conn, md to a Eunice Peck. ( That might still lead to something.) Harry Marsh lived in Sharon, Vermont area with his brothers and father, Isaac Marsh. Isaac's father, James, was a Rev. War soldier. Since the Mormon prophet, Joseph Smith Jr came from the same area in Vermont, I have always wondered if there might be a connection to that family. Thanks for reading this. Fingers crossed. Van Hoyt
