This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: Potts, Wright Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/2RB.2ACE/8455.1 Message Board Post: David Potts and wife Hanna are listed in the 1910 census in Ogdensburg, NY. He is 74 and she is 71. He does not show up in the HeritageQuest index for the 1920 census. He is listed as 'grocer' born in Canada with father born in Ireland and mother in Scotland. She is listed as born in Ireland and both parents born in Ireland. I don't have a subscription to HeritageQuest but it is available thru my local library. Note that some libraries have HeritageQuest, some have Ancestry.com and some might have both available for people with valid library cards. Some censuses are indexed, some are not (but you can browse entire towns for names) and you can't always trust indexes in any case. You should check the many resources available at the county site at www.usgenweb.org. There are extensive online cemetery, census, church and newspaper records available for review. There are photos of headstones for David Potts, 1835-1914, Hannah Wright his wife 1839-1871, William H. 1866-1871 and James A. 1868-1912. This is one of several great resources put on line by Anne Cady (cemetery/Ogdensburg). Also the 1870 census for the county may show the family if they were in the county in that year. It would probably be worth your time to check every link at the usgenweb county site. For example, the Gouverneur Herald records, indexed by me, has entries from all over the county and surrounding counties. At www.familysearch.org, the 1880 census for the entire US is transcribed and online and the 1881 Canadian census in case they were in Canada that year. If you can make a trip to the county courthouse they have indexed wills, land records, probate, naturalization and more. The county historical association is within walking distance and nearby St. Lawrence university has old newspapers on microfilm and other records. You might be able to find an obit in old newspaper records. Hope this gets you started - Russ Sprague Kensington, Maryland
